Well, I was going to post in the Superpower thread that I have the uncanny ability to follow behind where other people royally screwed up (not that I don’t make mistakes).... there is a direct vent unit heater mounted below the roof. Can you spot all the problems with this... there are at least 4, more if you get really technical.050FE87A-44EC-40E5-A15F-1EBC3EA36DEC.jpg

1- I’m seeing single wall pipe, not double wall B-vent.

2 - WTF is up with that cap?

3 - Roofing screws with rubber gaskets in the pipe / cap. High temp rated?

4 - That roof boot / flashing with gooped on caulking (is it really latex caulk?) is amazing. We’re not venting a crapper here.

    holy crap!

at least it was in a metal roof... I guess is what they were thinking.

not sure what the hell they’re doing with that gray piece of “flashing”.!?.!?.!?.!?

In their defense, they did use a high temp pipe boot... incorrectly, but it is a high temp boot.

It appears to have been installed by the shop "Handyman" and not a HVAC tech. Give him an "A" for effort.

Looks like a section of plain old HVAC ducting and not proper exhaust piping. Eith way, with no support bracing that thing would bend in half with any decent gust of wind.

Good Job. The snow knocked down the original vent, the roof was about a year old and so the roofing company came out and "fixed it", no one checked the work. Fast forward a couple more years and the heater is actually needed. So now it's set up for taking combustion air from nowhere, because that rubber boot is covering over the air intake pipe that is cut at roof level. The gray metal flashing is half of the original flashing that used to fit around the concentric vent (air intake portion) that is no longer there. In it's place is:
    1. Duct pipe - not even single wall vent pipe.
    2. No storm Collar.
    3. Leak at the boot where the "vent" seam enters through it.
    4. Leak at the original screw holes in roof (hard to see in the pic unless you look close)
    5. Screws through the side of the vent - I guess that's ok since it is wrong anyway.
    6. Even if it was single wall vent pipe, it doesn't have 6" clearance to combustibles.
    7. Just looks bad overall.
    8. Should probably get some use as a plunger.

Nothing betting than extra water and CO2 in the building.

Remind me tomorrow to take a picture of the one whoever installed the garage heater in my house put on that one. I still haven't gotten around to fixing it.

    1) Not B vent or double wall vent, it’s gonna get ‘effin’ hot
    2) Storm collar. Lack of.
    3) It’s been screwed.A lot.
    4) Seams and flashing aren’t right. High temp boot or not...
    5) Hard to tell, but it looks like the top of the vent is still below the apex of the roof.
    6) Weird choice of yellow sealant where boot meets flue.

It takes more effort to eff that up than actually install it right.
