What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I replaced mine with Alcan leaf springs. Pricey, but I wanted to do this job one time, and be done with it.

Leaf springs also gave me 2 inches of lift at my request.

Brand new Alcan Springs leaf. 2 inch lift, +500/ or more??? Capacity, ride quality is smooth.

 

@Professional Hand Model when I left with meat in tow, even at colder/cooler temps(64 degree trans fluid) she shifted like a Gazelle!!! Smoove as butta!
And I kinda felt like she drove home even faster with the payload in the bed............






@Darkness it looks like the flange does have the appropriations for it to seal on my Vvti block(pumps bypassed)
Hopefully the oem gasket will seal to that surface well.

 

Got the downstreams off, finally. While it sat in garage for a few extra days I just hit it again with the torch and then cool water trying to get a reaction. Gave it another go with the breaker bar and POP tonight.

Then PHM told me to jack my truck and play with the rear end some more.

This is why I need a garage to do this stuff. Have to hide my shame. She’s sat a week now.

 

Don’t hide your shame, most people are ashamed they won’t work on their own modes of transport. I know for a fact, no more than two of my neighbors LOVE IT, when I work on my truck in the driveway. I’m still waiting on the verdict from the others......

 

It seems we’re good. It was for sure a case of the lugs not holding rotor totally tight and allowing for my brain to see a demon.

All lugs on and at a decent tightness and the visual issue was gone, however new rotor, caliper and pads and I do hear a little touching on the pads when spinning tire in air. Haven’t hit brakes yet though so don’t know if it will settle after initial use.

Will be another day though, Mr. Model peeped a half grease job on my drum install.

 

At least you will get things right the first time even though its taking some time. The truck will be like new again. You’ve taken on a big amount of work in one bite where some of us have taken the small approach. My brake job took about 1.5 days for the fronts and rears. The o2’s was a full day. Thats 2.5 days easy without breaks, but I started early and finished around 5pm working straight through without breaks.

Timing Belt was a three day job for me (which I did extras) and a professional shop said it was a two day job for them if they were to do it.

 

@Professional Hand Model you’re not wrong. I did bite off a bit in the last 7 days with work, a holiday and dog sitting.

Oil change, ATF drain/fill, O2 sensors, front brakes, rear brakes, oh and a positive diagnosis for covid.

I think it was right around $800 for the set. That's with the two inch lift, the extra capacity, and them bending u-bolts for me.

I was looking got pics of u-bolts but seems they are lost. I think I made a post about it on the lunchtable thread.

 

Where is everyone buying the aisin water pump kits from? Big gurll?

Popped the hood earlier to investigate a "chirp" at idle. There's a little green build up on my water pump like it's weeping at highway speeds.

Doesn't appear to be weeping at idle. Checked tension on the belts, and all felt/looked good.

Chirp is about once every three-five seconds at idle. No chirp at speed, but road noise may be drowning it out.

I suppose chirp could be because its cold here. Either way, I don't like to see dry coolant anywhere.

 

Ignore until it's warmer? They don't tend to just dump it all IME.
water pump = tensioners = serp. belt = timing belt cause you're there? = wait till it's warmer unless you notice the reservoir dropping. Carry a jug of 50/50 until spring.

 

I used RockAuto.com. I'm trying to limit my "BigGurl" purchases unless they are significantly cheaper or the only way to get something. We need to spread the $$$$ IMHO...one giant supplier for everything is a bad idea. RA is sometimes slightly more expensive factoring in shipping (fi you have Prime with Bigh Gurl), but their every day 5% discount pretty much covers that and their shipping speed in my experience is always faster than they say it will be. Thats what I did last time. When I slid off the road, and cracked my radiator. During troubleshooting, and head scratching I just kept a jug with me. Kept driving because at the time it was all I had to drive, and couldn't afford to have the truck down for any extended period of time. I was going through a gallon in 4-5 days.

I did the math one day, but don't remember specifics. In the two months that it puzzled me I think I spent close to $150 in 50/50 mix. Something like 12, or 13 gallons? Kept the truck going though.

Edit: gas station 50/50 mix is expensive. Working graveyard its hard to get into any big box store thats open when you get off work, and don't feel rushed.

 

Also, you have the wrong coolant in there...you need either Aisin Red or Zerex Redt...I prefer Aisin...

I know it's the wrong coolant. I planned on swapping over to Aisin Red, or at least asian vehicle mix on the next Water pump change. Weepage is right on schedule. Last water pump change was in the beginning of 2017. I average 30k miles a year at least.

I planned on doing a coolant flush similar to @Professional Hand Model. Am I hurting anything by using the green coolant? I hope not.

No, it won't but it did prompt me to look at RA's site. So far, here is what I've got picked out.



I'm open to any suggestions on anything else that I should replace. I'm estimating that by the time it's warmer, and I get to this job I'll be hovering around 340K miles.

The only pressure release is to push grease past the seal.
The clamp is a band-aid. The real fix is a new leaf pack.

I'm building a bastard pack with take-off Taco leaves. Probably not the 'right' way, but a cost-effective method for sure. Plus I can taylor it perfectly to my needs.

 

@Tundra2 add a fan bracket/pulley. Also, some radiator hoses (including those to throttle body) depending on condition. Obviously, your Alternator you discussed the other day.

 

Will do. Got a loooong laundry list of things adding up quickly. Alternator is already here, and on hand. Along with my new engine wiring harness. Planning on replacing that because the connector on the harness is damaged where it goes into the Alternator.

Can't unclip it from the Alternator. I tried several times when I was trouble shooting my wonky electrical issues from my projectors.

 

@Tundra2 throw in a throttle body gasket and consider seals if they are leaking at all. Since it's the 5VZE you might be able to get this kit off eBay. That's what I bought when I did my timing belt and what everyone recommended for the T4R.

 

I did the ATS HD leafs and was very happy with them. More solid and controlled, but not stiff at all. I did have a canopy on the truck so that added a bit of weight though.

 

After driving with the new ball joints, I am convinced I can turn sharper with the OEM ones. crazy!

 

Glad to hear someone here has them, probably what I'm going to do eventually. I've got a topper on there as well and only drive the truck for truck things, it always has some weight in the bed.

For today, I ordered a single replacement leaf from Donovan Spring, 20 minutes down the road. New U bolts, silencer pads for the whole pack, and a center pin 101 dollars. I have not settled of the final suspension plan for the truck, so I'm doing this repair cheap for now. Should be fun too, I'll post pictures.

 

@Voss Has Deavers and I think he custom ordered them to be a little stiffer than normal. Im sure Deavers could custom some that will be better for loads
