Muffler replacement

I’ve read a lot of threads on here, but I want to know if anyone out there has changed just the muffler only and how does it sound, I know everyone is going to recommend the guy who makes the bolt on exhaust on here but I want to know if anyone has had success with just a muffler. I have a 14 tundra.

 

I decided to keep the single exhaust setup this time around. Got a nice FlowMaster knock off for $26. Sounds great. Not annoying. No drone.

 

Flowsound muffler: dual 2.25" inlets with single 3" outlet. Perfect. Popular with Jeepers. Found out about the Flowsound on a Jeep forum actually. Not a glass pack. A very great Flowmaster knock off, except Flowmaster doesn't make this size so actually not a knock off

 

I have read on here that you need 2.5 Inlets lol but if yours is 2.25 and it fits

 

Fit perfect. Lined right up. Took less than 30 minutes to get it welded up! Only had to add a 2" extension. Quite pleased. No need to spend hundreds of dollars to keep your single exhaust setup that sounds great

How loud is it do you have a clip

 

No clip. Phone clips never do justice anyways. Not too loud at all until you get on it. Sounds great at idle. Not overbearing. No low end torque loss either. Stock muffler simply doesn't cut it.

You make a pretty convincing case, Matt. I think, with my newfound welding skills, I'm gonna have to give this a try. And for $28, this is one mod I don't even need to tell the wife about until she hears me pulling in the driveway

 

Just measured my pipes. Sure enough, 2.25" inlets, 3" outlet that quickly reduces to 2.75". Has anyone else tried this muffler?

 

Changing just the muffler is good for changing sound, but replacing just the muffler will not increase power and it may actually decrease your engines performance.

I researched this topic for about a year before I had Keith at @dirtydeeds fabricate a custom muffler system for my RCSB, the Y-pipe and using the correct diameter pipe along with the original tail pipe delivered to sound I wanted and the power gains I was looking for.

 

Yep, a low cost setup. As you can see the Flowsound is not a glass pack. The cutout section shows the internals. It's not a straight thru design. I certainly have no loss of power, the opposite actually. Low end torque is quite fine. Sometimes less is more. Try it you will like it. If you don't....you only have $28 into it and elbow grease.

 

What would be the effect of dumping the tail pipe just in front of where it turns up to go over the rear axle? Seems like it would be just as easy as welding in a short extension. Something like this...

 

How do you know that do you have a dyno? And maybe some people like power in the high end rather then the low end. I’m not a engineer or expert but I build my own cars no matter what exhaust is on my tundra you are not going to see significant gains if your motor is stock and if you have a intake, your motor is still stock lol just looking to see what people have installed for a deeper tone, I might just experiment myself and try different ones since I can weld and cut and install myself

My truck came with some jank pile of shit that wasn't supported correctly, and eventually one of the outlets off the muffler fell off and essentially did what you have drawn. It made it way louder in the cab since the exhaust noise was kind of contained underneath the truck. Personally I wouldn't recommend it regardless if you like a loud truck, because it's really just louder for you and not anyone else.

 

What if nobody in the general public cares/wants to hear your truck? This mod is perfect.

 

Do you have a dyno... can I borrow it?

It's common knowledge that these engines are good for an extra 3 to 10 peak hp with no loss in low end torque when you replace the restrictive factory muffler and continue using the stock tail pipe... you can extract a little more power if you also add a less restrictive filter element like the AFE drop in dry filter.

 

I ran this configuration for almost a year, it was a little louder and produce a raspy sounds at high rpms. It also robbed me of some low end torque off the line power... the BAMuffler system I have now solved those problems and it sounds sweet.

I did a magnaflow replacement muffler. Very quiet + drone. I now have a DD 6 and am very happy

 

I ordered DD system today after much research.

 

I got impatient and welded this up a couple days ago. Probably should have waited until i got the inlet pipes off the truck, because I'm going to have to take it all down and clean up the welds on the tops of the pipes on a table. But, it's functional. Sounds pretty good, I think. Definitely has an aggressive tone when I get on it but is pretty quiet otherwise. For $40 and a few hours of work, I'm pretty happy. Could never quite pull the trigger on a DD or TRD system, so much $$$

 

Which muffler is that?

 

It's the one Matt @Black Wolf linked in post #9 of this thread. I just painted it black with high heat grill paint lol cuz as he indicated, it's not stainless, and I don't want it to rust away anytime soon.

 

Mine sounds pretty good at idle too. Not loud but a nice low rumble sound.

 

I tried recording a clip, but as you mentioned, they just don't give an accurate representation of the sound. I had my wife drive it last night when she took our son to football practice so I could hear it pull away. It is pretty much the exact sound I wanted. It's a low rumble at idle, but accelerating at 2,500-3k rpms it's perfect. Not obnoxious, but obviously louder than stock with a tone that's appropriate for a big truck.

 

Yeah, I took a chance and ended up quite pleased. Exactly the sound I hoped it would be. Glad I stumbled across that forgotten Jeep forum that had a thread about these. I'll try to find it again. I might have bookmarked it.

 

I just got a flow master super 44 I’m going to have it welded in sometime next week I’m going to run 3 inch mandrel bent piping over the axle, I will keep you guys updated

 

I got a Flowmaster super 44 installed with 3 inch mandrel bent pipe over the axle with a 4 inch tip and it sounds good to me I very happy with the sound. It’s deep and not excessively loud but you have definitely hear it especially when you get on it
