This is a funny topic/thread for me. I have lived in Colorado my entire life and it never seizes to amaze me every year when I see people driving around looking through a 6”x6” square they scraped out right before driving that day. Is everyone in that big of a hurry that you can’t let your car warm up 10min before driving? All my vehicles have remote start but prior to that, I would walk outside, start it, lock it with the spare key and let it warm 10-20min. The only thing I invested in last year was a snow-brum to really knock the heavy stuff off once the defroster melted it.

The $300 it cost me to have remote start put in the tundra was worth every penny. I’ll never own a vehicle without remote start or a backup camera, even if I had to add them myself.

 

If you're looking for the ultimate cheap solution, you can try what my wife did one year for Christmas for our kids. She got two spray bottles and filled them with 2 parts 70% isopropyl alcohol and 1 part water. She may have put some dish soap in there as well, can't remember. But, the stuff definitely works on icy windshields. Now, with all this Covid crap going on, I don't know if you can find isopropyl alcohol at the moment, but if you can, its definitely worth a shot!

 

Prestone Ice Windshield Formula would work in the spray bottle.

 

This is EXACTLY what I used for years. A buck a bottle at the Dallah Store lasted for several winters. That's a cheap as it gets, unless you wanna just wait for the weather to improve...

 

Is this for comfort or just frost? If I had this problem I would consider getting one of those outlet thermostats ($20) and a ceramic space heater ($20) and a timer outlet ($15). I would toss the hole setup in the passenger floor and let it come on to about 80 degrees and about an hour before I left.

 

Or you could throw an XL tablecloth over your entire cab...front/back windshields and side windows. Kids today...if it don't plug in it won't work.

I'd think having a heat source in your cab for so long would be hard on the interior, dash, seats and console, especially leather.

 

I had an appointment this morning and I had to leave before the sunshine reached my windshield. 28 degrees and heavy frost. I started the truck, and poured warm water on the windshield. I watched the ice melt and then cycled the wipers, I poured water on what was left and hit the wipers one last time - done.

 

Yeah, I've heard that is possible but I've been using this method for decades on many different vehicles without a single incident.

 

Damn, must be nice to be able to sleep in until the sun comes up.

 

I'm usually up by 6 AM, but I almost never go anywhere before 10:00.

I carry a spray bottle with me in the car in winter. I scored points with the boss one day (when I was still employed) when we were leaving work and the windows iced up during the day, and everybody's scraping. Boss sees I'm not scraping. Sprayed his windshield with 'secret formula I invented,' clever lad that I was...

 

Sadly none of my trucks have remote start... yet

my wife really hates it when I point the keyless entry and tell her my remote start isn’t working since she’s still setting there .... do at your own risk
