Anyone running 17" rims on your 2.5 gen?

Thanks. Bilstein 6112s; 1.9 on drivers side; 1.3 on passengers side (started off with 1.3 on both sides, got it aligned and had a noticeable lean- that's when I made the decision to adjust the drivers side to 1.9 vs putting shims on- she is level now and I have experienced zero issues. Bilstein 5160s rear at stock height.
As far as rubbing- Ditched little air damn from flaps; trimmed front wheel well liners and moved fwd; rubs mud flap but just a little plastic not the mount- I am letting it rub.
Goal was to find the sweet spot and not change geometry, lose too much low end torque... I shoot with Keith Carty- he's a buddy and really helped me dial the front in with the settings and all. I purchased CB shackles (+2), 3 shims, diff drop and carrier bearing kit but did not need.

If I currently have Bilstein 6112s on top setting up front and CB shackles and icon shocks in the rear to level it out and 18 inch SCS wheels on Cooper AT3 XLTs in 285/75R18s and have no rub or anything, am I wrong to think that the Icon wheels in a 17 inch wheel (both SCS and Icon are +25 offset) on the new Toyo ATIII 35x11.5 will work also with no issues either?

So basically swap from an 18 inch wheel to a 17 inch wheel but keep very close tire sizes. What am I missing?

 

295/70R17s. Icon wheels w 25 offset. Couldn't be happier. NOTE: Truck is new to me and I'm pretty sure my alignment is screwed. That rear wheel looks like it has positive camber. Pretty sure the amount of tire poking out at the top will be less when I get a proper alignment next week.

I have,
Roughly a 2.75" lift up front (maybe touch more)
Camburg arms
Rock warriors
.....and a good alignment.

No cab mount chop.
Flaps removed.

Aside from minor lift, proper wheel offset - a good alignment is key to not have to do a cab mount chop.

 

Yes sir! Sure is clean. Just making a few changes to better suit what I'll be doing with it.

Yep I just stumbled across them today and think it’ll be my next set too. Just need to decide between the -12 or +1 options. Will wrap them in 315/70/ nokian hakkapelitta LT3

I'll probably go with the +1. I'm at +9 now and its perfect...unless I decide ill want glass fenders so the -12 would be the better option.

I saw a quick blurb saying when tundra owners put on 17” rims that the calipers are so big that the rims need special weights to balance. Anyone know about these special weights?

 

No special weights. Just be a little careful where they put them. Can’t stack two weights ontop of eachother

 

Hello Everyone!

Sorry to butt in and ask a question here. I have a 2019 Tundra CrewMax Limited with stock tires and rims. I'm wanting to put the largest tire size WITHOUT a lift or level and I don't mind slight trimming. I'm reading that 295/70/R18 or 285/50/R18 are good picks.

My question to you is: how can you get a tire company to put on these larger tires that will fit with minor trimming but their computers are saying the largest tire for my Tundra is the stock 275/65/R18? I don't have a garage set up or buddies who own shops to do it for me. Thanks in advance for your help!

 

I’m running 17’s / 285/70 - I wanted to go with the 285/75 but had rubbing at full turn. I’m still dealing with a little rub but nothing some minor modding can’t fix

 

17" 312's wrapped with Toyo OC AT3 285/70. Rubs a bit on the front liner in reverse. Easily fixable. Don't pay attention to how filthy she is. Wheels showed up just after a crazy storm went through. Parts of town still without power 15 days later.

 

They will try to talk you out of it but if you are willing to deal with potential rubbing and remedy yourself tell them what you want and they will install. Search the forum, you will usually find answers to know if your desired outcome is achievable.

 

Very interesting- this is my third post ever here. Just bought a new 2020 Tundra TRD PRO. I'm trying to understand what are the practical reasons, if any, in going with the 17" wheels over my stock 18" wheels? Then what size tire gives me the highest lift and taller sidewalls (vs my stock P275/65R18s) without needing to trim, add spacers or modify the truck for now. The truck comes with a 2" lift already. I would want to add snow chains when ice/snow/mud which likely take up space and needs to be a consideration.

While I will be buying new front and rear bumpers, they're on backorder for 12+ week and I want new tires before then.

From reading the 16 pages here, it sounds like the 17" wheels and various tire sizes can provide a better cushion and more potential traction? than stock if airing down. It also sounds like the 285/70/R17s might be a good option, but I need someone with experience to answer this?

Here's my 17" story...
Started out this morning going to a nearby America's Tire to pick up some Method MR305 NV wheels
Website said they had (4) 18"x9" in stock for my truck (already had 275-70-18 BFGs on my stock steel wheels so just upgrading wheels).
Get to the store and website was incorrect (they have the wheels but they are the wrong bolt pattern)
On the website it shows there is another store 1 hour away with (4) 18"x9" Method MR309 GRID wheels
Screw it, Ive been wanting wheels so I make the drive.
Get to that store, they have the wheels.
They go ahead and take my wheels and tires off the truck and dismount the tires from the stock wheels (so far so good).
As I'm walking around the strip mall I get a phone call from the shop...
The website was incorrect and the wheels are 17"x8.5" (bolt pattern on the website was incorrect) so they can't mount my 18" tires on them.
I did some quick research (mostly on this site) and at this point I had invested so much time I said screw it and made a deal to trade in the 18" BFGs and get new 17" BFGs.

The end result - Method MR309 GRID wheels (dark grey) and 275-70-17 BFGs.
Truck "seems to ride better"
Minor rubbing at full turn (I just have a leveling kit up front)
The tires stick out a little further past the fenders than I would have liked (1 1/4" in the rear have not measured the front) but looks good.

Sorry for the long post but I read all 16 pages of this thread and got some great info so I thought I would contribute.

 

Yes, more sidewall gives more cushion, so to speak. Toyota’s “stock” Baja race truck didn’t use the Pro’s 18” wheels (which in my opinion look great, by the way). It went with the 17” Rock Warrior wheels used with some of the older 2nd generation Tundras. Also, you can air it down a bit more and not lose a bead compared to one with a bigger diameter wheel and lower profile tire.

In my case, I don’t off-road as much as I’d like, and the few times I do, I stick to easy trails. But it’s nice to know I can air it down a bit more if needed with 17” wheels/tires.

With that said, the main reason I went with 17” wheels is cost. When I was looking at tires, the 17” ones were considerably less than comparable 18” tires. I haven’t priced them out lately, but if they’re still that much cheaper, then my 17” wheels should pay for themselves the next time I buy a whole new set (factoring in the sale of my old 18” wheel/tire combo).

All in all, though, the Pro 18” wheels are great in my opinion. Very strong, look great, and with the greater positive OEM offset, you should be able to clear without rubbing 295/70/18s with the stock Pro suspension, which is 2” higher in the front than non-Pro Tundras. That was actually the setup I originally wanted using Pro 18” wheels, but at the time the cost was too much for my liking.

 

Does anyone know if we are able to run the 17” 4runner wheels on our truck? I see the TRD wheels popping up for sale all the time, people are practically giving them away I would rather be running a 17” wheel
