Love this truck. I have a concern that since there is no mechanical connection for the accelerator. Basically a servo/motor circuit (Accelerator Position Sensor/Throttle Position Sensor) that an electrical failure could cause an unintended acceleration problem. Are there any preventative measure to prevent this?

I understood some of those words. I have a supercharger on my Tundra and also have an acceleration problem, or at least my wife calls it a "problem".

Did some more research turns out Toyota has been in court several times over this Non-issue, an won every time. It appears any failure of the system in the Toyota results in a MIL lamp and limp mode which will get you home safely. Plenty of granulated engineers, Toyota's and others swear to it. I suspect that you're acceleration "problem" has to do with a heavy foot. The only time that is really a problem is if the results are "getting stuck", getting ticketed or not keeping the shiny side up. Fast is fun! later - jw

Pretty much all cars / trucks on the road produced this decade uses a throttle by wire setup. The only proven "unintended acceleration" cases have been related to floor mat position. Throttle by wire is a safe setup.

There are two redundant, opposing sensors built into both the accelerator position sensor and the throttle position sensor. If at any point the PCM detects an anomaly in either the TPS or APP voltage sweeps, the system goes into limp mode and usually won't allow more than 25% throttle. The system is extremely safe and arguably much more reliable than a cable setup that is also prone to failure. I had a throttle cable stick on an ATV one time; was not a fun day.

From what I recall Toyota and likely others make the cars now so that if this were to somehow happen a full brake application will stop the vehicle no matter what.

That would be extremely dangerous; particularly on the highway. The system from day one has been designed safely and no other redundancies are necessary.

Except the OP has a 00 and I think is asking specifically about that truck.

Every electronically controlled throttle has the redundancy built in. Regardless of age.

I think what @greengs is saying is that if the throttle does hang, the driver full on braking will bring it to a stop. In almost all vehicles the brakes can out perform the engine.

If the OP has a 00, then it's not throttle by wire, correct? Traditional cable in 00 models I believe.

When my taco had the recall work done for this, I remember there was an ECU flash that killed the throttle if brakes were applied and throttle was over a certain threshold for a period of time.

I was furious about the way they neutered the gas pedal and tried to take my rubber floor mats.

I would suggest as already been stated. I was always taught if you have unintended acceleration,
    1. drop the gear into Neutral,
    2. pull the mat/rug back toward you, or remove it completely
    3. pull the accelerator pedal toward you with the tip of your foot/toes/shoe/boot/sandals.
    4. In a safe parked position on the side of road you can inspect the throttle wire and check if its jammed, damaged, or caught on something.
    5. if you can't resolve it at that point and time, then it should be towed either home or a repair shop...

I have an unhealthy fear of shark attacks. So I don't drive over bridges. If I were you I wouldn't shift out of P. Safety first.

Throttle by wire has been in use for decades, there are hundreds of millions of cars and trucks on the road today with this technology. Every time you drive or fly you put your life in the hands of a computer. It’s very safe and very reliable.

I have never seen a shark on a bridge, if I did I wouldn't stop! Safety in the overall scheme of things is not that important, Accidents are gods way of cleaning the gene pool.

my truck’s throttle body will lock up occasionally, causing it to got into limp mode. Just takes a shutoff and pump the throttle a few times and it frees up. Only happens about once every other month, so I’ve been to lazy to try swap over my parts TB.

Thanks all for replies; Only had this Tundra a couple of months. Fixed/updated rear brakes and replaced left rear wheel bearing and seal (without any special tools). Toyota is not only reliable, it's easy to work on, best vehicle on the road. UA was my last concern. Between this blog and Toyota information that concern is laid to rest. When I was a kid I favored Dodge (mostly for their motors, trannies and rear ends were always junk), over time I developed a dislike for Ford (Found On Road Dead) or as seen in the rear view mirror (Driver Returns on Foot). I developed a fondness for Chevies up to the mid 90's their probably still OK). Now at 65 (older and wiser) I am definitely a Toyota fan. I own 2 Camry's, old but still running strong.

D2440286-CF41-4CD1-9B8A-D76078ABB346.pngThis is what I got when I googled what happened to me that day. I don’t think it has to do with the floor mat or anything else. I believed its the electrical or electronic malfunction did it coz I can’t control anything when it ran on a higher speed.
