It's cute seeing the Texas guys posting in this thread for the first time.

 

I feel for the Texas folks! Having snow and cold weather is one thing. Having snow, cold weather and NO power is something totally different!

I just spoke w/ a coworker of mine that has a 2 year old baby. Firewood is limited and power is spotty at best.

Texans are strong, they will pull though this.

Yeah, it's one thing when you're prepared for it, and another thing completely when you don't have the infrastructure. Up here in Manitoba where I live, for the last few weeks it's been -37C (-35F) overnight and in the mornings when I go to work. But we manage because we have the infrastructure. All our vehicles have block heaters, and all parking spaces are equipped with plugs so you can keep your car plugged in when parked for extended amounts of time (like all day or overnight). Most vehicles are equipped with winter tires (my Tundra included - Blizzaks FTW!!) so we actually have traction on the highways - plus people here are used to driving in the snow/ice. Our houses are insulated against this type of weather and our furnaces are sized for the extreme cold (my little 800sq.ft. house has a 60 000btu furnace). Our city crews/utilities are equipped to work in this kind of weather, as we have it for 4 months out of the year - they actually own substantial pieces of plow/sanding equipment that they can clear even the worst storm in a few days.

I'd wager that most of the people in the South don't even own a snowbrush or ice scraper, which to us Northerners is just something that we keep in our car all winter - and use everyday.

 

Sadly, the switch to "green energy" and the push to build all electric homes is the major factor in the rolling blackouts. The windmills are icing up and have to be de-iced before they can be put online. The all electric home are often equipped with heat pumps that work fine in moderate temps, but can't keep up. A friend recently installed a nice high efficiency heat pump, and found that it can only heat his house to 65 degrees. Some heat pumps have an emergency mode where they use heating coils, but that drastically increases the power consumption. Couple major increases in demand with major decreases in supply and you have a crisis in the making. If you look at an outage map in Texas right now, you'll notice a void in the reports in the area around the Comanche Peak Nuclear plant. Other power plants are natural gas fired, and those supplies have their limit. As exploration is further limited, those supplies will further diminish. If wind, solar, and natural gas are all in short supply and demand increases, heating and cooling (heats a real killer in Texas, just as much as the cold) will be, in effect, rationed. With luck, these temperatures are an anomaly, but I remember days like this from my youth. If the weather's cycling around to a few years of very cold winters, things are going to get worse.

Can we borrow a snow plow. Our roads are like concreted packed snow. Full of bumps. Just when I thought Louisiana roads couldn’t get worse.

 

All these northerners are getting mad because we are getting to play with tits for the first time... LET US ENJOY OUR 5 DAYS OF TITS!!

The good news is today is the end of Hurricane Season.

 

I suspect that the hurricanes don't give a rat's ass about our arbitrarily constructed calendars...stay prepared and be safe.

 

Random question:

So today I talked to a buddy who retired to Texas. He mentioned that the wind mills down that way are freezing up and or breaking. Just curious.......are these a different type or are there winter mods vs summer mods for these wind mills that make energy? You see them on every ridge line in PA and or in Western MD.......where temps are often times lower than what is going on in Texas and for longer periods during the winter. These seem to still be working and or turning when I see them in the winter.

Anyone have any intel?

Windmills in northern climates where ice and snow are expected have built in de-icing systems. De-icing systems cost money to install and maintain, and after all "It never gets that cold in Texas".

 

I've read that this is the reason that the windmills in Alaska don't have the same trouble.

I've also read that one of the possible blames for the rolling blackouts could be that apparently TX didn't want to connect to the networks of adjacent states back when there was talk of secession. But we should be cautious about that subject with the no politics mandate here (pre-apologies if even that has crossed the line).

 

Texas grew its own network from the days of rural cooperative power companies. There was no excess in those days to power other states, so the grid remained isolated. Later on, growing energy demands made it a losing proposition to connect outside the state (paying for outside electricity rather than improving production) and the grid remains isolated today.

 

I see. The bit that I read focused more so on the lack of ability to "import" electricity in a scenario such as what's being experienced presently. A bit narrower perspective for sure without the more encompassing history.

 

Central ky has been getting hit this week pretty hard by old man winter. Much more than the past few years. I've been super impressed by my falken wildpeaks snow and ice performance.
