What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I might try one on an Android but I have a few spare Ipads too and would rather go with one of those.......maybe.

All of my Tablets were once Remote Controls for Automation Systems,most of which are IOS but were free too!

Looking forward to seeing your results,I have been meaning to get this going for too long myself.

I already have a Scan Gauge and Ultra Gauge but a Tablet has other advantages I imagine that I can realize.

 

Yeah. Some of the the other guys have done very nice set ups with the OBD stuff. I’m dizzy from both cleaning this used phone up and setting up the Torque Pro. Need a break to digest it all.

 

Helped a fellow Toyota owner get out of a situation. Drove his 2wd truck down a “road” and got stuck trying to turn around. Got him unstuck, turned around and dragged him back up to the main road. Fun ending to a great weekend of camping.

I totally agree with you 100% on every aspect. I think Mexico is a better source of outsourcing since it is right next to us, the country can only improve with more commerce and trade, and ultimately will end up being a better neighbor to the USA with more opportunity. They live next door, why shovel more money to the commies when we can stimulate a beautiful country full of hard working people. As well, we can regulate the production more so than China. We need to GTFO of China and let them do their own thing on their own!

That channel is fantastic. I'm amazed at some of the situations he's gotten out of and how much that little Jeep can pull. He's also extremely humble.

Very humble and respectful. Those Yankum ropes are no joke!

 

Got a few chunks taken out from rocks but holding up very well. They will last a while and I’m totally fine with that. I like the size and traction. Do get a little loud after 3k miles but rotation takes care of that. They were a bitch to balance though!

Didn’t know where to post this but wanted to share how safe our 1st gen tundras are. Local news stated that this truck fled from police and rolled over 3-4 time going at 100+ mph.

I put in some travel time this weekend on a major North/South artery and can say I’ve never seen so many abandoned single cars pulled to the side of the road. Most of them looked partially wrecked and majorly abused as if they were stolen and left once they ran out of gas?

 

I know it's been discussed but I can't remember the answer. Did we find out if there is a way to get steering wheel audio controls for those of us with older 1st gens? If I added one of these steering wheels I'm curious what else I would need to do. This is the ONLY feature I wish my truck had.

 

If you ever find the PID for the torque converter temperature reading please share it. I've only been able to get the pan reading.

If you're reading this reply, you'll probably want to check out THIS POST because it covers a lot of the "how" to update steering controls.

There are a gaggle of threads out there and it's confusing af.

EDIT: Use the following info at your own risk. I'm not responsible if you spend money and energy on the following and you come up short because I'm not familiar with your specific make/model. I'm not the definitive resource, a lot of the following is what I've found while searching here and other forums. I'm going to create a thread showing my experience when I finish.

General consensus is: Yes, you can add controls. Here are the pitfalls:

• If you have no blanks for the controls on your current steering wheel, you'll need to either replace the airbag for one with a smaller cover, or get a smaller cover and rivet it to your existing airbag housing BUT there were multiple warnings about riveting. Used airbags seem to run in the $90-140 range at the big auction site.
• Tundra controls have LED backlighting in green, other models are orange/yellow colors, it sounds like Sienna may be green also. NOTE: You can swap the circuit boards between different models rather than solder new LEDs, it's pretty painless, here's the guts.
• Several models use the same steering wheel and control style throughout the years: Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Sequoia, Sienna, Highlander, possibly more, those are just the ones I confirmed use the same control housings, but the wiring may or may not be the same.
• There are at least two different types of connectors for the clockspring, what I was reading sounded like maybe sedans and minivans connector may be slightly different from the trucks and SUVs, otherwise the mounts and wiring and stuff are same.
• I had a hell of a time trying to find beige/fawn/tan controls to match that type of interior for our trucks.
• For dark grey interiors, the 4Runner/Taco parts with orange backlight with pricing from Cool Springs Toyota are:
  • 4runner LH controls: 84247-35010-B0 ($95.08)
  • 4runner RH: 84244-35030-B0 ($82.16)
  • 4Runner L-R bridge cable: 84204-58010 ($35.54)
  • Tacoma all three parts above, assembled: 84250-04010-B0 ($168.27)
• Cables from the controls to the clockspring are different depending whether you have cruise control or not
• I couldn't find any definitive information about whether wiring pre-exists. I saw more than one suggestion saying in 2004-2006 trucks, the wiring from clockspring to radio exists pre-installed. 2000-2003 may not have the wiring. I would love to hear people's experience in this area.

According to the 4Runner Diagram at ToyoDIY.com the 4Runner uses the following steering wheel switches:

84247A (84247-35010-B0) -- Switch, Steering Pad, LH
84244B (84244-35030-B0) -- Switch, Steering Pad, RH
84258A (84258-58010-B0) -- BLANK Cover, Steering Pad, RH

And according to the Tundra Digrams, it uses the following parts:

84247A (84247-58020-B0) -- Switch, Steering Pad, LH
84258A (84258-58010-B0) -- BLANK Cover, Steering Pad, RH​

And from other digging I found these, which you should expect are shaped same but may or may not be compatible (EDIT: Potentially not compatible, read EL's reply HERE but if you find out otherwise, LMK!):

Camry p/n controls: 84250-06020-BX (where X is 0, 1 or 2)
Camry p/n blank: 84258-08020-BX (where X is 0, 1 or 2)
Others: 84247-58010-XX (Highlander), 84247-58020-XX, 84250-08040-XX (Sienna)

You may be able to switch in E0, E1 or E2 for the BX or XX in part number to find fawn/tan/beige interior.​

@shifty` Damn, you know how to go in depth. Thank you! That seems like a ton of work but I'll look into it.

 

I try to pre-dig as much as possible so I can walk out and do the change myself without any interruptions. Preparedness saves headaches. I wanted to remove my airbag and wheel the fewest times possible.

One thing I've seen is constant, the LH/RH controls are tied to the cruise control harness. So if you have cruise control, there's a definite possibility your clockspring is already setup and ready to do. Whether it's wired on the backside of the clockspring is a big question mark.

1st Gen never came with right-hand controls. The big unknown for me, since I had factory steering controls and insisted I wouldn't buy a truck w/o them is whether trucks with no factory controls and no cruise have an empty connector at the clockspring?

Honestly, once you have the parts, it's not much to install. Remove (-) battery cable. Wait 15 mins. Remove airbag assembly. Plug in the wires for the controls, mount them to the wheel provisions. Reinstall airbag with smaller airbag cover if you had no controls before, else install your original airbag, then button the rest up.

Axxess ASWC-1 for controls. Not clear to me if I need to reset after to make it re-detect buttons. Someone else on here (just looked: @empty_lord) mentioned swapping an entire wheel assembly in, things just worked for him.

 

Glad they’re holding up. Those still tempt me. My STT Pros have been awesome. Holding up well. Should get 40k out of them. But was thinking it may be fun to try those next to compare to the STT pros. Lots of my miles have been muddy Ozark clay so the STT pros have killed it.... I guess we will see.
