I’m doing the same thing. I really like my Tundra and it did a great job towing my 22’ TT, but when we decided to upgrade to a 5th wheel I quickly realized this truck doesn’t have the payload/tow capacity. Totally my fault I should have done more research before buying it.

Not an engineer, but I believe it's suspension and the unboxed frame, with the factory rear leafs being the weakest point (just like every Toyota truck I've owned).

Yes, we still have a 2013 Tahoe with 5.3l. Not happy with build quality and just waiting for engine to drop one of the AFM lifters. I use the obd device that keeps it in v8 all the time, but dash is cracked, door pull disintegrated, 3 steering racks already, numerous oil leaks and we babied this suv for 75k miles.

After seeing how they flexed with 2000 lbs in the bed (I went slow, tested brakes, and it was perfectly dry) I was quite shocked. I'd love to upgrade them, I don't care if it would stiffen up the ride, but since they're 2.25" leafs and not 3" leafs the options are limited. There is an option to change to 3" but it is quite pricey, and then it brings into question what other parts aren't made for increased weight. The 5 lug hubs certainly make me nervous and then the frame.

It's the same idea as towing though - if you're getting close to the limit quite a bit go bigger. Sure a Tundra can tow 7k lbs, but if you're doing it day in day out I'd highly recommend a 3/4 ton. Same with heavy payloads - doing more than 1/2 ton regularly then it's either get a stripped out RC or go 3/4 ton. And weight distribution is huge - put 500 in cab and 500 up to the front of the bed is much better than 1000 on the hitch.

One thing I've noticed is payload numbers seem to take into account that the heavier stuff will be put at the rear/hitch. If you add up axle ratings of front and rear they go over the total GVWR.

We are all here complaining about how much payload and towing, when man use to do all that by back, mules, and elephants :)

Watch this video from back in 2014 .. not much has changed so it's still relevant . It made me feel better about my tundras capabilities compared to F150 .

Although there were facts shared and I love my Tundra, that was a pretty biased video. Also when you compare a 2020 to a 2020, Ford has crushed any of the 2015 advantages (at least on paper).

The 2022 Tundra better be awesome.

If the 2022 Tundra could post a 1600lb payload with same towing capabilities, more or less, in a crewmax 4x4 config and nicer trim level, I may bite after the first year or two out as I could confidently fit 4 passengers and a fair tongue weight with those specs, otherwise 3/4 or 1 ton is knocking on my door.

Comparing 2020 f150 XLT supercrew 4x4 to 2020 SR5 tundra crew max .... What had really changed ? Same engine options . Maybe a little more engine power output but other than that pretty much same trucks as in 2015... I don't know what you mean that the f150 blows the tundra away on paper ?

The 2022 Tundra better be awesome.

Here another good video which gives great information to anyone who doesn't quite still understand difference between payload and towing capacity

Since the rumored figures are much higher for towing, have to figure the payload numbers are going to increase significantly as well. If the Tundra gets the weight down close to 5000 lbs there's still room for up to 3500 lbs of payload and still be classified as a half ton - class 2a with GVWR of 6000-8500 lbs. Doubt they use it all but that's the room Toyota has to improve the Tundra since they're around only 7200 lbs GVWR now.

Every time I look at 3/4 tons I see the poor build quality and reliability , Makes me appreciate my tundra more honestly . damn it why cant Toyota get into the HD market !

They should aim to at least have some trims with over 2000 lbs of payload, given that certain F150s and GM 1500s do.

I doubt they'd go much higher on GVWR. As far as I know, the other half-tons on the market are all between 7000 and 7500 right now.

At the moment Ive come to the conclusion that I'll run my setup the way it is , even thought it maybe a little over payload , Personally I cannot give up reliability for payload capacity , That was the entire reason for purchasing my tundra . I know my tundra will get me from A to B safely every time for years and years to come with little money spent . I cannot say that about the domestic HD market as of yet .
