Unfortunately, for those living paycheck to paycheck, fuel prices may have a huge impact on their budget.

Having said that, that might be a good time to think about upgrading the 2010 to something newer.

I get what you saying, but buying a new vehicle to save at the pump never makes sense.

If living paycheck to paycheck, it makes even less sense. 15000 miles per year, double the price of gas, and your saving about $2000 per year. Trade in your 2010, finance a 2022 and the payments will easily run in excess of $700/month if financed over 60.

Buying a truck for fuel mileage is silly, that's what Prius' are for. But if I can get big power and fuel economy I'm going to jump on it. The current batch of NA V8's are fairly maxed out, you start to sacrifice reliability once you try to get more out of them. But forced induction is just starting to hit it's stride in high torque applications. I love the sound of a NA V8, but now I kinda want something toned down. So I'm fine with getting a turbo hybrid Tundra and the next V8 will be a HD truck or a Merc SLS AMG. The fuel mileage would be a nice bonus, if it gets high 20's on the highway I could save ~$200/ month on fuel at the current prices. Definitely doesn't justify buying a new vehicle, but it's a good start.

If the new engine has better performance and just as reliable as the 5.7, why Shit on it?

Because that’s the way it is on this forum sometimes. God forbid if you leave for a different manufacturer.

But if you have to buy a new vehicle anyway and you have two options that are pretty much equal in all other respects but one gets better fuel economy, that one will cost you less in the long run.

Because, for all its reliability high and mighty, this may be the most bass-ackwards truck forum on the Internet.

Never in my life have I seen a group of folks so desperate to justify a 14 year old design in a 5 year life cycle market.

I wanted to buy a half ton truck and never have to see my dealer again. This is my best chance at that, by a long shot.

No one is “desperate” to drive a paid off truck for 10-15 years without hassle. A 5-year life cycle keeps consumers in an unreliable vehicle with a never-ending monthly payment. While this is great for manufacturers, it’s is a crap deal for consumers.

Who else sells trucks at 25% off MSRP to move vehicles off the lots?

Who else has truck owners so nervous about water leaks they won’t brave a car wash?

    It ain’t Toyota, Doofus.

It’s getting old, but it’s still more reliable than the crap you’re eager to defend.

Reliability yes. Capability no. Due to that I had to hold my nose and buy another brand. I’m hoping the towing/payload is increased so I can get back into a Tundra.

This. 100% this. Yes, other trucks have more features, can tow more, etc., blah blah blah. I have no problem admitting that.

    BUT

By the time *EVERY* other truck I've owned got to 16K (which is the # of miles on my truck), they'd ALL had at least 2 recalls and one or two other non-recall related issues....and getting assistance for any of them was rough, to say the least.

THAT is why I bought a Tundra.....not because every one of them are more reliable, but statistically, yes, they are.

Will I buy a TT Tundra some day if it's made? You bet I will...but because of the reliability issues I've had with literally EVERY other vehicle, I'm not in a hurry to do so, as statistically the first year of a new model introduction tends to have more issues. I just bought my vehicle; I don't drive it more than 25 miles/day; and as such, even if gas doubles, I'm more than glad to hold onto it for several years while any kinks are worked out. That's not desperation to hold onto an old truck at all.

I agree with you that the Tundra doesn’t beat the competition in capabilities but I will argue that they are all equally capable in the 1/2 ton category. And the amazing part of it is that Toyota is still equal with a 14 year old platform. On paper the big 3 beat Toyota hands down but I am willing to bet that those 1/2 ton trucks are down right dangerous to with that kind of weight period. Especially the F150...complete exaggerated marketing BS (from all on them). Once your trailer starts hitting 8k and above that’s HD aka 3/4 territory. I don’t care what any manufacturer tells me especially with my commercial truck back ground.

So basically what I am getting at is if your loading your truck anywhere near the max payload/trailer weight...

    A) you simply need a heavier duty truck (especially if you are using a highway)

    B) a couple of hundred pounds of payload or 1500k more trailer weight isn’t going to make a significant difference when the truck is maxed out. Weather it a 8k trailer or 9.5 trailer it’s a ton of weight for a 1/2 ton.

The capabilities of all 1/2 tons are great but everything is getting so big (travel, cargo, flatbed trailers).

IMHO people are so fixated on those numbers and don’t realize when purchasing that driving ANY truck at near maximum capacity drastically affects SAFETY, braking ability, and emergency maneuvering.

Don’t bring a knife to a knife fight...a gun will work much better

I guess capability is in the eye of the beholder.

I don’t care what Ford and Ram puts on their stickers (if there was an emoji of a Ford exec whacking off, i would insert it here) I wouldn’t trust either of their 1/2 tons to tow my 7,000 lbs travel trailer across country multiple times a year or go off-grid like my Tundra.

As much as I hate GM, their half ton with the 3.0 duramx or the 6.2 would be trustworthy to get it done.

I have towed and hauled with all of them. So yeah, 14 year old design is more capable. I just got back from towing a 7,000 lbs travel trailer through the two worst winter storms SW Texas ever had last month. F150s off the road everywhere.

In my case it was the payload of the tundra forcing me elsewhere. If it was 1,500-1600lbs then I never would’ve gotten rid of it. Hopefully the new Gen has that payload with the 6.5’ bed crewmax. They’d sell like hot cakes and I’d be first in line.

There's Capability on paper and real world capability. I would argue that in real world capability, the Tundra is every bit as capable as the others. It's not scientific data, but I have heard from many people and myself included that the seat of the pants towing is better with the Tundra when towing similar loads than it is with the other 1/2 tons.

I see people posting this all the time. Genuinely curious—have you ever heard of it happening? Have you heard of a wrecked non-commercial truck and trailer being taken to the scales to determine if he was overweight? Is being over the door jamb numbers illegal? As far as I know, those numbers are simply recommendations to cover the manufacturer’s ass and are not law.

Guess what number is actually the law? The speed limit. But almost every internet forum payload policeman readily admits to doing 10-15mph over the limit or more, even though the exact same argument applies regarding loss of control, danger to others on the road, loss of insurance coverage in the event of an accident, etc.

Well, that turned into a bit of a rant. Not aimed at you.

Lots of real world intellegence going on in this group. This is always a good thing.
People learn from this stuff to avoid something bad happening to them.
Bench racing with numbers can be fun but, does not seal the deal in the real world.
For me, I needed a truck in the family due to my son getting rid of his.
After evaluating what was available and knowing what kind of work I need it for, Toyota was at the top of the list.
