Good morning all! I started hearing a strange noise coming from the engine the other day. It is not rapid or loud, but constant. I took it to a local mechanic and they said it's the AC compressor, ( quoted $1,200) but my AC is working great. My next option is to take it to my local dealership, just wanted to see what you guys think it could be first. I have no warning lights coming from my dash and my truck is running perfectly. It's a 2017 Limited with 123,800 miles on it. Thanks in advanced.

So, is it purring? A delightful kitty makes a content sound.

Delightful Peeg makes a burping noise.

Content? If your Tundra is happy, drive it. :D

If the noise is annoying you, then take it to the dealer, being fully aware they may charge you to confirm the original diagnosis. Is it worth $1200 to you to stop the noise?

I would start "watchful waiting"...if it's a serious problem like a bearing, the noise will get louder until something breaks. The trick is to catch it just before it breaks.

The UR engines are naturally noisy, you'll need a fat wallet to keep it quiet.

Definitely get a second opinion. If it truly is the compressor you should definitely be able to get it done for less than $1200. I had one done once and my mechanic couldn't get the part for a decent price, so he let me supply my own. Made the entire project about half that cost. I had also gotten quotes from other mechanics for around $800-900 supplies/install. Unfortunately for me it wasn't even the compressor, but a melted wiring harness...which is why I say get a second opinion, haha

It's hard to describe the sound, but it sounds like it's coming from the middle of the engine.

A Denso AC compressor for your truck hovers at the $275-$325.

What the hell is he doing for the other grand? I think these guys sometimes throw ridiculous numbers to shun people away they don't want to deal with or they have stimulus pricing.
(That's saying something from the California market). I was just in Orlando/kissimmee area and I know those boys can do better than that for you.

In all seriousness, John is spot on. I think mine is louder than these new gen diesels sometimes. Get a CAI/TRD and you'll never hear it again..

Oh and btw, congrats on breaking in your engine.

The key is to use Denso which is an OEM supplier to Toyota. Dont use aftermarket crap that WILL fail. So Denso AC compressor $300 plus condesor (in front of radiator) you can go aftermarket on that $115 (really a must to change since it captures all the wear particles, there is a filter on the side you can change but for $115 not worth taking the chance). 3 cans of freon at $5? can and parts are $430 whole sale pricing. I would guess a couple hours to change and pull vacuum.

first determine the noise, belt slip etc. Compressor get noisy very very very gradually over decades not weeks. if they get noisy over weeks they will lock up quickly. My old 2001 Lexus gs300 has a variable displacement ac compressor. the clutch never cycles it manually adjust piston stroke depending on cooling. An absolute marvel of engineering which works flawlessly!!! then I get my 2021 Tundra and hear the clutch cycle on and off. Replacement compressor for my Lexus from Denso $335 so why Toyota didnt use that design in all their cars is beyond me.
