How does one prove that no stone chip or anything chipped my windshield? I believe my defrost did. As you can see it’s all right in the bottom black. One side is bleeding something.

What to say Toyota at fault here. And I’m pissed, just seen this tonight but seen smug marks since Sunday.

Is there an impact site visible?
Usually if a rock hits you will see where it hit and then the crack will spread from there

    That definitely sucks.
I would recommend biting the bullet and have the dealer investigate /replace it.
If your insurance covers windshields, don't have the insurance adjuster talk you out of OEM glass. Now that the Toyota safety sense camera is in the windshield, aftermarkets can have issues getting the correct camera alignment since the glass curvature can be slightly different. I had a volvo that we put aftermarket glass in, found out the curvature was so off, that the wipers contacted during function. had to call insurance and rip out a brand new windshield.

It would be difficult to prove that the crack was a manufacturing defect in the glass, however, i find it odd that there is a sharp zig-zag step in the crack.
Typical defrost cracks do not have an abrupt step in them.
There's no way your ditch mounts contact the glass with the hood open right? That would be an easy out for the dealership.

I do not put full windshield defrost settings on in the winter for this exact reason.
If the cabin is warmed, the glass will also warm (in a more uniformed method)
Definitely not as fast, but i will scrape the windshield over blasting it with heat.

It's possible to be a stress crack, but they are pretty rare.

Most of the time it can be traced to a rock chip, and then spreading out from there.
A closer pic of where the crack is "S" shaped might show where it originated.

Did you have the wiper blades changed recently? I've seen people slam the wipers down without the blades installed.

I’m blaming defrost and as you look the glass is burnt, wiper sits about 1/4”- 1/2” under burnt part. Look at the z in the glass too. No chips, ditch lights don’t hit windows either. I believe it’s a defective window element

Having used front and rear defrost on my vehicles (Toyota) for 4-5 months a year for 25y, I can't see it being defrost malfunction or related

I'm interested to hear what the dealer days, but I think you are going to be on the hook for the full repair/replace or go through insurance. I don't think the dealer will make up "excuses". They may seriously question it, as I don't recall ever seeing or hearing about defrost burning and breaking glass.

Maybe it's the pics, but I don't see burnt or evidence it's defrost related. Vandslism?

In the end, our opinions or thoughts won't matter though. So for your sake, I hope it's covered.

Do you have the cold weather package with the wiper heater? That is about where it is in the windshield.

I did this to myself when changing blades once on my old tundra, the arm slipped and it made the smallest nick that you could barely notice at first. Over the next few weeks it spread up and across the entire windshield, got worse whenever truck parked in the sun.

I don’t understand why there’s glue/tar like substance. Wiper is fine no marks. Also line straight and I’m questioning the z pattern it has. I’ll find out Saturday. Also no signs of stone chip. From pass side straight line to middle. Has a perfect hump the back to the heating are straight line until checkmate look on driver side.

On Crewmax trucks, the rear defrost button turns on the heater mirrors and the wiper warmer strip in the bottom of the windshield, if equipped with those options.

On doublecabs, it’s the heater mirror switch. I owned my ‘08 for a couple years not knowing I had the wiper warmer.

After a couple minutes you can easily feel the warmth with your hand.

    Yup.

Probably can't feel it if it's busted though... lol

Take it to the dealer, be cordial, and I have a feeling you will be pleasantly surprised with the resolution from the dealer. I have never taken a Toyota in and had a problem.

:monocle: I’m going to do some investigation because Saturday appointment. I want see if they are scratch marks. I didn’t want to touch anything because that area being sticky/and what appears to look like burn marks because of the brownish area in that stop. I had cracked windshields before but not like this. They spider after a while. This sucker is perfectly even. I don’t understand the z (ish) shape it left, and brown area. Looks like someone put a cigarette out and now going to have look for that whole that you pointed out.

Hopefully the has nothing to do with production because of this COVID-19 shit. Truck was born 7/2020. I know it she likes to bump in gear shifts especially downshift and from cold start to drive, sucker wants to launch. Learn to let her warm up a little before I start driving.

I appreciate your guy’s feedback. This is one I joined Tundras.com. Family, well at least for some.

I had a couple crack like that. Where they run across the entire windshield. Mine got hit but there wasn’t a chip yet a week later it cracked and ran when I turned on the defrost. Ive also had hits on the windshield trim that caused the glass to crack and run all the way across.

Based on the pics, I think yours has been hit somehow. Surprisingly, it doesn’t take much.

Maybe have the Safelight guys take a look and see what they say, just to gather info.

Like others have said, I doubt the dealer/manufacturer will cover but if you are nice, you might get lucky.

I had a 2012 F-150 with a very common problem similar to yours - the generation of F-150s had a problem with the rear defrost and the rear glass would shatter - yes shatter. In my case my rear defroster was just inop.

I’d go over your windshield with a microscope just to rule out any impact damage but it’s certainly not implausible to think your crack is due to a defect that materialized from the front defroster.

Glass does weird things....Before our Sequoia my wife had a 17' Chrysler Pacifica van. Driving down the highway at 60mph to work the passenger side front window just shattered for no reason. At the time i think she maybe had 5,000 miles on it (basically new) It took like 2 months to get the replacement glass from chrysler, but the dealership stepped up and gave us a loaner vehicle along with the fact we didn't pay a dime out of pocket.

Looks like an impact to me, especially after you cleaned it. Just make an insurance claim, most have a no deductible policy for windshields or waste your time going to the dealer.
