Hey, guys, I plan to run the track / rack system like this on the trunk (see pix). This requires rivets into the sheet metal. My question is would it be ok that I rivets through the plastic trim (where my finger pointing) and into the sheet metal and sandwich them all together (if that makes sense)? What do you think?

Also, is there wiring underneath this plastic trim piece? How do I take it off to take a look? Thanks guys.43095.jpg

@jptshadow I would think initially it would be fine but over time the plastic would wear out around the rivet. This may or may not cause a problem down the road.

I did the same thing with my truck. I am using rhino rack track system. I did buy longer aluminum rivets at home depot. It is pretty solid after is it secured. I don't carry heavy loads on top of it. Most weight I've put on top of it are two mtb

Hey, bud, would you mind sharing some pictures of your set up?
Was there any wiring underneath the plastic trims? I don't want to drill/rivet through any.
Also, which size of the rivet did you get from home depot?

    Thank you so much, man!

There is no wiring underneath. I drilled through both the plastic cap and the sheet metal. I figured if I need to remove the track I can replace the plastic cap and cover the holes. 20200822_104150.jpg

I don't remember the size of the rivets. I took the hardware to home depot and purchased the next largest size.

This company sells different types of rivets. That might also work
