Howdy - I have a 2017 Crewmax 8 cylinder 4x4. I hear a 'whining' sound when I accelerate coming from the rear-end. It is really evident if I have the window down and no radio.
This is my first 4x4 truck (have had jeeps in the past) and I wonder if this is 'normal' of if i should have it checked out. I haven't serviced the differential yet b/c I don't use 4x4 regularly.
    Any thoughts?

How many miles? Has it ever been opened up? I'm curious because I have a 17 that I regeared and have a slight whine as well as a handful of others that used the same brand gears on their Toyota 10.5" rears BUT none of us were listening for any noises before the regear so we don't know what a normal noise level is.

36K, never cracked it open. Based on your experience, it sounds like it may be a normal sound.

Might want to change the fluid and check for metal shavings. This will ensure yours is at the correct level too. Look at the breather valve and axle seals for leaks. It’s easy to do and will only be the cost of oil and about an hour of your time.

I noticed my 18 doing something similar the other day. But I only notice mine when I running 57-58 mph and accelerating. I thought maybe it was a rear wheel bearing whining/howling but it seems to go away when I let off the gas.

Yup, mine does the same, but it also makes that noise after a gear down on deceleration. I don't think it's something that requires immediate attention if theres no grinding/skipping or towing; certainly don't ignore, you're under warranty so it's an easy claim.

Oof yeah that's a bad one to sound, take that in. The YouTube comments say they replaced the carrier and its fixed. Wonder what actually went wrong on the assembly.

Do it. No need trying to self diagnose. The rear end is not an easy place to work in. Once you pop the cover off, it’s just a big mess of gears and fluid.

I sometimes get a whine on acceleration, but it only happens when its really really cold overnight and for the first few miles down the road.
