Tuesday night I had the absolute viewing pleasure of playing with a Fluke Thermal Imager Ti20. It costs around $1,200.

It was really neat to be able to SEE the inhalation, and exhalation of people through their masks.

Anyways, if you want your area you're heating to be say 70°. You have to apply more heat than 70° initially to get your area warm. Say, 90°F. Your vent temp will always be hotter than your cabin temp. I think?

Not that I know anything, but why wouldn't a temp gun be a good measure of how well is it working?

Yeah those are great for surface temps, but your surface temps will be pretty close. Probe or bead probe type k thermocouple is the best for air temperatures.
Your not doing anything to scientific? You should be ok using that, just stay consistent how you use/measure your temps

That thermometer is going to measure the temperature of the plastic. Something like a candy thermometer with it's probe sticking into the vent will measure the temperature of the air blowing on the dangling probe.

If you can borrow that Fluke Imager @Tundra2 bring it home & find all the air leaks in your home. Great way to effectively button the house up for air leaks. I was amazed how much exterior air leaks into the house from inside walls door frames in the last house. Of course old school is to wait for a windy day & then walk around with a smoldering stick of incense - wind makes the smoke dance. Poor mans Fluke.

That would be amazing to see. I'm not sure that work would let me sign out such a high dollar item though.

Waiting for a windy day? Hell, I'll just bust out the leaf blower. We'll find em on a calm day. Incense galore. Meme was too funny not to share.

after driving my truck for another few days with the 4.56 gears, man does it make a difference. it really feels like a whole new truck. You guys should consider it if you aren't.

I was going to top off my coolant reservoir. The truck has Toyota coolant in it but I have a jug of Zerex. I know you aren't supposed to mix but it's only a few ounces. Any thoughts?

Basically, they said the 1Mk engine was as good as a new one. I wonder what the maintenance record looks like in terms of oil brand/type, fluids, etc.

Truck had to have had mostly highway miles to rack up a million in 9 years. Highway miles are good.

It's really impressive. I believe he always had it serviced at the dealer so one could probably find out what oil they used. I think another article mentioned only a few things ever went out on the truck like an alternator and normal things. The only abnormal repair was reverse failing but they were able to fix it without replacing the entire transmission. That's what I remember at least.

Curious if a re-gear with stock wheel/tire specs would help fuel mileage? Or would it be worth the time/trouble without larger tires because I'd need to recalibrate the speedo using the yell'r box in that thread by @Darkness

That's about all I remember also. Large dealerships usually have large tanks on the property for fluids so they buy in bulk. Chances are the dealership has changed brands from time to time because of cost savings.
I remember the owner was a hotshot driver for oil refinery companies and drives all over the country delivering parts. That's how he got to that mileage in about 10 years. Highway miles

I've been wondering the same thing.

Used this gear calculator to figure out the freeway rpm differences.
    http://www.car-videos.net/tools/speedrpm.asp

    Tire size 265/65r17 = 30.58"

    3.92 65mph @ 2075rpm (75 @ 2400, 80 @ 2550)
    4.10 65mph @ 2175rpm (75 @ 2500, 80 @ 2675)
    4.30 65mph @ 2275rpm (75 @ 2625, 80 @ 2800)

Going to 4.10's I probably wouldn't need to recalibrate, as it stands my speedo is 1mph slower than actual. So at 65mph it reads 64, but going to 4.10's it would read 66-67mph.

any smart people out there with coding or the know how regarding rotary encoders?
Little project. My spin bike has a resistance knob with a + and - but no readout. Just micro adjustments on it. I'd like to somehow attach a rotary encoder with a digital readout so I can see an actual value from like 1-100 or something???

My Speedo went from reading 10% lower than actual, to 10% higher than actual. It’s a total mind warp.

Gearing is on my to do list. The 4.10 would give you a nominal bump and I think that is the tow package gearing, not worth the investment. To hell with the speedo, recalibrate your mind and your good. Considering the age of our vehicles I would say $800 for a rebuild and gears (2wd). For that kinda $$ it better do something. 4.30 with stock tires would to be really fun and that would be a lot of performance for the money. 4.56 would effectively perform like a supercharged truck till about 60 mph but you would run out of legs real fast, bigger tires would correct that.

@Tundra2 your running a V6 so you would be able to out perform many vehicles with a proper re gear.

@Tundra2 I don't know if it would help or hurt fuel economy, I have a feeling it might help on city driving. Highway driving it could go either way, don't let the rpm count fool you that isn't true that higher rpm necessarily uses more fuel in these trucks. At least not for this scenario. The yellrbox works on 00-03 very well. 04 is a bastard year where one version is fairly easy and the other is kind of a pain. 05-06 are a no go.

I have always wanted to pick up some stock wheels and tires just to drive on for a weekend for fun.

@lsaami it feels funny when your speedo is wrong huh? Makes 0-60 times look better. Mine was around 8% off between the 4.56 and the 285 tires. Yellrbox would fix your speedo, you would want to ask them for a long harness. I forget how long because they go metric, I think 4 meters for 4x4. They don't charge extra for that.

This thread might help. With you having the V6 I'm not sure regearing is going to make it feel like it has more power(if that's your goal). MPG might increase a little but think of the cost to convert. It would take years to break even. You might be better off adding headers for more felt power. Hell, just covert it to 4x4 and stop worrying about MPG. Enjoy the truck.

    Oh really now?
95% of my driving is highway. 5% is backwoods paved roads. Rarely do I see "big city" traffic.
There is a LOT to consider here. I was thinking that if I could "feel" like I was getting more out of every drop of gas that would be cool, but you're right. It would take a LONG time for it to be worthwhile.

4WD conversion will probably happen, but not for a while.

Thanks for the link. I'll give it a quick browse.
