Spit-ballin' a heated steering wheel in a Tundra

2018+ LC200s have a heated steering wheel...could a person tie the harness wires to the heated seat harness to turn on only when the seats are engaged too? I'd rather not only consider a cover and have it tastefully looking like factory plus...any thoughts or is this a dead horse?!

 

Anything’s possible. I can only imagine what a LC steering wheel is gonna run you, and then you’ve also got to get there air bag for it and make sure it wires up correctly. And mapping all the steering wheel controls too...

Money and time. I’m guessing it would take a fair amount of both.

Not sure I’d want it on whenever my seats heaters are on though... right now the heaters are rarely off, but it’s not cold enough for me to want the wheel heated.

 

This is great. I laced mine up with leather and would love heated.

Keep in mind I'm in Texas, and I do use my heated seats more than I thought I would..
Only installed them for the wife to be comfy.
She uses them in the summer when I have the AC cranked...

 

My wife has one in her Subaru Forester. She likes to rub it in that my truck with the “aggressive hood scoop” doesn’t have one.

 

I vote for the alternative of moving somewhere warm.

This island is 40 miles wide and has a million people on it. We are already stacked on top of each other. I suggest Texas. They have plenty of space!

 

My wife’s Tahoe has a heated wheel and I have to admit; for having thought it was a useless fluff feature, it is really nice.

 

They have 12 volt ones with a cord, good if you are going in a straight line

@HulkSmurf14 did you ever find a good option? I see that vivid racing one but it has like 30+ options you have to go through lol. Are there any threads where someone has done this yet?

 

also that Vivid racing one doesn't actually say it can ADD HEAT, it only asks if your vehicle already has heat and if you want to keep it. Obviously non of our Tundras comes with factory heat...

 

first very cold day I've driven new2us 1794. My wife likes the fake wood top of wheel, I was neutral. But dang that is cold.

I took a look at some of the cheapie plugin wheel heaters, guess the idea is you either plug it in while truck warms up then unplug to drive ... or you don't turn any sharp curves ;(

We don't get too many super cold days in Oklahoma, I have a pair of fingerless gloves that will work well. Grabbed a pair for my wife, another stocking stuffer .... shhh, don't tell her

Lol that's awesome...yes, technology has made many men into pansies of yesterday...but sheesh, if Ram/Dodge can offer this option on their funny trucks, I'd give it COULD be in a DIY option on ours. @M3Tundra-JK ,negative, I haven't gone past this post on this optimization...I DO know that the LC has a heated steering wheel and surely it could be wired to work like it was factory on the tundra...but for $500...when I was looking, heated steering wheels that look factory can easily be had with gloves...ha! I WOULD support the economy tho and have one to use if there was a slightly cheaper version that I didn't have to option out by my plumbing company; I AM still interested in this feature tho...Pansies-Express, here I come!

 

I recreated that last year during the freeze in Texas. Had to deliver firewood to some friends about 20 miles away. Only four wheel drive vehicle was my k5 rock crawler. No doors, no top. An hour each direction in 0* weather with a foot of snow and ice on the ground. All the jeep folks were parked on the side of the road with all their fancy heaters and doors and I’m snow bombing in overalls and a face mask and gloves.

Yes it is.I have the 1794 wheel in my truck and that plastic wood is like a block of ice when its really cold.

 

Has nobody done a heated steering wheel in a 2.5gen yet?
Adding this to my list. I hate the factory steering wheel anyways.
I already need to pull open the dash to clean the vents and heater box, might as well run a couple of wires while in there

I've been thinking of using motorcycle heated grip elements under a steering wheel cover. In theory it would work fairy well, and you could likely find a place to hide all the wires.

 

Just adding more spit to the ball as I know nothing about electronics:

I feel like if someone were to do the leather wrap on their wheel - there must be heater wire you could add underneath, then piggyback on the wiring harness that goes from the control panels through the steering column. Add a switch to the location of your choice and any necessary fuse(s) and have a totally clean and legit install.

Seems theoretically very do-able, no?
