Interested in what you guys think would be the best tonneau cover for those that still want close to full use of the bed for hauling.

I’m considering a tonneau to have better use of the bed for dry cargo storage during the rainy season here in the PNW; however, I still want the ability to easily use the bed for hauling things like power tools, dirt, lumber, etc. that the tonneau would get in the way of.

What has been your experience and what would you recommend?

Here’s a link to what I’ve had on my last three trucks.

    https://www.autoanything.com/tonneau-covers/truxedo-truxport-roll-up-tonneau-cover

No fancy bells and whistles, but it’s functional. It’s rolls up easily into a 6” diameter against the back of the cab with straps to hold it. When it’s covering the bed, the bed stays dry. Also, the Velcro keeps it tight and quiet. If it’s making noise, you need to adjust it. I had a trifold before and did not like that. It either covers 1/3 of the bed or you need to remove it. Just my .02 hope it helps.

There are different types of covers. Your choice will depend on how much you want to spend and which design type you prefer.

I chose the Undercover Flex which is similar to the MX4 recommended above. My cover has three hard sections that are hinged to fold. There are rubber seals across each joint, the sides, the front and the rear. I have never observed any leakage inside the bed, even from washing. My truck is garaged.

If I have a less than a full bed load, I fold as many hard sections as I need if the load is taller than the bed sides. Each folded section can be secured to the next forward section using attached straps. When all three sections are folded for using the entire bed, there are struts on each side that support the folded assembly in the vertical position behind the rear of the cab.

Undercover Flex starts at $879. They have more expensive choices, but I haven't studied those.

I have a Crew Max and a roll up cover. One thing to keep in mind is that the CM bed is short. On many occasions I have had mine rolled up and pressed against the back of the cab or just popped it off so I could get the tailgate closed on what I was carrying. I think this is less of an issue on a DC.

The perfect bedcover is a unicorn. Folding covers are not waterproof. Ive had 2 styles.

if you have the deck rail system, the undercover flex is pretty watertight for 2 years, then it will start seeping through the joints, they are good on their warranty though btw.

I have the bakflip mx4. Love it. Do quite a bit of camping. I have a 20 foot travel trailer and use the bed of the truck for various items that I want to keep dry. Has worked out very well for me. Only down side is when it’s flipped all the way up to allow bigger items in bed back window is blocked but that’s what mirrors are for . No complaints here.

Thanks guys, I'm strongly considering the Bakflip MX4 unless something else comes up. I like how it goes +90 degrees and looks like the 3rd brake light can still be seen over it.

@Triton19X2, let me know what you think once you get it installed.

The Backflip CS is a good choice also because it will allow you to install a rack for your other stuff.

And the struts hold up, at Freeway speeds, with no issues.
Call around for price, it varies, negotiate it works:)

I have my bed frequently full. Tools, ladders, furniture...I'm always busy with the family, projects and work. This cover has been a blessing by keeping my tools and equipment secure while I'm in a store and still allowing me to quickly roll it back and haul equipment. It also looks very sleek and maintains a matte finish so it blends well with the truck. Retrax MX Pro

Thought about this thread today. My Grandma called me while I was at work and needed an emergency replacement of her water heater. I ordered it on my phone and was able to swing by Home Depot on my way home. Rolled back the cover, they dropped it in and I drove off. I really can't imagine a better cover, its so nice for anyone that constantly moves large items.
