2020 LandCruiser comes with transmission cooler, why not Tundra?

I really appreciate the awesome cooler packages that have been put together by some of the forum members here, but until I see an actual trans failure due to the removal of the auxiliary cooler, I will hold my ammo that somehow all of us 19+ owners have been duped. Call me crazy, but complaining, and even threatening to sue someone over a problem that doesn't even exist yet, seems completely ridiculous. Just my 2cents.

 

I wouldn’t expect it to have happened yet. But this Toyota engineer says they’ve already seen defects.

 

Toyota's answer.... the 8 speed in the land cruiser benefits from the aux cooler, the 6 speed in the tundra does not

Not an expert here but could the LC have the cooler b/c it has an 8 speed trans instead of the 6 the Tundra has?

Edit - it's also full time 4wd.

 

I could see that. The 8 speed transmission will shift more often and the TC will spend more time unlocked. Obviously though this is not a thread for common sense.

 

I have no idea what a transmission cooler is or what it’s needed for, but thanks to this forum I know I should be outraged.

 

It depends on the dealer as to how much trouble you would have exercising warranty coverage. Some dealers have installed the coolers and said it would not void the warranty, some have inspected cooler installs and said it would not void the warranty. From my reading of this forum and the associated threads, very few dealers have expressed concern about the aftermarket cooler.

Toyota: Your Honor, our Cooler Package is the Warmer Package when its warming and when it gets too warm it acts as a Cooler.

If I were building a case about the Aux Trans Cooler, I wouldn't bother arguing the "does it need it" part. Too much costs to bring in experts to opine about needing one, and you'll still fail to prove Toyota Engineers wrong in court (notice I said "in court").

I would just focus the case on "false advertising". You would have to compare the wording on the Maroney Stickers of prior year Tundras with the current ones that don't have "aux coolers". For good measure you throw in how it appears on the Land Cruiser. I don't know how all of these are worded on the Maroney Stickers, but if they were substantially similar, then you can make a good argument that the sticker was misleading. That way, you don't have to prove that the Tundra needs the aux cooler, just that you had reasonable expectations that it came with one based on the Maroney Sticker.

You won't have a problem showing that you had reasonable expectations of having an aux cooler. The problem becomes showing that you were harmed. You will have to show that you were damaged in some way. If you could point to empirical evidence of damaged transmissions, you can show damage.

There's probably some smart lawyers on this forum that can explain this better or can figure out the damage part.

 

My wife's Prius has a battery that gives it 45 MPG. My Tundra doesn't have that. If Toyota can put a hybrid battery in a $30,000 car, why not in my $50,000 truck? What's up Toyota?

So you are going to try to use a different 8 speed transmission, from a different vehicle, from a different class / intended use to prove Toyota is negligent and misleading buyers with what it’s engineers deem as an acceptable temperature range?

Good luck in your time and money wasting goals for 2021, and thank you for wanting to waste my tax dollars on this.

 

So you aren’t willing to take this to a Federal Level? You are going to bury Toyota in this avalanche of litigation and break the largest automaker in the world on a Local level?

As for my question about the 8 speed trans swap, read an article that stated it was done to smooth out the acceleration from a stop and help towing for those vehicles. The MPG didn't improve after the upgrade because that wasn't the purpose and therefore it wasnt built out to improve MPG.

 

Is there a difference in what ATF the 6 and 8 speed trannies take? From what I have seen the Tundra must be fed the very special Toyota ATF.
I dont know if the same holds true for the LC 8 speed? If not that may be the reason for no auxiliary cooler for the Tundra.

And to anybody who wishes to fight city hall. I say become as knowledgeable as you possibly can, plan your strategy and
go for it.

 

The Land Cruiser is also traditionally designed for a much longer service life (25+ years iirc) than any other Toyota vehicle. The LC is a "luxury SUV" in North America, but it's the work horse for the rest of the world. Wouldn't surprise me if they look at the Tundra and say it lives fine for 15 years without the cooler, where as the LC is meant for much harsher and longer lasting environments which could be why the cooler was left in it.

 

Obviously understand this is just playing around, but devils advocate approach is the Tundra isn't advertised as having a "Battery" and or "45 MPG". So not really applicable, but if it was advertised as such and had it in prior years with no update to advertising, then you might have something.

I understand the OP's frustration, I get it, I have a 2020. I installed Nicks kit and moved on. Dissapointed sure, and maybe it wasn't even necessary w the updated shift logic. Toyota obviously realized the oopsie on the documentation and updated in 2021.

My ISF is listed as having an alternator / voltage guage, the earlier gauge cluster had it, when they revised the gauge cluster it was removed, but still not the window sticker. It happens.

Sounds like I need to sue Toyota because their spec sheet clearly states my 2021 TRD Pro was supposed to come with the urethane steering wheel, but instead I got the leather wrapped one. Now I'm pissed...I was misled.

 

I saw some York Peppermint Patties in the Portland Airport this afternoon. I almost bought some...wish I had now that I hear there's a shortage.

 

You’re probably going to care when the court sanctions you for filing your frivolous lawsuit and makes you pay Toyota’s attorney’s fees and court costs.

I’m guessing the arbitration clause in your purchase contract has also slipped your mind.

This is a good observation.

LC has a aux cooler, Tundra doesn't.

Everyone is legitimately concerned about the lack of additional trans cooling on the Tundra. With some digging and research by alot of us here, the general verdict is that if you are going to tow at or above max capacity, everday, for hours, in 110F ambients, uphill, going 80 mph, you should add a cooler. Or if you are a full time overlander crawling up mountains for hours at a time with a huge patriot camper on the back, add a cooler.

It was in the middle of another lengthy thread...but there is a documented 2019 model with 300k miles with towing and no transmission issues.

There are some pretty big differences between the Tundra and LC.

#1 by far--rear gear ratio. the LC is a 3.3 ratio, Tundra is 4.30. This is a huge mechanical advantage for the Tundra's 6 spd. This reduces the load on the transmission and also reduces the length of time needed for TQ to be unlocked and generating tons of frictional heat.
#2. Shift mapping differences. The 2019 Tundra has different shift strategies that prioritize TQ lock up. With another 2 ratios to manage the LC likely needs the cooler for the lower ratios.
#3. The LC 8 spd also doesn't look to have the hockey puck water cooler that the Tundra does. So there is that...to manage the thermal loads it needed an aux cooler to keep temps in target.
