2019 2020 transmission cooler missing

I doubt it will hurt resale. I’m pretty sure there wasn’t any hit to resale value on the pre 19s that don’t have tow package and cooler.

I’ll be devils advocate and say if you went so far as to call Toyota to ask someone who it sounds like they didn’t know, why didn’t you physically look for it on the truck before you bought it?

Toyota technically didn’t lie. It does have what they call a cooler. They never said external cooler or auxiliary cooler.

It sucks this happened, but it won’t be the last time you or I might fall for deceptive or misleading wording/marketing.

 

Great post for sure. Definitely hit all the main points, yes, they either need to extend the transmission warranty on the 2019 and 2020. Allow us to add an external transmission cooler without harming the warranty. Or supplying a Toyota approved external transmission cooler for these trucks as we (19 and 20 owners) aren't even even abusing or overworking these trucks when driving or even towing under the weight limitations

 

Like I stated before, there isn’t a way to physically tell if it has the cooler by looking in front of the radiator. The condenser looks very similar to previous years. Yeah, I guess we could have crawled under the truck to see if the lines coming off the transmission to the condenser were there, but why would any of us that were duped think to do that? Especially when folks like myself had previous year models that we knew had it and the window sticker still claimed the existence of a cooler. You’re Monday morning quarter backing.

 

They dropped the word "auxiliary" from the cooler description. This will give them the legal grounds to state that it is not the same as previous model years. Your assumption of lost resale value is unproven. There is no evidence to support this line of thinking, and a manufacturer is not responsible for the whims of the market and resale value. You made a purchase, not an investment, so depreciation is expected. Attempting to tie an as yet unseen increase in depreciation to the removal of an external cooler is tenuous at best.

Do I wish my truck had an external cooler? Yes.
Am I bummed, and even a bit pissy that the change wasn't more clearly communicated? Yes.
Is Toyota going to "fix" it? No.
Can they deny my warranty claim if I install a cooler? Only if they can reasonably show that the cooler caused the failure.

Best advice:

• Quit saying it voids your warranty. That's not how it works.
• Quit viewing resale as something you are entitled to or that the manufacturer is responsible for.
• Quit thinking there's some way to legally "stick it" to Toyota on this issue. Their lawyers are better than yours.

 

I can see the hoses through the grill. If he did research, he would’ve known to look for those 2 hoses on the passenger side going in to the top of the condenser. All without crawling under the truck and getting dirty. You can even see them under the hood. No quarterbacking, just common sense if you were that worried about it.

 

Here is how to physically tell if you have the cooler. I had to use a flashlight since the truck is in the garage, but this will work on any tundra. You can even go to the mall and check if other tundras have a cooler without touching them. I added a pic from under the hood too. If research was done as some are saying they did, they would have known.

 

I get what you’re saying, but there was nothing to lead us to believe that there may have been a change thus nothing to make us take a step to verify this.

This change could’ve just as easily been made on the 2018... Did you check to see if the hoses were there on your truck before you bought it?

 

Unfortunately, your comment is wrong in so many ways that I won't even attempt to respond point by point. Please re-read my post regarding my views on lawyers and warranty coverage. As far as resale value is concerned, how many people who had a choice between two otherwise equal trucks would pick the one without the external cooler - not many who are on this list. I think the conclusion my conclusion is reasonable.

Lastly, while I appreciate your feedback, it has always been my rule to avoid giving gratuitous advice to people. It has served me well.

 

Yes. I also checked the engine and looked under the truck to make sure I had the 38 gallon tank. I see your point on it being on the window sticker, but that guy said he went so far as to call Toyota and it sounded like the person he talked to wasn’t completely sure. That person probably doesn’t even drive a Toyota and doesn’t know everything about the tundra. At that point I’d be looking the entire truck over.

I went in to a suburu dealership looking for a car for my wife, and the salesman whose desk was 10 feet from the model car had no clue how to open the rear hatch.

Asked about towing capacity on a 4Runner at a Toyota dealership, and the guy was wrong but very insistent until I showed him the #s in a book he brought to me.

Salesman and 800 # people don’t know much and usually less than you when buying it.

I totally agree that salesmen don’t know their product very well most of the time and I am always telling them things they didn’t know about what they are trying to sell me. Therefore I never rely on salesmen for information when buying something. I guess shame on me for reading only and not physically verifying this particular aspect before making my purchase. I’m never too old or arrogant to learn something, and even though I consider myself a very informed and thorough consumer I won’t let this particular circumstance happen to me again. Lesson learned.

P.S. Does anyone want to trade a nice supercharged 2019 for their 2018? Lol

 

I feel the same. I wish I had looked more closely, but I checked the sticker and hadn't joined the forum to see that the external cooler had been removed. I don't know that I will tow enough for it to matter.

I have a question, if you've already supercharged yours, why wouldn't you just install a cooler? I'm genuinely curious, because the supercharger would present the same kind of warranty conundrum as an added cooler, wouldn't it? I've done no research on the SC, so be gentle. lol

I most likely will when I get around to it. I mostly daily drive mine 35 miles (round trip) to work every day on a two lane country road never getting over 65 mph. Thus my transmission temps rarely get over 220. I’d say it’s about one day per month on average that I will tow, and that is usually less than 3k lbs. On occasion I’ll pull my small tractor or enclosed trailer somewhere local which is maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I tend to believe that just doing a drain and fill every 30k miles will be more than enough to ensure my transmission will last. If I were some of these guys towing a heavy TT on the regular, I would most definitely add the cooler before I made another journey.

I have the reader. I’ll try it on mine. thanks! I just checked my 2020 SR5 - no extra trans cooler. The is an oil cooler and power steering cooler.

 

End of the day, if I fully understood the cooler was deleted, it wouldn't have changed my purchase decision. Now, if I had done a better job educating myself about other issues and options...

 

Wow, this thread just won’t die. I’m not complaining mind you, I’ve learned a lot. I’m looking forward to @MSU Tundra letting us know the results of the analysis on his old oil after he changes it. I still just can’t get all worked up about it though. Life’s too short.

im here looking for answers. i have questions, and seeking answers. I am awaiting Toyota to answer them, No response. Ill schedule an appointment and get it notated on a repair order. weather its no result in a recall, but i WILL have something in writing okaying the addition of a transmission fluid cooler with some Toyota parts without voiding my extended warranty

no more questions and not accusing you of anything. i very well know the "issue" what i'm saying is even if they don't fix or address it. you have on record you took it in for the issue. its about a paper trail. to come pn here and complain while truck is under warranty and not bring it in is stupid.

You are correct.

Look guy, you take your truck to the dealer when you find it necessary, and I will do the same. No need to judge. I came here and gave information on how I’m dealing with this issue. I’m a big boy and can handle my own affairs. Been doing it a long time with decent success without your 2c.
