So...do I go TRD Pro, 1794 or new SR5

So posted a week or so ago, was considering a TRD Pro (new).

Now that I've spent some time debating it and talking to dealers - what I'm finding is TRD Pro is available - but I might have to go with Black (don't mind) or White (not a top 3 choice in color) - worse yet....I have to go CrewMax. (Not that I don't like the bigger cab...I personally am usually the only person in my truck, and $$ wise - paying more for something I don't use doesn't make sense).

Now a 1794 popped up locally - 2020, 8k miles - ask 50k. Can probably negotiate off a grand or so...nice truck - I really like the interior but - its white and its obviously a CM.

Finally, I could just go with a SR5 DC new - pick my color, options and then upgrade things outside of dealer. Its the cheapest route - but honestly this is a once in a lifetime purchase for me...and I kinda want to get the nicest I can.

This will be a "long term" buy for me - I'm 46 and expect it to be my last vehicle before retirement. I use my truck as a 2nd vehicle - so maybe 5k miles a year.

Used makes more sense - but ask on late model used is damn near new sticker.

Which way should I go ? I would like things like side sense/tech package, LED lights and like the looks of the Pro...but feels like the 10k price difference in a Pro available to me and a SR5 DC with some options could be better spent just upgrading things on my own the SE5 is "lacking".

The 1794 seems to check alot of boxes- and price wise sits between the 2 others - and i dont mind being a 2nd owner. But how do they compare - specs wise they all seem to be the same aside from TRD suspension (which can be changed on anything i buy). Alot I like here - but haven't gotten to demo one yet.

 

I actually saw a video a few months back stating that the SR5 is the best dollar to value purchase. Get the SR5 and build it how you want it. They all have the same engine and tranny. The rest of the options are up to you and what you want to spend.

 

Took the words out of my mouth. That’s what I did and I’m happy for it. SR5 for the win.

 

Pros are nice for sure, but if you plan to make changes to suspension or others things, you can start with a SR5 and will be way ahead $ wise, even with substantial upgrades and mods.

Used prices are high and in many cases, new is a better buy because you may only save a couple thousand dollars.

Have you looked at any limited models? Hits some of the wants you have for packages and folks are getting them for decent price vs a PRO or 1794.

 

Go look at @ElNopal 's truck. It's an SR5, and with some effort and child labor it's every bit as nice as any other trim.

-pick your leather heated seat- katskinz
-pick your suspension
-LEd the whole thing
And you’re in the ballpark of 3-5k in mods depending on what you choose.

1794’s are awesome and have a ton of the features. Seems to me most people either love or hate those interiors.

 

Mine is an SR5 as well.

 

Not considering a limited? Once you get the packages required to get LED headlights, keyless entry/push button start, and a 38 gallon tank on an SR5, you’re pretty close to the price of a Limited. And they also add a lot of little things like leather seats, power sliding rear window on the Doublecabs and power passenger seat I believe.

 

When I bought my truck in Sept, the price difference between the SR5 with upgrade pkg and the Limited was almost 8K.

 

I have a 1794 and love it, but if I didn't want a crew cab, and thought this was going to be a ~20 year purchase, I wouldn't buy a crew cab....

Respect for the work you've done to it, and the fact that you've made it a family project. That adds more value than the factory options would. Your kids are going to fight over who gets Dad's truck.

 

If you're like me and dislike chrome take a look at the SX package. As mentioned you can add mods. Only thing missing from this package that matters very much IMO is the option for 38 gallon tank and LED headlights. Cost for me was $40,500 before TTL and accessories.

I'm about to be 39 and like you I plan to keep this truck for the next 20 years

Look for a SR5 TRD Sport. Good looking trucks.

 

If you're looking at a 2020 1794, 8k miles - ask 50k then I'd say look around for your "long time buy". I'm similar age and have the same stance. Get the best (1794, Platinum, etc.) you feel secure doing right now. Like me, you're in it for the long haul. Very easy to mod suspension, wheels, etc. Not so easy adding the better leather, options included on the 1794/Platinum, etc. from a SR5.

 

When I bought my truck, an SR5 with the SR5 upgrade and the TRD Offroad package was only like 4K cheaper than my truck.

 

First, you can't go wrong with any of the cabs and trims. There all great trucks! I buy pros because there the king of the hill. Most who buy other trims try to make it into a pro. But if it wasn't born a pro it never will be. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. It's always been that way. You can put badges on a malibu but it will never be an ss chevelle. I also trade every 5 yrs. So I get top dollar for the pro. That's not a concern for you since your keeping long term. But having the king of the tundras may be. I prefer the crewmax. I rarely have someone in the back but the extra space is great for when I do and nice for bringing home groceries. And I absolutely love the roll down back window! In the summer I open all of the windows including the sun roof and rarely use the air conditioner. The shorter bed in the crewmax is plenty for me. I've never wanted for more. As far as new and used. With the crazy prices for used I would definitely get new. And no matter what the dealer says. You can shop around and get whatever color you like. I never settle for something less than what I really want. If you do you may never really be happy and regret it for as long as you own it. In the end it's your decision. I went SR5. Decided against the Pro because to me it’s barely more than a very expensive appearance package. I really don’t like the hood scoop or all the interior branding. And the grille sensor cover on the new Pros sticks out against the honeycomb like a sore thumb. It just looks like a rushed, poor design.

Aside from the front coilovers and rear shocks, the Pro is functionally the same as all other 5.7L 4x4 Tundras. No more real capability, no rear locker, no other off-roading goodies aside from a very thin skid plate.

For me, it made more sense to start with a blank slate and build it how I want. I really enjoy the process. My goal is to build a Tundra the way I wish it came from the factory—Pro suspension, rear locker, better off-road tires.

Then I’ll beat the hell out of it and see what else I think it needs.

 

Get a limited double cab trd and be done

 

If you like playground basketball orange seats go with the 1794

go with a platinum and add the pro suspension if you’d like, then nuke the rest of the chrome

 

Hmmm. This was me a month a go. Found a 2019 TRD PRO , with quite a bit of extra mods to it for 47500, 21k miles. I had ordered a 2021 limited . Cancelled it. Not looking back. PRO is what you want if you use the truck for what its designed for.

 

Two points, which I think are relevant to the OP’s question:

1) Aside from the suspension, it’s the same truck. And the suspension is actually a problem if you tow/haul because it levels the stance. With the Tundra’s weak stock leafs (hate to admit it, but it’s true), it’ll squat if you don’t modify the rear with shackles, air bags, AALs, or new leaf packs. Read through the Pro sub-forum; everyone is trying to figure out how to use their truck as a truck without it squatting. I wanted the extended travel and compatibility with stock UCAs and stock wheels that the Pro suspension provides. But I ended up adding CB +2s to add some rake and keep from squatting when the bed is full. As my leafs settle over time, I’m going to have to do more than just shackles that add an inch. Something the OP should be aware of depending on his intended use.

2) Seems that people with the lower trim levels run them harder. Maybe it’s that we’re a bit less invested and not worried about getting a scratch or pin stripes or putting lots of miles on our trucks. I see far more ceramic coated, detailed-every-week Pros than any other trim level on this site. I’m not knocking how people choose to use or care for their trucks. It just seems more Pro owners tend to really baby their trucks to keep that maximum resale value intact. Again, I’m not knocking it. It just seems to me that SR, SR5, and Limited owners run ‘em harder.

 

I got the 1794 cause of the price and SUNROOF but if I had the money I would have got the Pro. Also the Pro was hard to find, closest one was 2 hours away for $60k used.

 

Sticking with the OP’s desire for a DOUBLE CAB and still wanting some creature comforts, I’d be shopping for a Limited with the TRD OR package. It will get you a good starting point with all of the same extras as the TRD Pro (Dual-zone climate control, heated seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, LED headlights, power sliding rear window, power passenger seat) and a marginally better suspension than the base models/Platinum/Limited and wheels that aren’t bad (I personally really like the TRD OR wheels and had them on my 2008 when I bought a set of take-offs in 2015).

From there, you’re looking at a $4-5k to dechrome the exterior, get a dual exhaust, and upgrade to a suspension that will be better than the TRD Pro. At that point, you’re only missing the fully blacked out wheels (get the TRD’s powder coated?) and the non-functional (but aggressive looking) hood scoop. And the special stitching in the seats and stamping in the bed. But you’ll arguably be able to find more choices for color and should save considerably over the TRD Pro (or the used 1794 that they want $50k for) and you’ll get the cab configuration you want.

 

SR5 all day. So cheap with no packages.Build it how you want after. I wanted a bench seat or bust. only downside is the gas tank size with the bench but I can live with it. My kids dont last more than 300 miles anyway without needing a break. And a smoke for me lol

 

I'm an SR5 man myself but the typical recommendation would be to get the one with any tech/interior features that you can't live without. Things like suspension, led lights and even leather seats and colour matched body parts are easier to add yourself than sunroof, safety features or whatever it is you may want in that department.

I would definitely go new and for your needs, I would definitely go DC unless you just can't live without the 1794 features. You could also look at a non-1794 Platinum as I believe it has most of the same features but should be a little lower price.

The dealerships around me tend to have new Platinums leftover at the end of the year for $10k off, though the pandemic and the new model coming out may throw a wrench into that.

 

If you can find one, look at a Double Cab Limited.

 

If it’s once in a lifetime purchase get the one with the most features, platinum or 1794 depending on your preference on looks, you can do suspension aftermarket and still have all the creature comforts.
