@FirstGenVol that was going to be my next move!

Luckily, I believe I fixed the noise. As anticipated it wasn't anything too exciting.

Jacked up the truck yesterday and started banging both sides with a mallet. I was getting the noise only on the rear drivers side, as I had thought. I took the wheel and lightly rotated it and sure enough replicated the noise. There is that small rotational play you get between the pinion gear and ring gear... but the play on the drivers side was about 3x the amount on the passenger side. I thought I had a bad axle or possibly bearing. Just then I realized that the play was between the WHEEL itself and the drum. Odd. It was almost like the wheels were not being properly secured by the lugs, or something.

And just by chance, I had picked up some stock wheels and bought some new 285/75r16's so I threw on one new wheel back there to see if the same play/clunk would happen. Sure enough, it secured up perfectly and the visible play between the wheel and drum itself was non existent.

Drove it around the neighborhood a few times and sure enough no more annoying constant rattle that sounded like the truck was going to fall apart. So that's good. It was something to do with the aftermarket Pro-Comp wheels and ET lug nuts not being secured properly.

Anyways, here's some pics of 285s on the stock alloys. Yep, I need wheel spacers to clear the A-arms properly when turning... pic below is when tires are straight ahead... I can drive it for now but when I turn out of a parking spot it will rub.

Hmm maybe a tire shop can hook you up with the correct lug nut to hold those other wheels down correctly.

The magic of OEM wheels combo’d with 285/75/r16. A perfect match for our early 1st Gens.

Nice truck, love the white 1st gens! Glad you got it sorted out.

PS, those stock wheels are so clean, too! I'm so jealous of you California guys, it's insane what the climate/salt in the Northeast does to vehicles.

I determined that my rattle comes from the bell crank levers...the small ones on the backside of the brake backing plate. As they adjusted to spec I'm not going to do anything about it.

I need help diagnosing my rattle, I tried the things in this thread and still no luck, is it possible the noise could be coming from the shock itself?

It sounds alot like the bypass valve rattle, move your camera to the shock and see if it gets louder. I live in the desert, all the offroad prerunner types make that sound out here.
