^ see those little star patterned bolts @Professional Hand Model ? Bet you'll find at least one missing or stripped because they used the wrong tool.

Do you recommend going with the NGK iridium?

Good thing because if you didn’t, that would have deducted 1 Feather Duster from your score.

From Studies, I think the truck @empty_lord pictured is VVTi?

All the earlier gens do not have that thingy on the Cam Gears unless I skipped over a video removal of that part stuck on the Cam Gears with the star bolts. There will be something missing I’m sure and I’ll be on here bitching about it. :annoyed::rofl:

I’ve been using two sets of NGK Copper OEM Spec lately. Swapping them every 5k miles to inspect engine health. They run about $2.50-3 a plug even from autostores.

Next set in a year or two, I’ll be using the Denso TT Iridiums. They are $$$.

According to @bmf4069 I need to check my cam journals for proper health, but thats kinda hard.

To answer your question, I look at the spark plug tips. Since taking over my maintenance, I’ve noticed my plugs not as oily with all the newer parts installed (ignition coils, injectors, synthetic oil, etc). I think the biggest plug improvement was after doing the o2 Sensors swap (all 4).

I’ve only done 4 total plugs swaps so I’m still building a record. From readings, the o2 makes the best improvement in plugs. This is all assuming you do not have other problems like antifreeze in your oil. Check out an internet search on Spark Plug Health. Here is some info from the Gas Gurrls.

I tried that too, and it didn't work well for me.

I think the type of plastic is weird. The glue never wanted to bond. Maybe yours will be better.

Goofy XM Radio Installers must have mangled mine back in 2003. They tacked on with some tacky clay type stuff. Didn’t realize their mangling until last year when replacing the bulb (did mine still in place through the ash tray). Ended up taking off that broken black trim and it looks fine without it. Not necessary unless you want it.

I retraced the steps to properly unmount it. This is a serious puzzle contraption. "Do you want to play a game?"

    1. Take out ashtray. Remove two screws that retain the ashtray bracket.
    2. Carefully pull down on ash tray bracket, which will be held back by lamp cable.
    3. Firmly push the plastic ash tray lamp connector to the side, like you will break it. It will actually pop out gracefully.
    4. You will now have access to back of lighter socket to the left. There is a black ringed shell that can be popped back with a nudge of a screwdriver. Push it back, out of the way. If you haven't turned off the car, do so now. You don't want to waste blowing a perfectly fine fuse.
    5. Using a screwdriver, you will nudge off the wire connector. It's shaped like an L. There is a small wedge that bridges the inside corner of the L. Use a screwdriver wedge it and back it off the lighter socket.
    6. Reach inside and rotate the lamp connector with fingers and pull off. If your goal is to change the bulb, you can stop here.
    7. To remove the socket from the dash, you will need to nudge out the inner metal sleeve (towards the cabin). In order to do that, you will see two L shaped openings inside the socket. There are small plastic tabs a the short part of the L (closest to cabin), use a small screwdriver to depress them a little, while you use your other hand to push out the socket from the back. Rock back and forth. Alternate pushing on the white tabs with the screwdriver. It will eventually push out.
    8. The white ring is left behind. There are two inside tabs that keep the ring from popping out, one at 12 o'clock, the other at 6 o'clock positions. Gently use a screwdriver and pry the 6 o'clock position from the front. Don't force too hard, or you end up cracking the black trim. Just pop out the bottom rim, a bit over 1/4".
    9. This is the tricky part. You will need to rotate the ring 180 degrees so that the 12 o'clock tab is position at 6 o'clock. Then try to push this out by hand from the back. You'll need to carefully angle out the white ring, as the lamp socket in the back will try and get in the way.

To re-install, go backwards from the last step.

Ahh, you are right. It's like bakelite plastic, which is heat resistant, like the ashtray plastic. Gonna try PB epoxy.

Once I saw the video of a guy doing the 180° on the bulb socket I knew I could do it in place without removal and/or worse breakage. Lots of important wires running in through that juncture that affect other systems. High Risk Zone.

Took me three tries until seeing the video and then it all clicked. 1 hours job tops after 3 fails (3-4hours in fails total).

Regarding the ash tray lamp, do you guys also remove the green lens on the bracket if you are going to choose a white color?

    Just smash it out?
