How to tell-JBL

2000 Tundra SR5 Access Cab(?).

I'm needing to put, at a minimum, a new head unit in.

The current speakers in the doors, sound decent. But the head unit seems not to have any control at all. No volume (stuck at quiet level) no station change, no nothing but Bluetooth connection using an adaptor.

The door speakers are 6.5" down low, and what looks to be about a 1" tweeter up high.

The deck is aftermarket Sony. And there are no JBL markings anywhere to be seen.

I did the vin look up, and zero mention of JBL equipment.

What I really need to know, since I'm on a budget of +/- $200, is do I need to replace the speakers as well as the head unit?

From the description of what I have, does this sound like the infamous 2ohm JBL speakers?

I have been reading diligently, trying to narrow this down. It's like wading through pea soup, there is so much info.

I just need to narrow down what my actual needs will be, THEN go about searching for installation instructions.

Any/all help, and recommendations are most welcome.....also, sorry if this specific issue is covered elsewhere, I swear I did several searches using various search terms.

Not sure they had JBL in 2000, but having a separate tweeter it might be JBL.

Is the size of your Sony a single or double DIN?

Even though you have 20 year old speakers, I'd try replacing the HU and see how it sounds.

Currently it's a small Sony single din.

I'm fine with the single din from a cost perspective. I plan to bypass any amp Toyota deemed needed in the dash, or elsewhere.

Double din would be nice, but not needed. Just needs Bluetooth connectivity and enough power to drive the speakers adequately.

I'd find a nice pioneer or kenwood single din and swap it out.
I buy a lot of stuff from Crutchfield because of their return policy.
I had a Pioneer in my 2005, the one pictured above.

If I was doing a complete overhaul, I would buy one of James' packages.

You know eventfully you will probably replace the speakers and get an amp.
So whatever HU you buy, keep in mind the possible upgrades in the future.
I had 3 amps under the front seat of my 2005 with a custom sub box..
Had the XM tuner tucked behind the climate control panel.

The amp on the early 1st gens is right behind the stereo, you can check it and see if it says JBL. Also, the best way to check is to pull one of the speakers and look on the back. It will say JBL and the ohms if it is. If not JBL, super easy to replace and bypass the amp if you have one.

I have 4 JBL speakers sitting here out of my 06 Tundra DBL cab. There is a sticker on the back of each speaker with JBL and the part #. None of the stickers have the ohms listed.

You may want to pull out the Sony and see what previous owner did first. You never know if they cut off the harness or what all they did behind the radio. You’ll also be able to tell if JBL has been bypassed based on the harness that was used (if any)

One point in case a non-2000/2001/2002/2003? owner comes in - At least in the Access cab, at least in later years, amp is under the carpet in the cavity under rear passenger seat.

 

Update,
I plan to go to best buy or quality auto sound today, and see what there is to see regarding a new head unit.
I think I will hold off buying new speakers, until is see what the new head unit sounds like in the truck using existing speakers.
Fingers crossed these are 4ohm speakers, and that the previous owner did NOT butcher the harness.
