Folks, i just took my 2017 Tundra Crewmax to the local Toyota dealership for an oil change and tire rotation at 40,000 miles. i got a call shortly after dropping it off telling me i had a camshaft leak. I am certainly not a mechanic so what would cause something like this? Also, as "dependable" as Toyotas are supposed to be should this happen at 40,000 miles?
its covered under warranty and they gave me a loaner car for a couple of days but just would not have thought something like this would happen at 40,000 miles.
    Thanks

Never heard of this before. Must be an isolated incident.

If you mean the cam tower leak, there’s a 1000 threads about it. Some have had it under 10k miles.

If that's not what you are talking about, then stuff happens. My rear main seal and water pump leaked around 50k in my 2010.

Sounds like the dreaded "cam tower leak" to me as well.

You and I are about out of powertrain warranty, so it's a good thing the dealer brought it to your attention now, rather than later when it was out of warranty. Good dealer, and he wants to keep you as a customer. I believe Toyota has begun to recognize this leak as a real problem.

Ask the service department if they're doing one side or both sides. If this is the "cam tower leak" then, the repair goes as linked below. At 4:42, technician has removed the cam frame, cleaned up everything, applied sealant (black), and is just about to replace the cam frame (aka "cam tower"). The leak occurs where he has applied the sealant.

Oh, yeah, that's the culprit. And, it's not hiding behind a little seepage...it's dripping. Housing, frame, tower, all the same.

You might inquire about them doing both sides while they're at it. If there's no leakage on the other side, they might decline, but the other side may be just as likely to leak in the future.
