Rough idle in drive only.

Not sure if this is worthy of a thread. I have an 01 v8 that is shaking and stumbling it seems, and it only happens in drive stopped at a red light. And when I take my pedal off the brake, it'll inch forward as usual but it will feel a little crippled if you know what I mean. Truck drives and shifts fine aside from that. Anyone have any ideas? I'm gonna check and prob replace the plugs cause of how easy that is. Could this be a transmission issue? I doubt it but I hope not. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Sometimes my truck with feel like it stumbles at idle barely, but not enough to cause concern, but now this is causing concern. Thanks.

 

Remove Ignition Coils and Inspect/Meter Test during spark plug change.

How many miles on truck?

 

Clean the TB

 

In addition to that, make sure that TB is clean, and check your vacuum hoses for slight leaks.

 

That job will send Pucks into Phase 4 Panic Attack.

He’ll start hearing noises and seeing Boogie Men from under the truck.

Yeah. Cleaning that TB will help. Hoping thats the simple fix as its at idle only.

 

136,000 miles on the truck. No check engine light. Plugs changes 5k ago. 2 new coils 4k ago from preventative maintenance

@theblurry1 just did his and could feel a big difference. Use Throttle Body Cleaner only! And a micro fiber towel. If its really gunky you might need your brothers tooth brush.

Clean the MAF and TB first.

 

Right on. The really thick TB gunk I cleaned off didn't remove easily with the cleaner, I had to press the microfiber towel down to remove. It was intense taking out the whole throttle body to clean the back too, but my Tundra runs better, has more throttle response, and literally sounds cooler when starting up now.

Since now I'm addicted to making her run better, new spark plugs should be arriving soon. It's been about 30K miles. Went with the Denso iridiums.

You're right, but I believe iridiums are a newer technology and they last longer. The difference between the two is likely not that noticeable and I already bought the parts, so.

 

Those are the ones I have now. Those are the two sets that I’ve been swapping. Bought them as they were spec’d and cheap at around $2 each when I bought them from autostore. Rated for 20k miles.

I’ll switch to the TT Iridiums when these wear out. Looked at the price and they are $7+/- each, but rated for 100k miles with better technology. Would love to hear a review on these when blurry gets them in.

 

I had a set of plugs that were iridiums that my truck didn't like. Switched back to coppers and it ran like a dream.

 

Good feedback. My truck really likes these Coppers right now. Waiting for feedback. Which brand Iridiums and were they the twin tip?

 

Check your codes again and see if you’ve got a transient warning about temperature sensor error. Or just spend the ~$10 and simply replace it. If the sensor is faulting the engine can idle rough.

Just something else that can cause a rough idle.

 

Check inside the frame rail right beneath the driver's door for an external fuel filter. If it has one you might need to replace it.

 

They were dual electrode Bosch or NGK I believe. Truck acted like the gap was wrong. I checked them and they measured OK, but idle wasn't as smooth and some times it would stumble trying to start. Swapped back for OEM coppers and back to normal.

 

Thanks. I had some Iridium long life single tips put in by others in the engine before going to these coppers. I did notice the engine felt smoother but attributed it to new plugs. The old Iridiums weren’t in bad shape. I want to hear @theblurry1 feedback and I’ll figure it out from there.

 

Will do sir! Waiting on that socket tool to arrive tomorrow so I don't have any more happy accidents. I'll let y'all know how it feels, iridiums are what's already in there, though.

 

On my tundra, I cannot explain the difference of the way it runs after doing that job.
Took around an hour on my 5VZFE and it's an entirely different truck.
The Throttle return spring is still toast though.
