I want to continue the mild to intermediate off-roading and camping adventures in my Tundra that I took my growing family on in my old 4Runner.

I’m going for performance over look/stance. Here’s my goal:
    • 2-2.5” lift front AND rear (I want to keep at least most of the rake) with MORE travel.
    • I want something to eat up washboard roads, unmaintained forest service roads, mild crawling (there are some hairy washouts and off camber situations that we have to go through to get to a couple of spots where we like to dispersed camp).
    • I am undecided between 295/70r18 and 285/75r18 tires. Leaning toward the taller/skinnier 285/75s.
    • I want to keep my stock wheels and UCAs, and I want to avoid a CMC.
    • I’d love to keep it as close to $3k as possible.

I’ve seen some people post about mid-travel kits in the $3k price range, but the more I search the forum for “mid travel”, the less I am sure what it actually is.

I have considered Fox 2.5s front and rear and the OME BP-51 system. But it seems I’d still need to add something (shackles, AAL, new leaf pack, airbags) to the rear to keep my rake and keep from squatting when towing/hauling.

    Thanks in advance!

    • King, Fox and Icon coilovers will lift your truck 2.5" without problem, there's usually two options with these shocks, stock and extended travel. Many E-tailers can valve shocks before delivery, so talk to at least one of them before pulling the trigger. (Filthy Motorsports, AccuTune)
    • For the back, I'd go with Icon's RTX or Deaver springs, shackles will have to be replaced to match your needs.
    • I dont think 0.4" will make a difference between the two. Though I cant say tires won't rub on the UCA or body mount.
    • You will not get more travel without UCA's or new leaf springs.
Get this kit if you want it all in a single shot:

I am pretty much set on getting the IronMan4x4 PRO kit constant load and will be adding JBA upper control arms with it just to keep it well within spec. I need the constant load option for my setup. The other option is the Performance option.

They make a couple of cheaper kits also but I want the PRO. It just seems like a very well designed, durable suspension, with minimal maintenance, and pretty good all around performance. About $2800 for everything (including UCA's) with the coil-overs prebuilt.

No affiliation but I did have an IronMan4x4 kit on my '89 Landcruiser which I sold. They make good stuff similar to ARB if not slightly better than ARB. YMMV.

Read the overview and see if this is an option you may like.

Thanks for the info. Are you saying I need aftermarket UCAs to take advantage of the extended travel the 2.5” lift kits offer that you mentioned above?

Yes... the aftermarket UCA allow you to move more into the "mid range" travel area, whereas the stock ones would limit the movement. Obviously the coilovers are needed as well.

They also help with getting your alignment back to stock specs.

Yeah, I loved the JBAs I put on my 4Runner. It totally makes sense what @C.I. was saying...I need the extra room to take advantage of any extra travel.

Is the OM BP-51 kit considered mid travel?

I haven't been able to find any information on OME's regarding extended travel. They do get a lot of praise though.

i just thought I’d throw that out there.

I have zero first hand experience with their Tundra kits.....however the wife has their stage 3 on her 4Runner. Alignment came out great after install.

I keep telling myself I’m just going to keep this Tundra stock and then another one of these threads pops up. And I’m back to looking at lifts again. Ironman stays in the top running with me because they are like 5 miles from my house and the 4Runner seems to be doing good. It’s only been on a few months.

It would work but you would need to buy some wheel spacers...... then you could keep your stock wheels

Spacers are cheaper than wheels, so not a bad idea.

So the extended wheel travel that aftermarket UCAs allow for makes them also not work with 285/75s or 295/70s on stock wheels because of the stock wheels’ offset?

Guess I’ll be looking at wheels now too! :spending:

I have extended travel ads shocks with MCM UCA on stock rock warrior wheels with no issues. Also what is weird on the camburg link is that adding a rear shock adds travel and articulation. That seems impossible without new leaf pack.

I believe the shock tops out before the spring. The last time I unbolted a rear shock, the axle dropped more. If you were to add a longer shock, the spring would be allowed to flex more.

Interesting! Same offset as TRD Off Road wheels?

Edit: found this info: “Rock Warrior rims are 17x8 with a +50 offset, so that makes the BS about 6.4" Other stock wheels are 8" wide with a +60 offset, 6.8" BS.”
