What would cause this skid mark on truck?

Anyone know what could potentially cause this? At first I assumed someone’s door but not sure seeing as how it’s both at the very top and at the flared portion above the fender.

Looks like it will buff out but still pretty annoying. Going to check cameras at work tomorrow and see if a black vehicle happened to park next to me.

Who knows. It could be a million different things. My mom was driving down the road one day and something appeared to fall from the sky(literally), she saw it coming but couldn't avoid it. It dented the A pillar of her Mercedes. Even the body shop was shocked because it dented one of the hardest parts of the car.

The good news is that it's on top of your paint so it will buff out. Just clean it really well first.

Maybe someone near you had a flat and was handling the flat and spare in close quarters so to speak. Might have accidentally dropped it even while trying to zig zag around mirrors. Might have even tripped or slipped on lug nuts or tools on the ground. Just sayin, it fits the looks.

It could be so many different things. Maybe someone carrying a large garbage can with wheels? Or maybe someone trying to climb in the bed with boots on? Have you been at a drive thru lately? I had a similar mark on side of my truck after going through a drive-thru. I mis-judged the space I had and accidently rubbed against the little plastic flag lane markers.(I don't know if there is a technical name for them lol) It didn't do much damage, no dents...just slight surface scratch like yours. I just buffed it out and looks like it was never there.

I have almost the exact same marks on the side of my white work chevy. It was from my former coworker being too lazy to open the tailgate to pull something out and instead decided to drag it up and over the rail and down the side of my truck. Then, being it was a god damned air compessor, realized it was heavy and pushed against my bed as it slid down the side. He was a pleb.

Definitely not a door: (1) Doors are heavy enough to take paint off right down to the steel and dent it, (2) A door high enough to hit at the top of your bed couldn't be any vehicle except a really tall lifted Big Truck, (3) Vehicle doors are convex outward, couldn't hit both at the top of your bed and at the lower body crease.

It appears someone short attempted to load something relatively heavy (for them) into the bed of your truck by pushing it up and over the side rail. (Wife? Kids? Anyone borrow your truck?)

They weren't quite strong enough to complete the press the first time, so they let it down a little, got a new grip and tried again. When they let it down, it marked the lower body crease down the body as it was lifted again. Inconclusive as to the object ever getting loaded, the mark trails off down your bed side. Someone might have been trying to use your truck bed side as a rest while loading.

As I said, this object would be relatively heavy for the lifter (heavy enough to mark your paint), about maybe 3+ feet tall, smooth surface painted black (cheaply), and probably about 15" wide from the spacing of the lower body crease marks. Sounds like an old fashioned speaker cabinet with a ton of iron magnet in it. :notsure:

Yeah I agree it’s unlikely a door just weird since nobody would be loading or unloading stuff out of my truck without me knowing and it wasn’t there yesterday. Wondering if when I was in the grocery store last night someone attempted to take my yeti cooler out of the bed before realizing it was tied down with a steel cable. What I thought was black paint could have been scuff marks from the rubber legs or hatches / handles of the cooler. I went back to this store today and the side I parked on is the only side that doesn’t have cameras installed.

Looks like someone was dragging a dirty black compressor hose over the bed.

If they only get the Yeti part way out where the legs or handles would hit the bed side before the cable stopped it, that makes sense. The thief would have been trying to stay below the top of the bed to avoid detection.

Yep I have some extra length on the cable so I can let it sit off the side of my tailgate at an angle to drain all the way. It was also empty at the time which would explain there not being any dents in the side of the truck also if it suddenly stopped while they were trying to snatch it out. I’m going with this theory until I check the cameras at work tomorrow lol

Just sucks that working people can't even have a cooler without it being locked down nowadays!! The time has come to start setting examples! Two eyes for an eye time!!!

Sounds like a good reason to get a lockable hard tonneau cover.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, your solution only works sometimes. You can do the tonneau, have nothing under it, and they tear it up to see inside. We really need our tax dollars to be spent more effectively. Already pay for security, we just don't receive it. On top of that, we also have to overcome corruption. So many problems, never should have let it get so far out of hand. I mean when the house is on fire, you don't call the fire department after the whole neighborhood becomes ashes. Very interesting and challenging future lies ahead!

True. I hope to add a camper shell eventually so that should solve that issue.

Believable if someone other than me drove the truck!

You could also keep a $10 garage sale bought ice chest in the bed as an alternative.

If our tax dollars were spent effectively the truck could be dusted for fingerprints and just maybe the culprit would be getting questioned. Burglars pulled my neighbors memory card from a digital camera and left it behind, but police wouldn't check for prints. We have problems!!

True. It’s been locked down in the back of my truck for about 5 years now without a problem though so at this point it’s just a piece of the truck. If someone wants it bad enough and happens to have bolt cutters with them than maybe I’ll learn my lesson one day. But I tend to unlock it and toss it in the back seat if I’m somewhere that I’m not comfortable leaving my truck for long periods of time.

Thieves make me so mad. Human skid marks. When I was a kid, my dad never locked his door. Built a storage building with a small clubhouse on the second level for my brother and me. He left the sliding doors open all the time. I don’t think I ever saw them shut, let alone locked. Kept yard tools, an awesome go-cart he built from scratch, and his motorcycle in it. Never had any issues.

These days, everyone I know has everything locked down at all times.

Personally, I just try my best to outwit them and pay insurance in case I fail. There are ways, you just need to be creative. Kinda like real life Tom and Jerry or home alone! I have told my neighbors more than once to take preventative measures, they didn't listen, and then they are like "I know, you told me".

Truck needed a bath anyways I guess. Cleaned it up and snagged some megs rubbing compound from the store. Good as new.
