Can anyone talk me out of buying a new 3rd gen?

With a 3rd child on the way I need to retire the 2014 Double Cab. As much as I want to wait for the 4th gen my gut tells me to just go ahead and buy a new or slightly used Platinum CM and piss on the 4th gen. About the time I will need another truck there will be another generation out.

What do y’all think? Get a truck now or hold out?

 

If you want a v8, buy one now. If the v8 is not important to you and you can wait, see what the new Tundra is like. You can always buy a used 3rd gen if you don’t fancy the new trucks.

Likely not. Most reports have been consistent in the new tundra getting a Lexus-derived turbo v6

 

Don’t get third gen. Thery’re not known for reliability. None of us like ours.

 

How long do you usually keep your vehicles?

 

The value of the 3rd gens will drop when the new trucks hit the market, so you could save some money by waiting. You could either get the 4th gen or a remaining new 3rd gen (or slightly used) if you can wait that long. But the 4th gens will hit the dealer lots in maybe 12-14 months and last I checked babies don't simmer for that long.

If your timing was better, I'd say wait. If you need a crew max before the baby seat has to be installed, then you're timing is different.

 

The CM is not worth the move. I would keep the DC. CM features have been going down hill since 2014. The back seat floor of the 3rd gen CM will piss you off something fierce when trying to buckle kids in. Same width so nothing is gained in the dimension that matters.

 

I will tell you....don't look for a newer year used one...they are priced higher than a brand new one. The prices are high in the market right now, so I would wait a little while if you can. FWIW, I have a 10, 14, and 17 yr old and they all fit fine in the back of my 2013 Double Cab. Congrats to you and the wife on the baby!!

 

I have a teenager. The double cab is not very comfortable with the whole fam on road trips. It’s cramped as fuck.

Historically I’ve kept my trucks until they start having issues. Usually 130-150k. I made the switch to Toyota because I want more life out of my vehicles

I have the money collecting dust for a new truck. A 2020 pro or platinum sure does tickle my pickle

They fit fine no problem around town. But road trips are tight. We just did a 2k trip and it was cramped. I’m 100% set on a crewmax

I have noticed a price difference around the 17’ to 18’ models. The beginning of July was a completely different market then right now

 

I just bought a 2020 Double cab because my 4th baby boy is on the way. I got to drive a CrewMax for 6 weeks and decided that the extra leg room for my kids (oldest is 7) isn't worth the shorter bed. I've now got 3 car seats across the back seat and we fit fine. Teenagers might be a different story though.

Anyways, I was on the fence about waiting for the next gen, but deals on new Tundras are really good right now, and they probably won't be offering such good deals on the next gen trucks when the are released. Also, with COVID still very much a problem, I wouldn't be surprised if release dates get pushed back and inventory is low for the first year or so. Waiting for the 4th gen truck might be longer than we think.

 

I have to say, I am very happy with my 2018 CM. Nothing about it frustrates me.

I get the bonuses of LED headlights, the big gas tank, and 18 was the last model year with a transmission cooler. I’ll add a head unit that allows Apple car play in the future.

The next gen will be new, with all the untested newness that can be exhilarating but also risky.

 

panicman brings up a good point about a new model. Both my sister and aunt bought new Suburbans the first model year they were released in 2015. Both of them had them in the shop all the time. I'm not saying the 2021 Tundra will be full of problems, but their is a real benefit to buying a vehicle and the end of its generation when a lot of the bugs have been fixed.

 

2021 will be just like the 2020s. The all new ones won't be until 2022.

 

When I bought my 2020 in July, the salesman said this was the last year for the V-8. More than likely a hybrid in 2021.

Sitting at the toyota dealership right now, 3 tundras on the lot... all double cabs. Drove through another dealers lot yesterday, zero tundras on the lot (my sister in law is suv shopping)

 

The baby will be small for a couple of years. If they all fit with the car seat, wait to see what’s coming in 2022. If it’s what you want, wait for it. If not, there’ll be used 20s by then.

 

I’m not so sure the value of the 3rd gens will drop when the new ones hit the lot. If they have no v8 option, I think the 3rd gens may actually go up.

 

I'm really hoping for a Hybrid in 2021.

FWIW, when I bought my Platinum last month, my salesman is pretty confident there will be a V8 option in the next generation. Probably not the 5.7, but he heard there will be anV8...

 

I'm pulling the trigger now. $3,000 cash rebate on 2020 models. Wouldn't mind a 2021 but those probably won't hit for a couple more months and I'm sure there won't be any rebates on them. No change from the 2020 so the only plus would be a one year newer model, which I don't think means much if no changes. So in short, buy a 2020.

 

Maybe locally in some markets, but only short term. On a whole the 3rd gens will drop some value. Not chit-the-bed like Fords or GMs, but that's just the way the market works. Plus, Toyota seems to be really good at controlling inventory.

But if mine holds its value longer...I'll be happy!

 

Hello. So I will give my opinion as someone that has 3 young children and new double cab. I have noticed a lot of people mention that the double cab does not offer a lot of space for kids or even adults. I am not sure I completely agree with this. I think the space is fine for everyday use even with kids or adults. A lot of people use the truck for long trips and vacations, I’m not sure I would ever take any truck that I own on vacation with my family unless I need to tow something. I recently had a newer crew cab tundra also, I honestly prefer the double cab. We recently purchased a new Toyota Sienna as a family/vacation vehicle, we also have a suv that seats 8. I guess my point is that each vehicle has a purpose, I can’t imagine taking a truck on a long vacation over our minivan or suv. My thought is keep the double cab and if possible purchase a vehicle that accommodates the family for those long trips. Good luck and congrats.
