What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yeah, we have a compressor at the house and at the shop. I paint stuff all f'in day, so I figure taking some time to beautify the truck ain't no thing. Just got to get the goods to make it happen. I plan on painting the whole damn thing. Our company colors are black and gold, so probs gonna go with black. I'm hoping to pick up a new tailgate for it this weekend. Once the body is up to snuff, paint is next.

 

My 2002 is my dedicated work truck and I had to do something about it's appearance, because I didn't want to new clients shying away because of how my truck looked. The hood & roof were sprayed with Line-X earlier this year... it looks great, but I still need to finish it up with a painted stripe or something.

I'm getting old and the less I have to worry about washing & waxing the top side of my work truck the better, and washing & waxing the sides are much easier for me these days.

 

For a sec when I saw John Anderson I thought your hometown might've been in central FL. I was about to start ribbing you! Note: I spent half my life living all over the glorified limp-dick appendage of the US and know most of the nooks and crannies inside-out. No offense intended to Hoopty or others living there, but I could tell you some stories.

There's two yards near me that I've bought parts from, I befriended a couple of the staff and tell them any time I'm hunting for a parts car or overhaul. If you're nice and you offer a small cash finder's fee of $100, a lot of guys on yards will keep their eyes peeled for you.

Two comments: One, remember, curiosity killed the cat, proceed at your own risk. If something breaks, plausible deniability has been legitimized up to the highest ranks and is even encouraged in recent years. Two, I definitely trust someone with a beat-up but good quality truck more than someone with a big shiny 2-year old lifted and jacked unreliable beast. One of those two usually screams hunger to work, the other screams hunger for money. Leave the appearances to politicians and movie stars. FYI I'm not the only consumer who thinks and feels this way.

 

Frame for my pull-out bed and bench seat in the camper got mostly built today! The plan is for interlocking slats to pull out to become a bed when it's not a bench seat, and also hinge upwards to access storage underneath.

I used the straightest 2x2's I could find, joining them via pocket hole joinery and premium wood glue. I'm so happy with how it's turning out, this is actually the first time I got everything dialed in correctly for the pocket holes without messing it up... They make for impressively quick and strong joints.

Wood is a hell of a lot cheaper than the 80/20 aluminum extrusions I used for the galley unit, I had to halt my fixation on those or else this wouldn't have been completed due to costs.

I'm trying to figure out a way to achieve slide-out and hinge-up functionality without sacrificing strength. Imagining a "picture frame" shape on top of what I have, where 1 of the 4 sides slides out into the middle of the camper while the opposite side is hinged. I'm worried wood woodn't work since that might focus stress on two corners.

Ironically, I found a guy parting out an 07 Sequoia this morning. He's got the spindles, CV axles, front diff, front driveshaft, the 4wd control ECU, and the trans with a locking transfer case even. All I would need is the driveshaft, wiring, and the climate control bezel. I wonder how I could incorporate an additional switch to actually lock the transfer case when I wanted

Did Toyota make any Tundras with the locking t-case option?

 

No they did not. A whole donor truck is the easiest option. Then you’ll have to modify harnesses to make the integration relay based access cab work with a body ecu setup. (Floor harness modifications mostly)

They are indeed fj trail team wheels.
On loan from my Tacoma. Once the Tacoma is rolling I’ll be putting trd pro 4runner wheels on the tundra

 

I suppose I could just run without the locker if I went that route. It should be just fine. I'd love to find a donor truck. May I ask where you happened to snag your rollover and it's donor?

 

I located the parts all from different trucks. The rollover was from a customer that use to bring the truck in. He had liability and offered to sell it to me for the price of the tow

Been cleaning up all the grounds this past week. Today was A/C Compressor ground cleaning. Light grit sanding after removal with a wipe down then a slight layer of Electric Grease. This ground had mucho dirt under/between the plating and engine block due to been up front. The grounding wire is small so I guess the main firewall ground is doing most of the work and this one is an ancillary.

I’ve been at this bracket before to fix goofy mechanics improper routing of the little ground wire supposing when he did the Timing Belt? The wire was routed dangerously close to the Accessory Belt. I did well not to lose the screw back then but lost it today. Went to big box and grabbed another one ($1 pack of two).

Also, cancelled the order for the wire harness tape and just Super33 taped up the Fabbed Redundant Grounds made the other day. No pics of this, but looks good.

I didn't get a chance to accidentally try out the 4WD on the 2006 Green Meanie today; however, I was informed that the horn honks when cruise control is engaged. And I have a phantom electrical gremlin that drains the battery. Also, I found out my tailgate latch is no worky. I am damn near 40, but I feel like I'm stuck with my high school beater car again.

Apologies if this doesn't fit this thread, but I'm a touch frustrated. And it needs tires. And an alignment. I'm showing steel on the front left tire.

Please tell me I can make this better.

 

With enough time and parts it can be made new.

Quite sadly, time and and parts are hard to come by right now. I traded my perfectly functional Buick for a 2017 Tundra. And then I was attacked by a deer. We run a custom Metal fabrication business, and the whole goal was to have 2 trucks. We currently have 1 and a half.
I'm just being whiny. I'm quite grateful that a Tundra has fallen into my lap. My goal is to get it into tip-top shape and drive it forever.
