What do you TOW with your Tundra?

Air bags are better in my opinion. The bump stops on my brothers half ton rider rougher than his 1 ton with airbags. The bump stops when you're going down the road if you hit a bump react and will continue to bounce a little.

 

Anyone hauling a double axel travel trailer with a Tundra should be using a WDH. It actually spreads out the load between the front and rear axels when properly setup. The good ones also provide sway control. You won’t get this from airbags.

no. Bags raise your rear level to where you want and the wdh shifts load around the axles

 

I use both together. Equal-i-zer WDH/Sway control with Air-lift 5000 with onboard compressor. very happy with the setup.

This is the one I use. My trailer is a 21 foot tandem axle. Dry weight is 3800 lbs with 410 lbs tongue weight.

Just picked up this 34', 6,400lbs badboy at Christmas for some fun family trips.

 

This is very similar to my set up. Trailer almost the same length, dry weight 3,950. Thanks.

LOL, ya we said our limit was 30' then it went to 32' then we found 34' and fell in love with it. My last one was 25' so this will take some getting used to.

 

Are your towing mirrors extensions or a complete swap? If a swap, are they compatible with automatic folding mirrors (auto are on my 1794).

I don’t have air bags on my current truck but I have researched this combo a lot before I bought my TT a couple years ago. Here are my conclusions:

You can run a WDH with airbags, but only with a specific PSI setting. In your original installation you would need to set the PSI level on the air bags then dial in your WDH setup. When setting up your WDH you must measure your space the space between your front tire and the wheel well, should increase 0”-3/4” more when loaded for proper weight distribution. If you set your airbags to a different PSI your WDH settings will be off.

My recommendation is to get a quality WDH and leave it at that. I personally am at my Tundras full payload capacity and really don’t see a need for airbags. My honest opinion is if you need airbags to go with your WDH you are either overloaded or the WDH is not setup right. Just my .02 but others could disagree.

 

Thanks A-A-Ron (Key & Peele substitute teacher skit?). My WDH works fine, and my sag is minimal. I was used to the upgraded leaf pack on my 2010 Taco. It really handled the trailer nicely, but when I wasn't towing, the ride was pretty stiff. I sold my beloved Taco & got my 2017 a few months ago b/c my 61y/o body was ready for the luxury!!

 

I run sumo springs on mine in place of airbags. When hauling or towing I really like how they firm up the rear suspension

 

Yeah, it’s one of my favorites. I used to get called A-A-Ron a lot, still do occasionally.

 

I’m having a hard time understanding this - are you saying the the gap between your front tire and front fender well increases when using a WDH?

 

It isn’t the WDH increasing the gap, it is the weight of the trailer on the rear that is lifting the front end. The WDH transfers weight from the rear of the truck to the front. When properly setup your front wheel well gap would be the same with the trailer connected (or slightly greater) then your truck normally is unloaded. There will be a slight sag in the rear but very minimal, if within payload specs.

 

It increases when you put the trailer on the hitch, the weight behind the rear axle takes weight of the front axle. The goal of the wdh setup is to get it back to the same amount of weight on the front axle as before you hooked up the trailer.

 

I’d always read the front end should go down (not up) when you’ve properly adjusted the WDH. If the front end goes up, it would indicate you’ve unloaded the front end and it isn’t carrying anymore weight than it was before you hooked up the trailer, right?

 

Based on the research I did and the installation manuals I saw they did not want the front end lower when loaded. Aiming for the same but can be slightly higher.

 

Hitch companies Have varying suggestions. Some say aim to return front end height to the same, some say return the front end height to half of what it raised.

your front springs can affect this. With 600lb springs in my icons for example. No matter how much tension was on my wdh bars, they didn’t compress much

 

This a pic with 940lb tongue weight with proper weight distribution applied. No air bags, no helper springs. Just a few trips to the CAT scales to dial it it. This hitch is a Reese Straight Line Hitch with 800lb bars. I have found that it is best to run the lighter bars on the Tundra.
My advice is to park on a level surface & put a level on your camper frame AFTER weight distribution is applied. Try to get a level camper or a hair nose down is also acceptable.

 

If anyone is looking for a REALLY GREAT WDH, may i suggest a Hensley Hitch, I have one for my 27' and this hitch is AWESOME. I bought it for my Tacoma when i towed the same trailer and it works amazingly, I now use it on my Tundra and again, it is amazing. Spreads the weight perfectly and absolutly NO SWAY. Look them up and view there video's on there web site. I will say this, they are pricey, but you can't put a price on safety.

 

From what I have heard the Hensley is the best one. You definitely pay for the quality/design though.
