This is a a googled picture of my first car, same color as well!

I was 15 1/2 years old and even took my driving test and got my pink slip in it! It was around 1976 when I got it, I cut grass for the summer and paid $200.00 for it, it had more body rot from the hard winters outside Boston when I bought it. Though it was pretty rough looking, it was my everything at the time!

I was going through a crate full of old pictures at my mom’s house the other day and finally found a pic of my first car - 1977 Ford Mustang II. I got it for “free” after mowing my aunt’s lawn for the summer. It wasn’t running and needed about $900 and few weeks of work to get it road worthy. The 2.3L 4-banger was terrible and the original transmission was missing 2nd gear... was a fun first vehicle though and let me learn a lot about cars!

 

My 1st car was a '69 Pontiac Tempest with the 175 hp overhead cam straight 6, it looked just like this one. I paid $600.

 

Mine was a 73 Gran Torino with a 351 Cleveland engine. I purchased it for $900 when I was 15 after saving my paper route$ and $ from my part time job. Sat in the driveway for many months before I was able to get my license. Once I did, if I was awake it was likely I was in the car cruising!

 

Black 72 Super beetle. Looked just like this with the 4 pipes out the back. Had loud pipes on it which would often backfire when shifting down. It would shoot out blue flames about 6 feet long. Scared the shit out of dude who was riding a motorcycle and was crawling up my ass. Those blue flames flew out on both sides of him, causing him to swerve and then give me finger jester, telling me I was number 1. He probably had to change his shorts. Wouldn't dare do that today, end up getting shot.

 

I was very fortunate to have a very nice first car (for the time and my age).

A shit brown colored 1984 Ford Escort. I put chrome rims on it to try and make it look cool. What was I thinking?? (Not actual vehicle pictured below) Great memories though since my Granddad helped me work on it.

 

That looks like the '87 Golf that was my first car (and my first NEW car). Same color - Titian Red. Biggest piece of crap ever. It was in the shop 12 times in the first 16 months to fix everything from falling off trim and mirrors to a wiring harness (dash was lit up like a a Christmas tree). Traded it for an '88 4Runner and never looked back.

 

Wish we have kept the wife's 1st car. 1969 Camaro, brown with a white top. She had 3 older brothers so they fixed her up with glasspack mufflers and other mods. She was and still is the wild woman. Her meaning of having fun back then was drifting around the town square (New Oxford PA) clockwise! She ended up selling the car during the 80's gas crisis and the person that bought the car totaled it two weeks later.

 

69' F100, she didn't run very well but she gave me a solid foundation on how to work on vehicles.

I had a 1975 Ford Maverick. I paid $200 for it when I was 14 by working for the groundskeeping crew with the school district during the summer. It was ugly and I got passed by birds going up hill, but I had my own car when I got my license a year and a half later.

Mine was a great car! Drove it for about 5 years with now real issues. Right up until the cabin filling up with smoke from the electrical fire.

 

My first was a Chevy Celebrity Euro Sport. Had 264,000 miles when I got rid of it and still ran fine.

Speedo only worked intermittently when I bought it (which I didn't realise) - turns out that was a common failure on those cars
Got rear ended by a drunk driver one icy night. Glued the bumper back together then sold it to my brother cheap so he could work a summer job about 200 miles away from our home

First car I drove was my grandmas ‘76 Dodge Dart with the 318. That car would fly. Then while saving up to buy my own car, my dad let me drive his ‘73 Beetle. Loved that car and wish I had never sold it. First car I ever bought with my own money was a 94 Ford Ranger, regular cab 5 speed 4 cylinder. Worked at a hardware store as soon as I turned 15 to start saving and was able to buy it not long after I turned 16.

 

My dad had a 1984 S10 Jimmy. That was the vehicle that caused him to swear off domestics forever.

 

Calf shit yellow! Dad had the same truck, got questioned one time after taking out 4 wheeling why it had some scrapes and mud packed in fender corners. No idea What a blast

It was a different time.

 

When I was 16 I put $400 I had saved up down on the $2800 sticker price of a brand new, Biscayne Blue, '73 Volkswagen Super Beetle. My dad agreed to cosign the note for me with the caveat that I would make the monthly loan payments, pay the insurance and drive my younger sister to school. The VW Beetle perfectly suited my then surfing obsessed Florida lifestyle and the first things I installed was the obligatory 8-track stereo and a set of surfboard racks. My dad unexpectedly passed away shortly thereafter and the car then had even more sentimental value to me. I kept that bug for 33 years even though I had a succession of more expensive and capable vehicles along the way. I taught my daughter how to drive a stick in that car and when I asked her what car she wanted when she got her license at 16, she of course wanted the Beetle. My wife quickly vetoed that idea pointing out that it had only rudimentary seat belts, no airbags and just wasn't safe enough for her "baby girl". So my daughter ended up putting a down payment on a $23,000 loan that I cosigned for her on a brand new slate gray 2003 VW "new" Beetle Turbo S. She loved that car, gained a lot of street cred with the boys for driving a stick, and once competent was tasked to drive her younger brother to school as I had done so many years before. She ended up keeping it for 10 years until she traded up for another new German vehicle of her choosing. Funny how things work out sometimes...

 

That’s awesome man. My dad had a red 73 Beetle that I learned how to drive on. He told me if I can drive this, you can drive anything. I bought it from him and kept it a few years, but just couldn’t keep up with it since at the time I didn’t have a garage. Ended up selling it, which I still regret. Wish I just would’ve put it in storage.

 

Yeah, I loved that bug. You couldn't kill it and I never got stuck in the sugar sand or dunes on the way to my favorite surf spots. I really wanted to buy a VW bus but my parents said "no way" to that idea and I "settled" for the Suoer Beetle. I ended up selling it to a neighborhood kid for his first car and saw it motoring around for a few more years after that until he moved away. Still have a soft spot in my heart for the old VW's.

 

My father owned one, it replaced his '67 Toronado (my favorite) ... he loved big GM cars, then moved up to Lincoln Continentals before I persuaded him to try an Acura RL in 1998

The 98 had an economical 455 rocket engine, it was a great learners permit vehicle for me.

My dad had an appreciation for Toyota vehicles, here he is with his Cressida.
He also had an '84 Supra that we considered entering in the last Gumball Rally.
