Interesting video from the plant in Texas :oldglory:
Fun fact: it takes 20.5 hours to assemble a Tundra

I was there at the factory last year and wanted to do the factory tour, but unfortunately I could not; you have to sign up the day before and I did not know that, and was not sure how my schedule was going to work out anyway. It would be great to see it in person. Maybe next time!

Check the build link in my signature.
That's cool. Now I know why it has 2 miles on it when it shows up at the dealer...

I always chuckle when the guy driving a truck with 75% of parts coming from Mexico, asks me, why I’m driving a Japanese truck.

Love that everyone has a professional look. Unlike other "American" truck factories where they wear tank tops and Ozzy Osborne t-shirts with yesterday's lunch on the front.

haha and I’m sure it goes beyond the look, hence the quality perceived to be always tied to the Toyota name no matter where the particular model is made.
One major thing I’ve noticed when visiting Japan is how much attention to detail and respect they have for anything. It’s great to see they can implement those same traits throughout their companies abroad.

    ME TOO!

The crazy thing is there is so much vehicle specific engineering in the automation alone. Some of it may be adjustable, but a lot of the fixturing for part holding/storage (the rack with all the dashboards) is all made for a specific part. The robots can be programmed for different positions, but there is so much that goes into part holding etc. that people never think about. It really isn't hard to see why cars cost as much as they do. Granted there are still a lot of dealership BS charges added on.

Here's a link I think I was sent in an e-mail from Toyota. Some lame marketing stuff in it, but some cool stuff nonetheless https://tourtoyota.com/#/tmmtxvr

I always assumed the trucks were painted by machine throughout the entire process. Interesting to see workers spraying as well... Now which one is responsible for all the orange peel?:monocle:;)

    Not nearly enough room here!
I've had to set a few friends straight because of their "I only know what I ASSume" attitudes. One GM fanboi told me he'd never buy a "ferrin" built vehicle," as he climbed into his new Buick Envision; built in CHINA:D. Working 30 years for a well known defense contractor and while I can't elaborate, I can say with all certainty, the US doesn't have a better ally than Japan.

An under appreciated aspect of tundra is the sheet metal . A lot of trucks use composite bed covers.

I also liked the andon cord in the video. This is a unique aspect to Toyota and manufacturing.

There is a steel mill about an hour north of Mobile. I know a few of the engineers that work there. One told me that they make the sheet metal for several auto manufacturers, but they hate dealing with Toyota the most. Toyota has the tightest specs and highest standards for their steel. While most manufacturers do visual and micrometer checks, Toyota is the only manufacturer that requires random microscopic checks of the steel to make sure it is defect-free. He didn't know when he told me this that I was truck shopping. Toyota really does care about their quality on the important stuff.
