Need better gas mileage out of my 5.7

What can I do to get better mileage out of that beast? I have been thinking of intake and throttle body spacer

 

Remove the lift

 

Possibly a bed cover. They say that this helps. I have noticed about .5 better difference in MPG since I put mine on.

 

Go back to stock tire size, remove lift, get a Prius.

Intake does absolutely jack shit for the money.

You bought a tundra because it's an awesome truck and you lifted it because it would look even better......

be honest, you knew the tundy's got relatively bad gas mileage and the lift/tires would make it worse. NONE of us care about gas mileage when we do any of the above.

 

Tuner might help a bit, in thinking about getting one in the next couple of months.

I remember when people were cutting holes in their wheel wells and running a hose into the air filter box. What is that that Toyotas R&D forgot to do when building all Tundras to increase our gas mileage! I might need to go cut my truck up.

yep, just about the only way to really improve efficiency...that, or don't use the skinny pedal.

Unfortunately, MPG is definitely a shortcoming of the Tundra, largely in part to the 4.30 rear end (tow package, 4.10 non-tow), but that is also the main reason I bought the Tundra. I, like most Tundra owners, knew what they were getting into and just didn't care. Other truck manufacturers are putting smaller rear ends in their trucks to increase fuel economy and lure potential buyers, but who wants a 1/2 ton truck w/ a 3.08?

 

Stock set-up will be best for efficiency Definitely get rid of leveling blocks and rear blocks. Go with p-rated street tires. Supercharger will help with mpg, but you pay more for premium, so overall, you lose.

True.. I knew tundras sucked when it comes to gas but the engine blows always the comp!! The room inside the CM is what made me buy... gas went out the window when makin the decision on buying this truck... not sure but adding a tuner for performance help with gas??

 

Daily driver buddy. Its what I did. Got a beater to go back/forth to work. I know, first world solution.

 

Lets run a thought experiment to gain some perspective. Assuming you currently drive 15k / year, and you get 15 MPG. That means that @ $3 per gallon, a 1MPG increase would save you $187.50 per year. So with an intake and throttle body (assuming it would actually give you that 1MPG improvement), you're probably all in at around $400. Thats a little over 2 years before you start to see any real $ benefit.

Conventional wisdom is that an intake and throttle body will not provide that improvement, so basically you have your self a $400 under-hood ornament.

 

no doubt and you add in the reliability....its a no brainer!

not to mention, the slight increase in gas costs are made up by the lack of shop visits! At least it is in my eyes.(considering time and costs)

 

Trade it in and get a weak EcoBoost. Then you can roll around saying truck YEEEAAAA!

I agree with what you guys are saying. You don't buy any Toyota truck for the great mileage. You buy them because they haul the mail and will do it for as long as you own it. I have had Chevy, ford, and Toyota. I sold my Tacoma and bought one of these "new snazzy ecoboost fords". Had it a few months before driving it on a normal day and all lights came on the dash and it went into safe mode. If you don't like the mileage someone is out there wanting a Toyota truck for all the reasons I mentioned. I had a hard time finding a used one. Resale on Toyota trucks is amazing. Not trying to bash on you but you have to realize what you have. I thought that ford had best of all worlds, power, mileage, longevity and looks. Mileage was only ok and I wouldn't trust it to go anywhere. I went on a bit of a rant here but that's what I think!

 

That is the greatest thing I have seen since I saw the new Honda Ridgeline.

 

Compared to my camaro 2ss which uses 93 every fill up I'll drive my tundra all day. I bought a truck for a reason, not to worry about gas mileage and at least with this truck I can use plain Jane 87 octane lol

Omg iv been searching for this. I can't keep all my tires on the ground and the truck keeps trying to take off. This high performance mod will definitely help.

 

Assuming your experiment was close to realistic, most would be happy with the 15mpg. I'm getting 12.5 at best.
