I am looking at trying to get some basic rock Sliders fabricated for first gen access cab. I want the most basic setup I can get. Just tubing, no steps. Does anyone have any advice on design features, tubing dimensions, attachment points, etc. I need to draw something up for the fabricator to work up a quote but I'm not sure I know enough yet to do that.

Think there's a cad file or a schematic circulating around here somewhere for some sliders.

@skywalker474 has a good looking set. Looks like he fab'd them himself. May be able to point you in the right direction.

Are you wanting welded on or bolt on sliders?

I think I would prefer they bolt on for ease of removal if necessary. However, if that is going to compromise their strength I am willing to go welded on.

It shouldn't compromise anything. I have bolt on sliders and I'm able to lift the vehicle with a jack from my sliders. You just have to drill into the frame.

Last we talked, I don’t know if he plans on making any/many more. It’s a lot of work and tig welding isn’t cheap. His design is wicked smaht how it mounts to/into the frame rails

Yeah no doubt, I really like his design and build thread. I'm way overdue for sliders and he's local. :fingerscrossed:

@Gungoboom hey man, if i get a chance, ill see about running the frame plates. And i can get ya straight cut dimensions for the sq tube.
If you have a buddy with a bender, you can come up with any outer round tube style ya like!
Ide have to check who messaged me avout the plates, maybe was @FrenchToasty (sliders look good man!), to make it worth while ide prolly make 3or4 sets of plates and hardware to go with. Even to get a 90deg bend, the press is manual and ya gotta dial in what the dye stop is set at, thousandths make a difference.
As FrenchToasty said, the weld time kills me.
Also i dpnt have a bender&notcher so i have my buddy bend and notch the round tubes($150).
Even when i try to get 1k for these i really dont end up with much net and the overall time is quite alot.
But im glad people like em! Thank you the kind words guys!

What part of the country are you in? How many shops have you talked to?

Not to be an ass, but I wouldnt have any fabricator who couldnt help draw out some simple sliders make my sliders. They should at least be able to help you with guidelines on what their styles and preferences are. Most offroad shops will be intimate with sliders and making them.

Its really worth having someone who knows something about offroad armor building it. Especially given how easy sliders are (ive made 3 sets in last 2 months after work).

Not all bolt on sliders require drilling.
I believe the heat generated from welded sliders is more likely to compromise their strength.
You have received a lot of good information and response to your questions and probably have what you need . If you are still going with your already selected fabricator, I would suggest that you go to multiple websites and look at pictures of their bolt on sliders and print pictures. Then between you and your fabricator you will be on your way with a design to start from

I also realize that nobody really did give a lot on basics for Specs for you.

Standard tube sizes are 1 3/4" or 2" (either round or square). .120 wall is minimum most folks will recommend. You can go DOM on round if your baller and like to smash on things too hard insteading SLIDING off rocks, HREW works for most people.

That might be the case for the 3rd gens, but no one makes a bolt on slider for our trucks that doesn't require drilling into the frame. We have very few options available to us.

    @FirstGenVol atleast for the AC!

    My tube sizes are:
1.5sq .120wall for the 6 spars. Gives me like 3/8" clearance or so at the edge of sheetmetal. Even welded spars, theres always deflection, metal is a spring, i look at some others with the kicked up outer round tubes and the door barely clears just sitting, good luck opening your door when on a rock. I tried a 5deg kick at first and my doors would contact when i picked up the truck by the slider with the forklift. Also add 2 gussets! Half the welded garage ones i see dont have gussets! Huge stress riser.
My main sq tube running down the length is cut on 8ft, and its 2x2 .188 wall. I tried .120 wall my first go and it pulled a bit. The .188 is so heavy it doesnt even need clamping (but i do anyways).
And the outer round is 1.75dia .120wall.
    Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone. I do still need to talk to a few other shops. This is just some preliminary inquiry to get an idea what I should be looking for. I just ordered my lift and tires about 30 mins ago so it will probably be a few months before I'm ready to jump into the sliders.

Started plating these ones tonight. 2"x2" 1/8" inner and and 1.75" .120 wall on all the round. I think with these trucks being fairly large 1.75" is minimum and 2" would look better but I dont have that die.

My taco is a mix of 1.75" and 1.5" so the step up to 1.5" and 2" i think works.
