Im sure there's already threads about this but I dont care! So tomorrow im going to por15 my rear axle cover to prevent leakage as its rusted bad but hasn't leaked yet. Any tips on using por 15? I bought 1 pint, and my rear axle housing has residual grease on it from grease applications from me a few months ago. Should I use engine degreaser on it or brake parts cleaner? Thanks

I used brake cleaner, painted the cover, put a coat of Gasket sealer over the area, then painted the area again.

As already stated, definitely remove the grease. Also scrape flaky rust but leave the "non flaky" rust. The POR won't adhere to clean metal.

brake cleaner, wire brush to remove all the crud you can, then brake cleaner again and use the por15. After the por15 is fully dry I suggest you top coat it with a good "rust" paint of your choice. por 15 can react with light and discolor and it is always a good idea to top coat it with paint to help cover and protect everything.

What's an example of one of these rust paints? Also how many coats of por15 should I do ?

follow the por15 instructions, probably couple coats will do. Any paint like rustoleum or other spray can paint that is decent quality.

Make sure you do a light sanding and clean-up again after the por-15 is cured and before you finish spray it. Por-15 comes out quite an impenetrable layer that won’t let anything stick to it including more paint ;)

Does anyone think spraying fluid film over the por15 is a good idea?

I didn't use POR15, but I did coat the frame with FF after all my work was done. I used Chassis Saver, which does not require a top coat.

Cool, that is a similar product.. so you sprayed fluid film over the chassis saver? I just want to make sure that it wouldn't be trapping moisture in doing the opposite of what I want to happen

No, you won't have to worry about trapping moisture. I sprayed right on top of the Chassis Saver. If I'm feeling up to it later in the week, I think I'll hit the box section of my frame again. I have a half a can left, so I might as well use it up.
If you don't have a spray hose adapter, look on Amazon and purchase one. It's basically a 20 inch hose with a brass nozzle on the end that replaces the nozzle that comes on the can. Great for getting inside frame areas.

I don’t know what size can you purchased but I’ve done my whole chassis in 2 coats of POR-15. Trick is to only take out 1/2 pint at a time and seal back up the larger can with Saran Wrap under the lid to get an airtight seal.

The directions say a minimum of 2 coats. In my experience, that's absolutely correct. 1 coat does not fully seal. I would do at least 3, probably 4. The directions also say for best results appy additional coats when the surface is slightly tacky. Additional coats can be applied after letting it fully cure, but you have to scuff it before re-coating.

I'm about to have the rear diff on my 2005 RCLB repaired using this:
    Rear Diff.jpg

Then I'm going to use this stuff on the entire axle assembly and then por15 everything. The Ospho work great, I've used it on spots here and there.

Also, don't get any Por15 on the lid of the can, you will have a hard time opening it again. Stuffs like glue. Obviously if you are going to use the whole pint, it's a moot point. I used my pint twice, and almost didn't get it open again. Transferred to a new container after that without contaminating the lid.

I was going to mention chassis saver. From my reading of 15, its truly a multi step product that takes some time. No real experience with it, though. I hand scraped and sanded then blasted with rust reformer and rustoleum, greased a couple weeks later. I should have done differently but too many things to do before winter. Good luck OP, am curious to see what you do.

Report back on how that works. I've used Ospho, and I've used POR-15, but I've never used them together. I'd be interested to know how it works.
