I have to take the truck in next week (Toyota dealer) due to a recall for the passenger's air bag. I've been trying to understand the law concerning a bad tire sensor and if the dealer is going to make me replace it. The best I understand is they are not responsible, the owner is? as far as replacing a bad sensor. Any help on this issue would be very much appreciated.

PS, I've not been able to 'short out' the TPMS yet. I'm disabled and have a hard time getting to things.

    Thanks in advance.

Your location would be helpful (state law variations?) But generally speaking: No, they should not make you fix the TPMS, only inform you about it. I have not heard of any state mandating a fix.

EDIT: in fact, there is very specific guidance on this issue from the NHTSA. In your scenario (the sensor is already malfunctioning and your TPMS light is illuminated on the dash), then the dealer is under no obligation to fix it without your permission. See EXHAUSTIVE description below at this link:

Take them out and/or disconnect the wiring sensor. No need for nannies if you are an aware person.

Thanks to all for your comments. Much appreciated.

    I'm in Oregon.

Some day when I have a good day (I'm disabled) I'll get that thing disabled. Right now not doing so good.

    Peace! Be safe
