Damn just caught the catch latch in time!

I noticed a popping sound when I opened my drivers door. I thought maybe dry/dust needs grease. Upon further inspection the catch latch was broken at the swivel pin on the body side mount. I have a steep driveway and had issues in the past with kids and doors flying open. Parking uphill crushed a kids leg. So parking downhill is safer but comes with consequences. Even though I’ve been ginger on my door, the weight alone was enough to destroy the door mount side backing.


On my 04, my hinge literally ripped out of the door.

Anyway, 132.00 later for that dang part I replaced the 17’s catch. Be aware if the door doesn’t sound right, is creaking or popping at all. It’s absolutely quiet now.

No just drivers side. Others ones look ok so far and get 90% less use. I’m sure at some point I’ll have to.
I’ll have to dig the part number out of the trash. I’ll update later today when back home.

Was is easy to change?

 

Super simple. Had to take off door panel but A1 auto has a great video on how to do it. 3 bolts, 10mm, screwdriver and plastic pry tool. Total job was about 10 minutes.

I thought the same thing but then realized without some give it would probably just fatigue the metal and rip.

 

Be sure to use a spray lube on the pin occasionally. The pin wears and you will also get the popping noise. Add some to the hinges while your there.

 

Mine was popping a while ago also. I noticed it was cracked just like yours. Since my front passenger door lock was also out, I took it to Carmax and both were covered under warranty.

 

It’s called a “door check”. I replaced mine in my drivers door as I had let it swing open too many times and it was popping. So annoying.
