Mice droppings inside cab

Hey guys im new to the forum. I bought a pre owened tundra crewmax two months ago in December. It has 90,000 miles on it and is in great condition. I changed out the cabin air filter this morning and noticed some mouse droppings in the filter. I absolutely hate mice and this is a huge bummer for me. I wanted to make sure that they didn't get above the headliner so I took off the over head console to check and sure enough there were mouse dropping there too. Don't really know what to do. I don't belive there are still mice in the truck because I never hear anything or smell anything bad in the truck. I haven't called the dealership yet because there closed, and don't even think they will do anything about it because its a pre owned vehicle, and if they were to do something about it im not sure exactly what would be done to the truck. Just wondering if any of you have had the same issue and what you did to solve it. Thanks guys

If you are parking in your garage, you should consider the 4 pack.

 

I actually had the same issue 2 winters ago in a Jeep Cherokee - I was in Canada for a weekend and had to park the Jeep off site at the hotel - when the shuttle took me to get my truck I noticed a small garbage bag was gone through on the passenger floor - I thought the Valet guy was looking for money and was a little pissed off , Then on the ride home the blower motor started making a clicking noise then seized up . Pulled it out to replace it and lo and behold the dead mouse dropped out of the housing !

 

I actually don't park in a garage but I suspect that the previous owner did and that's how the mice got in the truck. I'm wondering at this point if I should drop the headliner, and all the trim in the truck and do a deep clean inside and out

I'm just lucky that there's no sign of chewed wiring anywhere that would have been a disaster. I'm pretty upset with the dealership I'm sure they new this was an issue with the truck when they sold it to me because there were droppings in the cabin air filter

 

What makes you think they pulled the filter and saw the droppings?

Mice can come from anywhere and really aren't preventable. I've had them build a nest in the engine compartment within two nights at a trailhead. Pull headliner and clean it good if you want. Then drive it.

 

If it's something that you can do yourself, and get it all reinstalled such that it appears undisturbed, then go for it. The thought of mouse turd dust drifting down to my nose and mouth would bother me. The really important thing is to kill out the little bastards before they begin chewing on wires and interior.

If they are coming from outside your house, then it's a more difficult problem. There was a recent thread where members were putting traps UNDER the truck at night. Nothing like trying to rid the outdoors of mice, but the poster claimed his catch rate was diminishing. Do the search.

 

I'm just assuming that they replaced the cabin filter before they sold it to me. Idk maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions haha. Just pretty upset about it. I absolutely love this truck its just a bummer. This is the last thing I thought I would have to deal with. Now I'm going to spend every second of my time untill this is completely cleaned out. I won't eat or sleep untill this is dealt with haha. Did I mention that I absolutely hate mice?

 

Could anyone point me in the direction of a thread showing how to remove the headliner? I looked it up on YouTube and couldn't find anything

 

I highly doubt it.

The mice could have easily gotten in your truck after you bought it.

 

Build a bucket mouse trap and see if you catch any.

I wouldnt use poison. They will crawl back into a hole and die there.

 

I would have suggested just throwing a bug bomb in the truck. It'll kill anything in a small space. You'd just have to air it out for a while before driving it.

 

I've had one make a nest in the blower of the Camry we had years ago. I found a nest after trying to figure why it wouldn't blow much on any setting.
Before that in our old house, I heard some scratching in the kitchen blower. I turned it on and the scratching got worse. I banged the exhaust pipe and the critter dropped into the blower. That took care of the mouse problem time. It was just a bit messy to clean.

 

Those little bastards are bad news, I recently had to replace two of the four Knock sensors as they had chewed wires. $200+ in parts I have a shop so my mechanic did the work it called for 3hrs as you have to remove the intake manifold. We do at least one wiring repair a week. We live in a nice residential area. I bought a rodent repellent for under the hood and that was a waist of $. Fox urine is the only thing that I found keeps them away from my truck. Some one suggested parking in a different place for a while. if they dont find your truck they will move to someone else. I HATE MICE !!

 

Wife and I were camping in Vermont this past fall and we got to our campsite, unloaded, set up camp, hiked, and chilled. The next morning we go to pack up to head to our next stop in Maine and we noticed droppings in the back seat and some food and snacks had been chewed into. I had to calmly tell my wife there was a mice in the car at some time. This is her 2016 Accord EX-L. I searched high and low for the mouse. She wouldn’t get near the car until I did. To this day, I have no clue how or where that sucker got into the car overnight and left before we ever knew about it. Sucks and gross but it’s part of the fun of owning a vehicle!

 

Check out this post to see what others have done about blocking rodent entry via the vent inlet. Baited traps near the front wheels can also be helpful. I got 3 squirrels which had been chewing at my firewall insulation that way. I'd also make sure there is absolutely no food in the cabin. No need to encourage them to enter.
