Ok. I painted the steering wheel trim. Thinking the next item I want to tackle is the cup holder trim and all the trim around the shifter. Has anyone painted the chrome trim? If so did you scuff it and primer it? I have considered the AJT equipment but don’t know if I will like the fake screws they have.
    Thanks in advance!

SEM trim black is what I use. It says you can use on chrome. Vent rings and that cup holder gotta go.

    Looks good.

Some more details on how you did it, mask it, removed it etc would be great.

I used Krypton fusion on mine and it's held up really well. I just wiped the chrome down with alcohol beforehand and did about 6 coats.

I took of negative battery cable and removed the airbag. 4 screws hold those switches in and 6 screws hold that cover on each. I wiped them down with rubbing alcohol and gave them 5 coats each. The paint doesn’t say matte or satin. SEM Trim Black part number 39141. Got it from O’Reilly auto parts. About $20 a can. It is about $16 on Amazon. The whole project took about an hour.

That looks great. I am going to try to get that done this weekend. How did you handle getting the chrome piece in the shifter painted? Did you remove it all together?

Has anyone dulled the shine on the clear plastic that covers the P R N D ? Sometimes the sun hits that and blinds me worse than the chrome does.

Got the cup holder trim, chrome shift gate and shift trim removed. Man drilling out those plastic welds was scary. I thought for sure I was going to poke through the surround. Anyway they are now painted and drying for reinstall. Pics to follow.

I watched the video on AJT for removal of the shifter surround. It took the longest. The shift gate has about 6 plastic rods that were melted to hold it in place. I used my Dremel tool and wore the rounded piece off. It was very easy. The cup holder chrome you gotta take the whole console piece out. The AJT video explains how to do it.

Next on the agenda the hideous radio surround! And those chrome rings on the AC vents.

    Crap. Then the doors.

Me too. I thought about buying the AJT stuff but wasn’t sure how I would like the covers with the screws in them. Plus I had a cart loaded up with about $275 worth of cover pieces. Almost pulled the trigger. Then I saw where another guy had painted some of the parts and I figured I would try that route. Very please so far.

Wow, that looks great. I need to de-chrome the inside as well. The other day I was driving around with my son and he kept on getting blinded by all of the chrome. These trucks should almost come standard with sunglasses!

That's my dilemma to with the AJT equipment is those awful fake screws. If they took those off, I'd buy for sure.

That was simple. Remove the negative battery cable. Remove access panels on either side of steering wheel (one is around the cruise arm). This exposes 2 #30 torx screws to remove the air bag. Once the air bag is out of the way you can see the 2 screws holding each switch. Remove these and flip it over and remove the 3 screws holding the cover on.

Yeah, I wonder if AJT reads this. I'd get the shifter and cup surround from them, but the screws just look out of place. It does look to be a better style for the Tacoma.

That looks great! How did you paint the small gate right around the shifter? Does that remove or did you mask?

For anyone considering the AJT Designs cup holder trim, and don't like the look of the "fake" screws... they aren't fake. They are need to secure the trim and are functional. You can probably find them in different colors if you want to add accent colors to your interior.
