What am I going to need for new headunit installation?

Got my new to me Kenwood DNX772BH. The USB wire needs to be spliced with a new end, but as far as adapters and wiring diagrams I'm down to buy whatever harnesses I need but I dont want to get to putting in the new unit and realize that I need something else. I havent pulled out the stock non JBL/NAV head unit yet to see what it looks like on mine yet, but from the pictures it looks pretty straight forward. I know what basically everything goes to that's in the picture except the purple and white wire on the right side under the USB cable. I want to retain my steering wheel controls too, but I think ill need a maestro for one of those. Ive seen a few on their website that look like they work but im not sure what to get.

Whatever you folks can offer to make it easier as far as whether the GPS and backup cameras will hook right up, im all ears. There is so much information on here but its spread out over many threads, I cant keep track.

 

Do you have reverse camera? Will you want to retain it?
For ease of installation i would go with the idatalink Maestro.

Check that link for which harness and module you will need. This way you can retain the swc, and factory backup camera. I would get the RR module That should be enough for what you need.
Then get the TO2 or RTO2 harness.

Flash the module according to your vehicle and headunit.
Install it.

Is your truck non jbl with an amp?

 

I do have the camera in the tailgate I would love to keep. It is indeed the non JBL with the amp under the passenger seat. I went to the website and its pretty sweet and looks easy. I tried setting up an account but I think the servers were down. Can you only get these at a dealer or can I buy one online and have it flashed and sent to me?

 

If you decide to go with the Maestro RR, or the Maestro RR2, you will need the following items IN ADDITION to said Maestro RR or RR2:
1. TO2 harness (makes the whole damned thing plug and play)
2. iDatalink USB adapter (so that you can utilize your already installed dash USB port)
3. iDatalink sat/GPS adapters (if you plan to use said SiriusXM service; but don't waist time with the GPS adapter as the Kenwood GPS antenna is far superior!). I did NOT use these adapters as I do NOT use SiriusXM and as I stated, the Kenwood GPS antenna is superior to the Toyota GPS antenna.
4. and finally, a power antenna adapter for local radio stations (as Maestro, for some reason does not make one for our truck) Amazon link for Metra adapter:

That is ALL THAT YOU WILL NEED as far as installing the head unit and Maestro RR into your Tundra (this is not including whatever wiring you will require for any amps/speakers, etc). The TO2 harness already has the b/u camera adapter attached so you're good there! As long as you are proficient at soldering wire connections, you should have no problems.

The cool think about the Maestro, besides the IDBII-info interactive apps on the Kenwood H/U, is that Dean, at 5Star Car Stereo has a video on Youtube on EXACTLY how to install your Tundra Maestro TO2 harness to your Kenwood H/U. I just did my install about two months ago and it was easy! If you have any other questions, let me know.

 

You dont have to get it from a dealer. You can buy it anywhere online. You can flash them yourself, it's pretty simple. There is some YouTube video on how to. After you set up an account, you can flash the module.

@preacher35 what is the difference from the USB wire that im going to have from my Head Unit? The line is busted on my head unit but I can easliy wire a new end onto it. Is there another line that comes with the RR? I dont have satelite radio and im going to order a kenwood GPS antenna online. So im just going to need to order the Metra adapter you posted, and a Kenwood GPS antenna. Unless the USB is different, I think thats all I need besides the RR and T02.

 

The only difference is, IF you want to utilize the already installed Tundra USB port located just south of your H/U, you will need an adapter as the wire harness on said USB port is Toyota proprietary, and thus, will not be able to connect to your Kenwood H/U in its native state.

@preacher35 I just watched that video on the install. I plan on keeping my speakers so I just have to crimp the correct speakers to the right colors. And man, I'm so going to mess this up haha. That's a lot of wiring!

 

You're gonna need the Kenwood Bluetooth microphone.
Your stock Entune mic will not work for your phone..

Also an SiriusXM SXV300 tuner if you want XM.

 

Nah, you'll be fine. Just do as Dean says and ISOLATE the wires that you will be using from those that you will not. Once you are balls deep in it, you'll know what to do.
So you are not doing any amps or subs?

Oh, yes, @1lowlife is correct: if your H/U did not come with the bluetooth mic, you're going to have to get one. I assumed that your Kenwood H/U came with it. I mean, it's suppose to.

I do plan on putting in an amp and subwoofer! I'm actually building a box tomorrow morning with a buddy who wanted to help me.

I do have the mic for the radio already, and I don't plan on using the satellite radio at all.

I do want to order a Kenwood GPS antenna (which I assume, all Kenwood antennas are universal to Kenwood).

I zoomed in on the wire so you guys could see. Looks like the steering wheel controls, but I think that the plug may have been for a BMW from what the guy at the audio store told me.

 

That plug is not needed. Cut it off. The maestro would take care of the swc.

 

I still need the blue wire I take it? I also looked up a diagram and it looks as though the purple and white wire are accessory wires.

NO, you DO NOT need the blue "Steering Wheel Remote Input" wire. The black Maestro "data cable" (which connects from the Maestro RR, DIRECTLY to the Kenwood data port) will perform that function. If you watched Dean's 5Star Car Audio video that I posted, he tells you to forget the Steering wheel input cable as the Maestro data cable will do that job. Understand that the data flow, to and from the steering wheel, goes through one of the 3 white, large wiring harnesses, then the Maestro, then the Kenwood H/U and back. So, the blue wire on the Kenwood H/U is not needed.

As for the USB adapter: NO, you do NOT need to splice anything. The Maestro adapter has a grey end that plugs into the Tundra's USB wire (the one that goes the USB port located just below the a/c controls) and the USB end of the adapter connects to your Kenwood USB port.

 

On the TO2 instructions, there is the Tundra w/ JBL Audio and Tundra w/o JBL Audio/No Amplifier. I have a CrewMax, non-JBL with the factory amplifier. I am assuming I need to cut the white and gray RCAs but was looking to see if that was correct prior to doing it. Anyone happen to know?

 

I need more information about what you are trying to do. Are you installing a new head unit? Are you installing aftermarket amps?

Looking at the directions, the TO2 shows the "JBL" and Non-JBL version. The JBL version retains the white and gray RCAs and the non-JBL cuts the white and gray RCAs to use for hard wiring. The thing that threw me off is the Non-JBL directions show "without amplifier." Just trying to measure twice before cutting.

EDIT: I am going to be running a USB3.0 extension/dash plug down next to the factory the connector. Going with the extra bandwidth now for future upgrades.

 

OK, here's the deal. It sounds like you are going to keep all of your remaining OEM stereo equipment aside from you H/U. If your non-JBL system has an amp, I'm pretty sure that you WILL need those RCA wires. The JBL system has an amp underneath the front passenger seat. I know that some of the Tundra NON-JBL system's ALSO HAVE AN AMP underneath the front passenger seat. In fact, I think it is the exact same amp! If you look under that seat, the amp will be an aluminum color with a short, wide bracket on one side and a long thin bracket on the other, and it is about the size of a small DVD player. Those RCA inputs on the TO2 harness are for you to utilize that amp with your new H/U.

In the 5StarCarAudio video that I linked to this thread, Dean was doing a complete system swap. Thus, he didn't require any of those speaker or RCA connections from the TO2 harness regardless of JBL or non-JBL. In fact, I'm not sure why he even mentioned JBL vs. non-JBL as it wouldn't even matter in that particular build.

If you do have said amp, YOU WILL NEED those RCA inputs! Regardless, DO NOT cut out any of the wires on the TO2 harness. There is no need to do that. Simply tape or zip tie off the wires you will not use on this installation in case you want to add amps or other accessories in the future (ie. aux video devices; front dash cam, etc.).

 

I appreciate the quick response. I don't want to cut any of the wires, either. Their directions just show to to cut the RCA leads for hard wiring if you do not use them.

 

Yeah I just double checked again. Factory amplifier sitting under the passenger seat. Thanks again for the quick responses.

 

I have a DDX 6904s Kenwood head unit. A while back I checked for firmware updates, and saw that there was one, so I flashed mine. I looked for one for your unit, and see there s one for it too. Your "new to me" comment suggests that it s not new which is in fact the case. Your head unit is a 2015 model as stated here. More reason to flash the firmware.
