I ha e an 06 Double Cab SR5 Tundra me and the wife bought this spring it just hit the 170k mark. Anyways I’m wondering what campers you would recommend we could get that won’t destroy the truck, I know one downfall of this truck is the towing capacity but outside that I love it. We are wanting to get a camper for or 4 member family clan the kids are young so we don’t need anything huge right away. What would you recommend?

I pull a 23 ft trip bunk that sleeps 7. IT'S about 5300 dry and it does pretty well.

I have an 05 DC SR5 4.7 L 2WD with 155,000 miles. Just my wife and me, no kids. Our camper (Bullet Crossfire 1900RD) weighs around 3400 lbs dry but I suppose I'm pulling/hauling 4,200 lbs on our trips. Camper is single axle so nervous about blowouts and take good care of my tires (correct pressure and max speed of 65). We've camped a lot in Southeast and pulled a lot of hills. Our first few trips averaged around 8 mpg but getting mid 9's now by staying around 65. I play with the overdrive button on long, slight downhills to keep rpms low. Easy to stay at 65 on flat to rolling hills but long, 5 or 6% grades will drop you to 40-45 mph unless you stomp on it and downshift. I used the towing rule of thumb of 80% of towing capacity and decided on a load no more than 5,300 lbs. I love the Tundra but the mpg sucks. Decided that reliability was more important than mpg and reliability is great. My only concern about your case would be 2 kids = longer/heavier camper with bunks and more stuff to haul. You may find yourself frustrated in the mountains by lousy mpg and slow progress. BUT...camping with kids is a great way for kids to grow up. You'll have lots of fun when you get there. Good luck.

You mention the towing capacity, so I presume you know about that. Frankly, that's the easiest part of the equation. The more difficult part is determining what you want/need in a camper.
How far do you intend to travel with it? Just to a local campground, or are you planning a tour of all the national parks?
When do you plan to use it? Just in the summer, 3 seasons, year round?
What's your expectation for comfort? Are you and your family looking to unplug, slow down and "rough it", or do you want to have all the amenities of home?
Your answers to these and many other questions will determine the camper that's right for you.
