Best Gen-ECGS bushing tool

Might be a good idea to order new lower ball joint bolts in case you break any like I did. It's better to have them on hand. I would throw new ones in and keep the old ones as spares.

The part number for my 02 is 90119-10933 but you'll want to make sure it's the same for your 06. I believe the axle seal is 90311-47012 but I would confirm as well.

 

I’ll look somewhere, but I know the 06 have bigger bolts, 12 vs 14mm I think

I just ordered this clamshell bushing for my 4runner - I'm having it regeared and an air locker added so the shop is going to install this as well. Do you think a well equipped shop that regears 5-10 vehicles a week will need this tool?

 

I’m guessing they deal a lot with bearings and different methods of pulling different bearings; and would have some sort of specialty tool to do the job. But you can always show them timmys video or show them a pic, and ask them if they think they can do it without

 

When I mentioned it to him today he said "yeah no problem" but I tend to worry about stuff. =\

 

Maybe ask to see the old needle bearing, before you hand them the keys.

 

Anyone want to save a few bucks on the removal and install tools I just did mine today. Used once paid the $75 + shipping. Sell for $60 shipped. worked perfect

It is a different part number, 7.5” vs 9” diffs, not sure if the axels would be the same size or not?

Lol. My fault. I did a search on my phone and replied. It’s 9” for a 3rd gen. Just trying to save someone a few bucks.

Getting the dreaded wum wum wum's. Did a full front end shake down and have determined its the driver's side front diff bearing. Used my "automotive stethoscope" to pin point it (piece of 3/4" drain hose). I get some metallic tinkling noises when spinning the wheel at this location. Get the rumbles previously mentioned over 20mph. Putting the truck in 4hi changes nothing though. Still makes the noise. It seems everyone has said that this is the way to diagnose it for sure. My needle bearings sound destroyed though, so I'm guessing it is still the problem.
Few questions:
1. Is the tool available? If so, preference on beer style as we have a great variety of local brews to cover tool rental.
2. Sounds like replacing the seal is the way to go when performing this repair? Mine is not leaking and it appears the bearing comes out with the seal in place. Is this the appropriate part number if replacing?

3. Appears this only affects the drivers side as the passenger is ball bearing style?
4. Anyone find needle bearing bits in the front diff case?

I didn’t drain my diff after the needle bearing replacement but my bearing was all intact and I couldn’t even see how it would be bad. Still gave me vibrations and noise though. New ECGS bushing solved the problem. Sounds like you have a wheel bearing issue though.

needle bearing noise should go away with going into 4hi.

Needle bearing noise is a mostly random vibration noise that doesn’t change with speed.

wheel bearing noise would speed up with vehicle speed.

That is the part# I ordered last May.

Negative. Mine was still perfectly intact when I removed it.

The only thing I would add is that I wish I had replaced the seal on the other side, where the axle connects to the hub. Mine was all crusty after ~19 years. I'd order that one too if I were you.

 

Gotcha, I'll inspect that side as well.

 

I think @KarmaKannon has had the worst actual failure/most in need of the needle bearing replacement.
Like @FirstGenVol said, replace the seal, you will damage it removing it, and it has to be removed to pull the bushing.
@KNABORES where are you located again? Cali? I’ll drink most things, IPAs are usually my fancy beer, I’m not so into porters or stouts but I’d try a good one.
The tool is sleeping under my welding table, ready to help the next 1st gen, just PM me whenever your ready and have all the parts

Is the one for work any different than the ECGS tool?

 

Probably. It’s the steering worm gear tool. Works pretty well for removing them.
