Been experiencing this problem off and on for a little while now. When I go to start my truck it sounds like it cranks once, pauses, cranks again once or twice, pauses again, and then cranks until it starts.

Any idea what is causing this?

How old is your battery? Second thought is a starter going bad. Third thought, Also there is a timer relay that cranks the starter for about 10-15 seconds and that depends on how fast the engine starts as to how long it will stay on, no more than sake of argument 15 seconds. It could be that timer relay that may be effecting your start.

The battery is brand new. Is there an easy way to check the starter?

Is it worth swapping out the relay? I'm assuming it's one of the plug and play deals in the fuse box?

The starter relay should be in the fuse box under the hood. But it sounds like one of 2 things. Either the starter solenoid is getting flakey and or the relay is acting up. If you are going to swap relays I would not use any other in the box I would buy the right one and try it. You can also look at the connector at the starter to make sure you have good connections and the wires are not corroded.

That's a good point. I'll see if the stealership has any. I will see if I can get a look at the starter wires too
