When do you start using high mileage oil?

I am new owner of a 2011 Tundra with 120000 miles. It has had synthetic from day one, changed about every 5000 miles. At what point do I consider using high mileage synthetic oil?

For me it would be the point I saw oil consumption or leakage not easily fixed. If you don’t use a lot of oil between changes and you don’t have any noticeable external oil leaks I would keep running what you are running.

 

You can use HM oil off the show room floor and be good to go. The “high mileage” stuff actually has a better additive pack than the regular stuff, in regards to all out wear protection.

Regular stuff, while still good compared to the 1970’s, has definitely been re-geared in the last 10 years or so with emission system protection in mind by trimming out zinc/phosphorus. (Your bearings, timing chain and valvetrain like zinc/phosphorus...but your cats dont).

Keep your oil clean, use good filters and probably never know the difference either way.

 

Whenever you want if it gives you peace of mind. HM formula's won't harm anything. Nor will it be a miracle overnight cure for major leaks.

 

On my 1997 T-100 I switched at 263,000 miles. It has the 3.4L V6.

 

If you look at the API ratings on the back of the oil bottle this is where you'll see the difference, its just the older oil with the old oil additives. Every time the EPA, the engine manufactures and the API come up with a new rating it has to cover all the previous ratings. I do agree with the lack of Zinc and it really upsets me but I use BG's MOA to help with lubrication. IMO high mileage oil is over priced snake oil. Keep up with your services and use the correct oil weight recommended by the manufacturer.

 

I start mixing it in right away (1 quart full synthetic) and go 'full throttle' at 50K on each vehicle I own. What could go wrong?

 

As stated the extra additives in the HMO is a plus for seals. Even expensive oil is cheap insurance against major repairs, mine get good oil and filter every 5k miles. Even conventional oil works, but why not use improved lubrication?

 

I changed the oil in my 2016 Corolla (daughter drives it). The oil was at ~12,000 miles (Mobil 1, 0W20). Before I opened the Fumoto valve I checked the dipstick and the oil on the dipstick was still just a little bit "clear" (i.e. gold).

Im the 2nd owner of my tundra i got it at 81k on the clock iv been using Castrol full synthetic 0 20 high milage (65,000 or 75,000 cant remember on the judge atm) with Wix full synthetic filter. The sooner the better. As engine parts wear they lose protective coatings and the highmilage oil has additives to replace those coatings in a form of liquid a barrier.

I’ve always thought the ‘high mileage’ moniker was more a marketing gimmick. Maybe there are slight differences, enough to matter, another question. To me, the designation on the bottle, ‘SL’ or whatever is the latest, is what matters.

 

I have a 2012 Tundra Crewmax. I am at 95k miles on it. I use full synthetic Mobil1 PLUS a quart of Marvel Mystery oil in the engine. I also add 8 oz. Of Marvel to the gas tank everytime I fill up. By doing this I hope to have rg fe truck last me to 300k-400k in engine life. We shall see.

 

I am at 417K on my Tundra. Does that qualify as high mileage on a Toyota ? Anyway I have always used plain 5w-30 with no issues and still running well and I am approaching my 100th oil change....

 

You can easily make MM Oil. It's basically 74% mineral oil and 24% Stoddard's solvent and 1% lard according to a NTSB analysis.

 

I’ve been in the construction and farming business all my life and never heard off anyone use High Milage oil.

 

It's just another marketing angle, not that there's anything wrong with that.
