After the auction - new to me tundra

Opposite directions is open diff. So no permanent style locker in there. Likely culprits for your issues are the transmission, the rear end, or that RTV'd up transfer case. Bad U-joints will not cause your symptoms. Wheels locking up while driving are likely not drum brake failure. Sudden locking up of rear wheels would seem most likely to be rear end or possibly transfer case. My money is on the rear end being the issue based on the symptoms you're describing. Gotta pull that third member and inspect.

Here is how you figure out what other wheels/tires will fit your 2001. If you are looking at Toyota OEM wheels, your rig came with ET15 originally (offset is the ET number, convert 15mm to Inches). What wheels did you buy for $200? Got a pic?

 

Ok so instead of opening the diff I just took the rear axle to a shop to have them go over it. For $80 they'll let me know how much its gonna cost me. The little channel around the magnet on the drain plug was full of crud and the fluid seemed to leave a few metal bits in the drain pan.


The wheels were/are 2016 tacoma trd sport wheels:




The lift needs 4.75" backspacing or less and these are 5.43" if I recall correctly. I'll put em on eBay and keep using the ones the truck came with for now.

I did find 16" tires off craigslist from someone that upgraded their 2020 tacoma so I'm good on those for now. Just the goodyear all terrains. I don't think I need MTs yet.

 

Those are great looking wheels. You could run them with some spacers. Sorry to hear about the rear axle, but all signs point to trouble there. I wouldn't tackle the axle rebuild myself, the nuts and bolts of removing and installing would be ok, but shimming and setting lash I would leave to the trained professionals. Let us know what they find out. If it's big $$$ you may consider pulling one from another vehicle vs repairing yours.

I mean the red button is just icing.

I "need" the

- tailgate
- rear bumper
- driver door
- right fender
- passenger tail light
- windshield
- driver side roof gutter thingy
- maybe the back seat isn't terrible
- maybe the radio because the current one doesn't fit
- maybe some of the running gear depending on mileage

all for the auction winning bid + 17% for the auction place + a tow to my house + a tow to the scrap yard afterwards.

And none of that is important if getting it to be a safe driver is costly.

There's a number where it makes sense and its likely less than the number that makes sense for a picknpull or established junkyard.

 

It probably wouldn't hurt. Then, after getting what you need, you could continue to part it out for the forum. Very few people on here with parts trucks.

 

OK so i did not get the parts truck. I bid $600 and it went fro $1200. I was working during the auction and missed it. But it was white anyway. I'd like to find a green one so I don't convince myself I need to paint the off color body parts.

I did get the rear axle back. They said there was a not worrying amount of pitting on the spider gears and one wheel bearing was a disaster and the other was bad, so they replaced both bearings on each side and the seals. And cleaned everything up, then installed the backing plates on the wrong side. So I'm headed back to them Tuesday for them to sort that out.

I did find this sweet baby on the driver side when checking out the front brakes:



and discovered that the rear brake hose may be clogged. No fluid at the rear drum bleeders but a normal amount at the load sensing valve.

And I got the winch mount straightened out for $40 by taking it apart and the bent pieces to a local fab shop.



And got one of those hot glue dent puller kits off Amazon so will see what thats like someday soon.

I have a third set that I tried but they ran into the calipers up front. I'm trying to not buy spacers if I can help it. I'm not opposed to using them but don't want to spend the $ because there are likely other happy surprises I haven't found yet.

 

You can also use suction devices to pop dents, forego the glue. Go to YouTube and search for dildo dent removal and you'll find examples. Alternately, use DuckDuckGo for a search engine in private browsing mode to search those three words in succession if it's not something you want to be tracked as having searched. The process is absurdly easy and apparently devices which see a lot of vigorous play tend to have the best suction.

OK so a month later .....

I swapped the master cylinder, bed, rear bumper, doors, right fender, interior (everything but the headliner and dash). If anyone is looking for parts let me know. I can't post yet to the marketplace.

And am waiting on a front bumper that is stuck in fedex limbo. Evidently the contractors they use to unload trucks are understaffed and behind.

 

Nice! Is the chrome on the Side mirrors a cap, or is it the housing? Id be interested in the mirrors either way....

Oh I kept those on the doors I swapped. But! The mirrors on the "old" doors are in great shape and have the turn signal lights in them, but no chrome. If you want those let me know.

 

I'm really stumped by that brake rotor! How did that happen?

 

I'm guessing the wheel came off at some point and that rotor slid down the road a ways.

 

Wheel Spacers busted off and and wheel rotor dragged on the pavement. Happened to a member here last year.

The hub did have a broken wheel stud.

Oh sorry. Yes. Here is some pics.

new fender, headlight, turn indicator. Doors, topper, bed from parts truck:






This side is all parts truck. Except for the headlight. And the grille is new. A cheap one from ebay. It looks like crap up close (the round edges arent really and the chrome film doesnt have clean edges) so if you want a nice one don't get the cheap $50 from ebay.





It needs paint on the hood and cab roof at least. Its not rusty yet but the clear is gone in some big areas. And touch up in some scratches, and compounding and waxing everywhere. But the body is straight-ish. Mostly.

I got it out driving around today for the first time in a few weeks. I've replaced the 02 sensors to clear codes P0141 and P0161 and also the coolant temp sending unit to fix code P0128. Still need to get it through emissions. But still waiting on Fedex to deliver the bumper they've had in town for 8 days now.

Today I got a new windshield installed. A prior owner noticed a leak and gobbed silicone or some sealant all over the top windshield trim and the driver side drip channel. The windshield install guy pointed out that it was a lot of rust and treated it before putting in the windshield. But it didn't look like swiss cheese yet. More like an ugly rusty coating. But at least now it'll be water tight. I hope. Time will tell I guess.

The topper I got off the parts truck seems to be leaking water in the back corners. Not sure what thats about. Its a Century brand so I'll check with the dealer when I try to get a replacement key.

I'm kind of hoping I can find someone that needs a drivetrain to take if off my hands. I have the salvage title and it runs and drives, but the radiator doesn't hold water and it needs some serious frame fixing in front of the lower front suspension cross member. 194k miles on it. And seems in good running order other than the crashed up bits, and how I've mistreated it taking all the goodies.

If you have the room for it, I'd keep it around. You may need more than you think off of there.

 

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut some days. Also I'm terrible at/hate paint prep so its soo much cheaper for me to sit and wait on the right color part.

 

What happened to the wheels on the donor truck from the auction site? Those method wheels are sweet!

Build is coming along great! I love seeing these things come back to life.

 

What colour is the interior and where are you located....

 

Its cloth + tan and I'm in Portland OR.
