Getting ready for road trip tomorrow

Back to the road trip topic...we made a giant loop a few years ago. Going to Devil's Tower too?

Glad you're going to see Crazy Horse. It's enormous and impressive. Hope that they can complete it in this decade. All privately funded.

Those are lifts and loaders on the right edge for scale and a few people in that tunnel.

 

Yup, all good. I guess this topic can get heated and I didn't consider the implications to the question. I don't want to see the OP's thread derailed.

 

Hey guys it’s Day 6: the day got off to a rocky start this morning. There is Smoke in the air from the fires out west and Hanging in the air in Rapid City. I woke up to some breathing issues and a Massive headache. Took my inhaler and some aspirin and marched on. We drove all over the Blackhills and stoped in Deadwood for a late lunch on Main Street, at one of the local eateries, honestly I can’t remember. Even for the shoulder season it was quite busy. Then drove up the hill to Lead saw the giant open mine pit. Drove through town then headed to Custer state park for the night. Book a room at the State Game Lodge, booked a Historical twin room. Bad idea...... the room was Sooooo small and I couldn’t sit on the toilet. It was wedged in between the wall and shower. So talked to the sweet lady who checked us in and got moved to one of the Hotel rooms. Much better about the same as a motel 8.
During our drives we covered about 40 miles of dirt roads some were forest service road most were in great shape but one got a little hairy but the Tundra didn’t even strain. Saw lots of deer, a few sheep and some buffalo in the park. We were setting outside tonight enjoying the cool crisp air and watched several mule deer graze right in front of us, had four bucks come out and two put on a small show for the girls. My wife was shocked she had never seen bucks fight, even if it was just a pushing match. We had a great dinner at the lodge and now enjoying my bed, giving an update.
Tomorrow we are going to explore the park and maybe Rushmore, Crazyhorse if time permits, if not tomorrow then definitely Friday.

 

Too bad about the smoke. It also all the way up in southern British Columbia and Alberta. We were in Banff last night and could barely see the mountains. They forecasting that it should clear by Friday even in the Badlands area.

 

On to day 7: what a Great day. Got up early had a great breakfast at the lodge and hit the road. Drove all over the park and can say the road up to Needles was one of my favorite drives ever. We couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. We stopped in at Sylvan Lake, it was Crazy packed. From there we went into Custer for an early dinner at a really crappy Mexican restaurant, definitely not the Tex-mex I’m use to. Then we headed to Rushmore and crazyhorse.
Tomorrow we Getting up really early and aiming the Tundra towards Houston, Saying Goodbye to South Dakota.

 

Did you fold in your mirrors when you went through the tunnel?

 

Yes we had to. Saw several marks of those who didn’t and this was the Wider of the tunnels. The second one you had to line up to get a straight shot at it or you’d scrape your right side. I took video of it so no pics.

 

Day 8: we drove 13 hours to OKC for the night. Not much to tell expect that 6112/5160 are the best mod I’ve ever made to a vehicle I’ve owned. That’s the suspension Toyota should put on Every Tundra!!!! They soak up the road so good, I had the truck up to 50 mph on wash-board roads and the shocks soaked up every bit of it.
I’ll do a recap on Sunday after I get settled at home.

2 years ago..! The size of this has to be seen in person! Pictures do it little justice!

 

Recap: well we made it home last night (Saturday) around 2100. We started our day in OKC stopped in Fairfield for lunch with a friend and then headed home. min total we drove 3,552.6 miles and have no idea till the discovery bill posts how much in gas, honesty I don’t care.....
The Tundra did Great, it ate up the miles and miles and asked for more. I hear some people complain about the smaller fuel tanks but it was just right for us, after around 300 miles I’m needing to get out and stretch and get the blood flowing. I can say that installing the 6112/5160 made the trip much more enjoyable. I had no idea how bad the old shocks were. We only had one major issue, last year I had a chunk of tire hit my hood bulge and wedge itself into the bulge. Well I haven’t replaced it yet and it had several broken clips. Well we had a Terrible cross wind going across Nebraska on I-80, the wind was picked it up and rattling so bad. We stoped in York and I ended Gorilla taping it down to the hood. I know bad idea but it was driving my wife nuts, she was thinking it was about to fly off. Well I pulled the tape off this morning and it left lots of Sticky all over the hood. So what’s a good goo remover that will not damage the paint?
This is one trip we both Needed to get back to being Us. I am so glad it went a good as it did and look forward to next years trip.

 

I have always had success using a product called Goo Be Gone or Goof Off. I have got a chrome hood bulge that is like new that you can have, I just know that shipping will probably not be conducive to this offer.

Racing Rubber Remover. I've used it for years to get off rubber streaks from track days on my GT4. It's harsh on paint, so you'll need to wash it afterwards, but it gets off just about any gunk.
