AC Evaporator Leak! Replacement a tough task?

What's up everybody?

I've been noticing a strong, bitter, burnt plasticky odor in my 2005 Sequoia in the mornings. I mentioned this to my tech and he said it sounds like I have a leaking evaporator which sits inside the cabin behind the dash. Sure enough, after having my AC serviced and blowing ice cold I've noticed a slight drop in AC temperature performance.

Is this a tough task to perform? I have yet to go get my airbag recall done and am wondering if they could replace the evap while they're in there.

Not a job for the inexperienced. I'm sure they can replace it and properly evac the system, but why wasn't it caught at the time of servicing?

 

Not sure why it wasn't. This problem began to occur about a month after AC recharge.... I'm assuming all is needed is the evap correct? I noticed a water leak under the center of the truck. My truck has rear AC.

 

I'd ask the shop if they did a pressure leak test--they should have. It's possible that a newly pressurized AC system could cause a leak in a weak spot like the evaporator.
