I agree, I think around 2 inch lift is considered the most you really want to do without getting into trouble down the road with other parts on the truck.

From what I have read, some on here have reported getting more lift than expected from OME. YMMV

This morning pre-ignition. I wonder what the Ambient Temp was?:D

Bottom pic is after 20 miles straight highway drive time. Transmission Temps seem 15-20° higher with the Derale Valve.

Just stunk up the neighborhood dousing the rear suspension bolts in some pb blaster. Rear suspension work starts tonight.

How much beer should I have on hand? The rear shock top bolt access look like 2 beers each...

A long, flex-head ratchet wrench really helped me with that job. 1-2 beers should do it. But it is Friday so maybe have a 6-er on hand JIC.

I've put off this job longer then I should have, rear shocks look to be the original 4600 that came on trd package. So could have a fight on my hands.

You might be fine. I didn't have a hard time when I removed my 4600's which were 17 years old at that point. I think the hardest part is that the internal shaft wants to spin instead of the nut. Your PB Plast should help.

What are you putting in their place?

He’s right. A pair of nicely place vice grips will stop that as long as you plan on throwing the shocks away when you’re done.

Chit chatted with PHM about star wheel. He was able to help me understand how to adjust the wheel to take tension off the drum to take it off.

I was just going to do a test run adjusting the tension, and then readjust. Got more than I bargained for when I broke my multi-bit screw driver, and the bit fragment went in the peep hole.

Pulled the drum off for the first time ever! Did some parking brake cable testing. Looks like five clicks will disengage the mechanism enough to adjust the wheel. I'm not PHM though. No special hand techniques here. Just struggle.
    20210312_064250.jpg
    20210312_064256.jpg

While it was off, I made a video to help me understand, and see the mechanism in action. Its rather long, and it's just me working through it in my own way.

    https://youtu.be/1fGZTmzlxWk

All buttoned back up... for now.

I'll cut off the protective boot so I can get some vice grips on the shaft. That's worked in the past. It probably has the flat on the top post but a lot of good it does when you can't get to it...

Have some 5100s to go along with the wheelers 3 leaf packs to replace my current block.

Hope I'm pleased with results. I'm not really demanding of suspension so I think I'll be happy.

I knew I was shit canning my old rear shocks. I took an angle grinder under the truck with me, and ground two flat spots in the shaft. Gave me p-lenty to grab hold of.

I struggled with this first shock. I even cut half way through the shaft with a hack saw...

I was a noob back then. Still a field flunkie.

It was one of the first things I did to my "overhaul." May dig that post up for ole times sake. Bed time now. Up in 3.

Exactly what I had to do. I tried vise grips but they had no grip. I made some flat spots with the grinder and that got me out.

@bmc02 I would reserve one beer per shock and one beer for any technique building brainstorming you'll do, plus one beer for the celebration when you're done.

I remember when doing mine that I was able to get a crescent on the flat spot and use a ratcheting box end 14mm to make quick work of it.

How do I remember this you ask? Because I chased a rattle for about a year afterwards. It was driving me absolutely nuts. Turns out I left that crescent just chilling in the bottom of the crossmember. :annoyed:

3 beers... I'll need more then that. Probably start with a beer in the pre-op planning and tool gathering.

That's funny. I've forgotten a tool somewhere a time or two as well. My 98 4runner ate a socket that I'm positive is still rattling around somewhere in the frame.

Depending on how rusted or bad the top of the shock is, I've just removed the lower attachment and bent back and forth till the top post broke or until I could get the grinder to it. Or you could do it the "nice/clean" way and vice grips, remove the nut on top, etc. It'll take more beer that way...
