How hard do you drive your truck?

I’m never in a hurry. I did a lot of racing from about age 12 up through my college days. I’m over aggressive driving. Plus, driving like that just amplifies things that other morons do on the road that affect me. I Cadillac everywhere.

 

I’m in the over 40 crowd and drive a lot slower than I used too. Although with my 8” BA muffler I find myself punching it more off the line just to hear the sound

I’ve learned over the years watching idiots ram rod down the road that they get to the same place as me at the same time - but use a helluva lot more gas !!

 

I've ridden motorbikes for 40+ years. And, I learned long ago that the highway is not a race track. I've seen too many riders die young who didn't learn that lesson. Unpredictable things happen all of the time on the road, and we can't do much about that. But, driving more slowly at least gives a better chance of shaping the outcome.

And, I learned when I was 18 that driving a vehicle hard wore it out faster than necessary. Just doesn't work for me now to destroy something unnecessarily. When I was in college, I had a summer job working at a business that made cement products... brick, cinderblock and such. One of the wizened older drivers gave me a piece of advice that has stuck with me.... drive it like there is an egg between your foot and the pedals and your truck will last much longer and you will get there just as fast".

This. Half the people where I live are obsessed with being first to each red light (and the other half drive 20 under the speed limit even when conditions are ideal).

22 MILES per gallon?!?!? I don't see how you do that even topping out at 55 MPH! My wife says I drive like an old man, and even when trying to maximize MPGs I can only get about 18 with 100% highway driving.

I don't necessarily drive like this all the time though, and I can see the difference between tanks of gas.

 

I was getting 12.5 L/100 km in the summer when the only place I was driving was out to our lake lot every weekend. That's according to the DIC and confirmed with hand calculations at the gas station. Speed limit either 100 or 110 km/hr (60 or 65 mph) most of the way.

Now in city only driving, best I can do is about 18 L/100 km (16 mpg) and in the winter with lots of idling that can drop to 9 mpg (25 L/100 km).

 

Too many tickets as a kid. Vowed no more. I try to keep it at or below the speed limit. If I’m late, then I’m late.

 

^This! My speedster days ended several years back when I got two tickets by the same cop in the same spot in less than 3 months apart...no more I said!

I knock the carbon out getting on highways whenever possible. Around town I cruise.

I drive mine like a grandma. It's going to see enough wear and tear simply from the places we take it, there is no need to add additional by driving fast.

 

I'm not hard on it at all really. I beat the crap out of my cars years ago. My wife says I drive like an old man.

 

Old man/once and a while. I have the 8” BA muffler and PC and it's perfect for me.

 

This is what I'm interested in doing. Same setup. Are you happy with the muffler? Any regrets that you should've gone with the 6"? I'm about ready to buy the PC too.

 

Yes, I like my setup. It's not annoying or obnoxious. I have had this set up for about a year now and no regrets. I'm still playing around with the PC, right now I have it on sport +3.

I give my cars an Italian tuneup a couple times a year but that’s it. I learned at the tender old age of 19 that speeding really doesn’t get me anywhere that much quicker for short drives. At least not enough to risk a several hundred dollar ticket. If I’m on a long drive that’s 8+ hours sure, I bump the speed up, but a small 10 mile commute won’t save me jack switching from 70 to 80 mph. I’ve also learned that if you’re driving something you actually enjoy you won’t be in as much of a hurry to get out.

Man... I went on a road trip today to do a hike. Went to Red Mountain open space which is just north of Fort Collins, CO, and just south of the Wyoming border. On the last 2.5 miles, we were on a washboard dirt road. I visually saw my dash moving independent of the whole truck. Makes me question the install of the dash and many other things. I've always been pro Toyota and Tundra, but what I saw rattled me. My 15 year old son was astonished by the dash vibration and asked why it would do that. Me: I don't know. Concerning. Also, after that road, I have rattles that I have never heard before. My truck is a city truck for the most part. Take it off road and some weird $hit starts. We'll see what the end result is, but it isn't looking too good at this point. In response to this thread, I don't drive it hard at all. When I hit a rough road, $hit went ugly. Also lost SiriusXM after the vibrations from the wash board road. Still doesn't work. And, that was at a whopping 20mph on the road.

 

I do a lot of 9 hr trips across the state.

this is a lot of highway miles.

but getting on freeway in west Texas is a blood sport.

im on the loud pedal good and hard frequently.

 

I drive the piss out of my truck. Full throttle alot of the time, having fun enjoying the truck. All in the country of course, no one else around. Got her pretty muddy today riding some washed out hunting camp roads and service roads. Had a ton of fun and hit plenty of huge potholes that got me slightly airborne, good thing the dogs weren't with me! If something breaks yall will be the first to know. 206k and running great!

 

Hopefully, you changed out those OEM Bridgestone tires, lol. I can't drive over 10 mph on a gravel road with my Bridgestone H/L's. I was used to my OR Tacoma and thought WTF, I would be better off using our Lexus ES350 to go off-road over the Tundra.

Moral of the story: if you want to off-road the Tundra, make sure you have the right tires and run them at the right pressure. And stay away from narrow trails.
