Just curious how did you get your truck out of there?
Can you drive with a broken front axle ?
I cratered the front diff in my Jeep pickup but that was a solid axle with lock out hubs so was still able to drive

Since the wheel is still driving the broken shaft that will be trying to “helicopter” itself at that point, a tow is probably the best / easiest unless you’re way out in some remote area. Then you have to choose between replacing the axle assembly on the spot, or removing the shaft from the outer joint.

Since the stub of the outer joint and the axle nut hold the double-row wheel bearing together, you can’t (well, SHOULDN’T, someone would / will / has tried it, I’m sure), you need to leave the outer joint in place.

Woah, sorry about your Tundra. On another subject, Dodge is all chromed out. I don’t feel so bad. People still like chrome..

How high was the RPM involved here?

Looking at how buried the Dodge was, and what it ultimately took to get it unstuck, plus the upward angle (more weight), I could see how there would be more stress imparted to the joint. Throw in the torsionals and other really bad dynamics from wheel hop, I guess I can see a short life. Add in increase angles from lift kit as well.

@Mark18TRD I just about had the same experience...maybe even same river...is that the Brazos, or maybe Trinity? Blew apart my front diff on my 100 series hoping around in the river bottom sand trying to pull out a buddies 4runner..

If you have dealership problems Lone Star Gear and Axle is awesome, they did my ring and pinions after my incident. A couple of local shops outsource their drive-train work to him...great dude. Ive referred him to a few people now and all have had great things to say about their experience. https://lonestaraxle.com/

A shovel and traction pads would have gotten him out. As well as airing down the tires. Gotta go prepared!

If not going custom, NMD 944085 is the part number you'll need from Napa (driver side). It has a thermoplastic outer boot that is supposed to be more resistant to tear and i noticed has a bit wider diameter on the physical axle. You'll also need a 39mm 12 pt socket (removing outer axle nut at wheel) and a bit of 75w 85 (or 75w 90) diff fluid to top off afterwards. I just did this over the weekend, it took maybe 3 hrs, but was doing it outside on an incline and was about 100deg so had a few beer breaks. Hardest part was hammering the new axle into the diff, but overall pretty painless.

May want to go ahead and replace the opposite side as well in case there is hidden damage, or at least inspect thoroughly.

had two of our buddy's swing by to get me out, used my yank strap to get me out and off the incline.......then i 2 wheeled it out of the mud holes and drover her home slowly!! drove fine, luckily with the way it broke, the axle was pretty straight and braced on all sides by other suspension components.

hey Reneaux, this was the west fork of the san Jacinto.....right off of 99 and Riverwalk dr. they're building a new neighborhood down that road (all dirt/mud and a few hundred yards of pipeline row) to get there. thanks for the info on the gear/axle shop! may come in handy next time.

just picked her up from the dealer........right as rain with a fresh new axle courtesy of Toyota! I still had powertrain and they covered it.

Oh nice, we used to put our boat in right at that little bridge at 59 with that old man/gate-keeper guy down that dirt road, haha. I may have to go check that spot out! Glad it all worked out for you at Toyota.

We got pretty good at it to where we could swap a Tacoma CV in about 20 mins. The Tundra doesn't look much harder, other than the higher torque specs.

I’ve swapped my cv axles a few times on the tundra. It’s not too bad at all. I can have both sides swapped in under 2 hours. It should be noted, the entire spindle doesn’t have to come off the truck. Just remove the two bottom spindle-to-lower control arm bolts and zip tie the spindle out of the way to slide cv axle out.
    Score!!

    Evening!! new to the forum.
Has anyone come up with a fix to this problem?
Raised my truck with the RC 6” new struts new shocks in rear. I have broke the drivers side twice now. Why isn’t the passenger side breaking?
Could this be to much travel from front suspension?
My local 4x4 shop has done hundreds of these lifts for the dealer show room floor to and new owners. He stated the only difference is nobody ever got the upgraded struts as I did. He is thinking I may have to put travel limiting straps on the front end.
A friend was watching my truck when I broke this time and he stated as the rear end loaded and the front end lifted the cv snapped. The front wheels had not even started to spin yet.

Yup ... I would have left him there unless it was an absolute emergency. Kinda the natural habitat for a Ram ... stuck

Actually I was gonna say a combo of digging and ramps/recovery boards but you got to that solution. Recovery boards, even cheap ones, are worth it. Used mine so many times ... just not yet for my own truck.
